(Plus we aren't sure it'll be a 4G phone)

AT&T is sending e-mails advertising their HSPA+ 4G network. I think it can be safely assumed the iPhone will get that upgrade this year. Why would AT&T advertise a network technology that isn't going to be in the iPhone this year? Are they going to be advertising 4G Android phones instead?

They will call it..

"Oh lookie! You can control it with your finger!"

That seems to be the main thought users have in their mind. At least early on.

Will iphone users respond to a bell also? Can you immobilize them by shining a light in their eyes? :)

Interesting idea, but where could they potentially move it?

I was thinking of moving it to the back of the phone, or making the home button smaller.
The previous iOS 4.3 SDK suggests that the future iPhones and iPads won't have home buttons. This might be used to reduce the bezel in the iPad, and maybe increase the screen size a bit on the iPhone.

I'd really like to see a 3.7" or 4" screen max.

Hmm....

There's no way there just going to leave it as "iPhone", they never have... if they just called it iPhone it would make is sound like the iPhone 4 is newer than the iPhone... I think iPhone 4G is probably the best bet... AT&T is rolling out here 4G really soon, and well, the big red is to stupid to have theirs even close to coming to the public fully.

Sooner or later they are just going to have to call it "iPhone"

The current phone isn't called the iPhone 4G, so why would they call the new one the iPhone 4GS?

Cause the new phone will be 4G capable PLUS a huge speed increase.

Seeing as the Verizon qualcomm chip supports HSPA+ 14.4mbps, its a reeeallly safe bet that the next iPhone will support HSPA+, or what is now being branded as 4G. Thus, 4G.

If they continue doing one per year, they could go by year. iPhone 2011, iPhone 2012, etc.

Kind of an old thread, but there you are...
This is my fear. I'm definitely not buying the ip4 for many reasons, but probably the number one reason is that it's so aesthetically ugly and chunky. Unfortunately the ip5 will probably be a refresh of the ip4 so it seems we are stuck with this design until maybe the ip6.

If the iPhone 4 is chunky I'd hate to know how you feel about the size of previous models...

It's chunky looking and feeling. I know it's thinner by measurement, but it just feels chunky and not sleek like the 3gs. That's to me at least, I know most of you love it, but it just doesn't feel good for me.
I've played with the iP4 a lot and I agree, it feels terrible in the hand compared to the 3GS. It does look more modern and... hard edged... and of course it's a hit, but I'll be glad when they soften it up a bit. ...and make it out of something that doesn't shatter when you drop it.

I speculate there are going to be sad iPhone 4 users who won't be able to upgrade.

What happened to this topic? After the merge i feel very lost in it.

Yes it does, G stands for generation

THey can just call it for the iphone 5

It's truly amazing how many people believe the little thoughts in their brains when they have only their own delusions to back them up.

Who needs facts when you have delusion huh?

The people saying 4G, 4GS, 4S done have much common sense. 4G is barely making a presence yet. Chances are the iP4 wont even be 4G capable. So calling it 4G makes no sense. Calling it a 4GS makes even less sense then.

I guess 4S is possible but unlikely because they finally got back on track with the iPhone 4:

iPhone 1 - iPhone 2G
iPhone 2 - iPhone 3G
iPhone 3 - iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4 - iPhone 4

It would make the most sense to call it the iPhone 5

Not officially, you just want it to stand for 'generation'. iPhone 3G wasn't the third generation iPhone, don't get me started on 'third generation S' >_>

Word.
