[Merged] iPhone 5 / 2011 iPhone speculation thread

How do you know its going to be the iPhone 5? What if it's more like the iPhone 3GS update? I say this not to play semantics, but no one knows what the the next update will entail. It could be a big update that is awesome or it could be a very small update that upsets you because you didn't pick up a 4 the year before and you wasted a year of waiting.

If you want/need the features of the 4 and you have the money, then get it. Otherwise don't get it.

I'm getting the 4 and if the next phone has features I want/need and I can afford it, I'm going to get that one too.

Trying to justify not buying something because you are waiting for next year is a foolish argument. There will be an upgrade next year, and the year after that, and the year after that. As long as the iPhone sells, Apple will release updates. Buy it when you want it (assuming there isn't a financial reason not too) and enjoy it for the extra year instead of waiting.

I'm getting 4 and will either get 6 or 7. I don't think 5 will improve too much just minor performance increases. I like to wait till there is something substantially new and then upgrade.

I went original -> sell -> 3G but was not eligible or that interested in the 3GS. For that reason the iPhone 4 is perfect for me because my 3G is two years old, getting slow and battery isn't that great anymore. I want the better camera, HD video, multitasking etc. I also see that I will skip next summer's iPhone and for summer 2012 we will hopefully be hitting the time when the carriers are all going 4G/LTE and rolling out nationwide. This should end the AT&T exclusivity and allow Apple to make 1 phone for multiple US carriers on one standard.

I'm guessing the next iPhone will be an evolution of the iPhone 4's design, not a complete redesign.

That's kind of the direction I'm thinking next year's phone will go - an evolution of the iPhone 4 - faster processor/more RAM, etc. with 4G network capability onboard.

The market for used iPhones has stayed quite robust, and I keep my electronics in pristine condition.

I've had every generation of iPhone, and have always been able to sell the previous model for a healthy price. I've never paid more than $100 out of pocket to upgrade to the next iPhone.

At that low cost, it's really a no brainer.

I'm waiting for iPhone V.

I'm not upgrade eligible until 3/11/2011 (since I got my 3Gs on 6/30/09) and I don't want to pay $600 off contract.
Granted I could sell my 3Gs for say $300 but that still leaves $300 (for a 16GB).

How do you guys manage to get a new phone every year at the $199/$299 price?

Nope, we are still using our original iPhone's. My wife and I need something that is faster and better. We almost upgraded with the 3gs but we held out for a new design.:)

I'll be getting my phone Thursday (preorder), but I checked my status last night using *639# and my new upgrade date is 6/22/11, so I'll be getting an i5!

Nope, iPhone 4 is my first.

I WILL say this - regardless of what happens in the future I will NOT order on launch day. I'll wait a month or two and roll into the store and walk right out w/ my new toy. This process was for the birds.

Well, I don't know you, so I can't speak for you, but as for myself, I've said the same type of thing since waiting in line for the 3G for several hours. I didn't do that for the 3GS, but I was waiting breathlessly at the keyboard to order it. This year, I was gonna wait until next year, because I'm thinking next year's will be more of an upgrade than people think right now. Naw. Pre-ordered the other day. Now I'm already trying to decide where I want to go wait in line on Thursday morning, or maybe Wednesday night, to grab one and cancel the pre-order. The iPhone kinda gets under your skin. ;)

This is exactly what I'm trying to say and ask. I just can't imagine people are willing to pay three bills or more for gently used hardware with minor imperfections over a new device with all new tech that's never been used for similar price or cheaper. I must be missing something, no?

Getting i4 Thursday so I will skip i5 and just wait for i6, then the world will end during the year of the i6 on 12-21-2012, so I will not worry about further upgrades

:rolleyes::eek::cool::D:apple:

iPhone 5 will have a couple features that will need polishing, so you might as well wait it out for iPhone 6, at which point you might as well wait for iPhone 7, at the very least.

very well said. i mean if your gonna reserve for the next one, might as well wait for the one after that, and so on..will there ever be a final?

got my 3GS at launch and like OS4 so far. Give it about 3.5 or 4 out of 5 stars. don't see a need for an iphone 4. my wife has a 3G and she doesn't seem to want a new one either. Might hold out till next year to see what's up with Android and move to Verizon. AT&T doesn't seem to get any good Android phones.

Facetime is useless the way it is
don't care about the retina display or the new cameras
gyroscope, who cares

last year i was hyped about getting my first iphone, but for the last year it has had about the same functionality as my wife's 3G. most software still supports all the devices. same with iphone 4, i won't get much more functionality out of it until there is software for it. which will be at least a year or two

I'm not saying if there is a attractive early upgrade offer I won't jump on it, but I certainly won't be a day 1 purchase.

Only reason I did it this go around was because, well, I had NO phone at all !

No.

I need a new phone ASAP. And if I can sell it at a price next year, that pretty much covers the upgrade fees. I would be a bit miffed if the iPhone 5 goes back to the older design and with the plastic, curved back and scratchable chrome bezel. Apple can always get cheap next year. And if we get 4G/LTE, be wary of the battery life taking a hit. As long as you can sell an iPhone off the net, most people just use the profits to upgrade every year.

next summer

im sure it will be a dissapointment, theyll announce iphone 4
featuring a 1.2 ghz processor a 5.3 mp camera and a "NEW AND IMPROVED" led flash

and jony ive will open the commercial with

"This product is unlike anything I have ever seen, When you hold it it feels amazing and this will revolutionize the world."

With all due respect, I understand many MR followers will be enjoying new iPhone 4's come tomorrow and of course Thursday. Albeit, I'm so tempted to jump when the white version becomes available, but I'm having second thoughts about waiting until next summer.

The major reason I would be tempted now to get iPhone 4 is the new FaceTime feature. I still think it needs some polish (i.e. video call capability b/w multiple carriers - not just iP4 to iP4 over wi-fi) before I could seriously commit to making the upgrade. It's more than obvious that this would involve some serious infrastructure overhaul - a la more 4G networks in place. However, I'm curious to know how many folks out there are patiently waiting (as much as you can) for next summer's iPhone 5/4G?

Does anyone have any insight as to why Apple kept the flash memory the same as the 3GS (16 and 32GB)?

That's the way technology circle works, think of it like a game of jump rope, always waiting for the perfect time to jump in, well you gotta jump in at some point or else you miss the fun.. and when iPhone 5 comes out you'll have the people who say, "I'm waiting for iPhone 6..."
