I've sold both old iPhones to buy the latest model on launch day. This is how it works.

Sell the old iPhone, wipe the info, take out my SIM. It's now the buyer's phone. They don't have to sign a long-term contract with AT&T (or T-Mobile if it's unlocked; I've sold both locked and unlocked), so they're paying more than the subsidized price for the privilege. ;) I take stellar care of my belongings, so they're getting a pristine 12 month old iPhone for between subsidized and full retail price. All they have to do it insert their SIM and activate it. Their plan is between them and their carrier. As soon as I wipe and remove my SIM, I'm out of that equation.

I don't terminate my AT&T contract when I get the new subsidy (or, as in last year's case, partial subsidy), I'm extending it. Like this year, my contract would go until June of 2011, but I'm pushing the reset button, so to speak, and am signing another two-year contract starting this month, to take advantage of the $199/299 price points. So instead of the contract ending 6/2011, it'll end 6/2012. Because I'm not terminating the contract, I don't owe any ETFs.

I've been doing the same thing for probably 8 years now, first with Verizon, then with AT&T.

I'm selling the 32gb white 3GS for $425, and paying $299 for the iPhone 4. :D

Get it?

Beautifully explained. I think the missing link for me was the removal of the sim card. Duh (right?) I know it's there, but I just don't think about it because it's out of sight. That would explain how folks are able to sell older hardware at a small profit for new hardware on contract.

ETF has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the device other than determining how much the fee will be. It is charged if you cancel your contract, not if you switch phones or sell your phone or whatever.

ETF is a non-issue for selling phones.

It was an issue to me since I didn't understand that by removing the SIM card before selling to a third party eliminates the need to terminate a contract. :p

Glad to help. :)

Who´s betting iPhone 5 will have redesigned antenna system?

I would put ALL my money on that bet! :D

The new antenna works great for me...i used to get no service in my basement with my 3GS and now i have 3 bars!

new antenna works great for me! stop crying and stop believing the trolls. its not as big of an issue as you believe it to be.

Works better than ever. Hope they don't change it. Maybe fewer trolls and some new customers would help....

No need to redesign the antenna, just replace AT&T with Verizon :p

All joking aside, my reception is definitely better than all previous iterations of the iphone. I had my wife's old 3G next to my 4 before i activated her new phone and the 4 had 5 bars vs. 2 bars on the 3G.

I don't.

The amount of people that are having problems is such a small amount they'll probably get replacements. It was probably just a batch of orders that have this problem.

Besides, even when the 3G had problems with it's case having stress cracks and everything, it didn't stop apple making the 3Gs with the same plastic back.

I don't believe it's a real big issue. Like max. 100 persons have said it has a problem. That's out of the 600.000 places with Apple (so not even ATT or other sales counted!)

And remember: people who don't have problems aren't going to complain. And I'm sure Apple will change something even in the iPhone 4 line so new problems won't occure in future iPhone 4 models.

perhaps just some light lamination of the metal. perhaps they could talk to
3M about it. the tape trick seems to work...

Then watch the battery size get smaller and people will whine about it next year.

The iPhone 4 will be the last great iPhone model with the best battery life. Apple cheapens out next year like they did with the 3G and 3GS and make smaller changes here and there that would make some things compromisng no matter which direction they go. I hear Sony is supplying the camera modules for next year's iPhone. Have you seen the SE Xperia X10 pictures? Not exactly a better thing.

Like LOST. Season 4 was the last great one next to Season 1. Season 5 was pretty good (but confusing) and Season 6 was one of the most disappointing.

4 will go down as the "favorite" model among the iPhones to many people years from now.
