My guesses...

Greatly improved processor (if you remember the first iPad A4 teardown revealed a chip that was built it September 2009 - so they've had a lot of time to make huge improvements.

No 4G. Not until it's use is widespread and 4G chips become more efficient.

Improved battery.

Improved cameras.

32gb/64gb

New case design for the back is possible but I highly doubt it.

Larger screen - just enough to fill in the black top/bottom.. I think there is a pretty good chance.

64GB HDD
8MP camera on back
5MP camera on front
4G compatiable
Biometric security
HD Output
1.5GHz Processor
Improved Graphics
Better battery life

Few other lil' bits.

it'll run iOS5 which will be Android based and the phone will automatically switch itself off when it senses a fanboi coming too close. This will help preserve battery life.

Oh and it will be so magical that instead of a microfibre cloth to wipe your pimple grease and fingermarks off the screen, Apple are working on a cloak of invisibility so you can't see the fact your battery just died, and that you have no signal.

More. Faster. Better. Everything. :)

Since AT&T has announced that it will start rolling out LTE in 2011, my guess is the IP5 will support it.

That's of particular interest to the AT&T haters since Verizon is also moving to LTE. :D

Don't know why everyone wants 4G. The 4G experience on the HTC Evo has been horrible so far. Poor service with 4G, and the battery % it uses up == no fun.

The EVO is a great smartphone. The problem is Sprint. Taking a page from Steve Jobs Playbook, Sprint can't pull off the "smoke & mirrors" hype like Steve Jobs. They try year after year to get back on track yet fail. They've seen huge numbers of subscribers leave. The EVO represents a near last chance opportunity for success. Only time will tell.

It's Alright, its alright, It's All-Right...!

Steve did say that iP4 was in development for 18 months so it's respectable that we can chat about it now....
The obligatory SoC updates, IC updates... the case will probably remain the same unless this technical flaw cannot be resolved adequately...
battery life...

Possibilities include touch sensitive rear chassis... solar cells on front and back panel behind glass...RFID stuff....

Who's waiting for the iPhone 5?

When the original iPhone went out, I badly wanted it but I knew that it would be best to wait for a 3G version. So I waited and I got the 3G version. I don't regret it at all. That was the good decision.

Now that my 3G is getting old, I am thinking of buying the iPhone 4. But after the yellow tint issues and the reception issue, I am thinking of waiting for a year and getting the iPhone 5. As Steve Jobs said, this version was a big leap compared to the previous ones. Maybe it would be best to wait for the iPhone 5. In a year, I am dead sure that Apple will resolve this reception issue.

Who's waiting for the next iPhone?

I too, came from a 3G, and I got the iPhone 4. The signal issue is the only issue I have with the phone, and I am going to go to the genius bar tomorrow morning.

Though, the speed and new categories of apps that you can run (Augmented reality, for example), make it worth the upgrade.

Not me. And you shouldn't either because...

1.) You don't know if you even have the reception issue. If it turns out you do, get a $2 meritline.com iphone 4 case, or just return the phone within 30 days. But odds are, you are among the majority that don't have this reception issue. If there's a yellow screen, get it replaced at the Apple Store.

2.) The difference in performance between the iPhone 3G and iPhone 4 is like light and day. You have no idea what you're missing out on.

3.) The next iPhone will likely be a very minor update. I am hoping that they will do another redesign to put the antenna back inside the phone and implement a 4.3 inch phone, but I wouldn't count on it. And neither should you.

The yellow tint issue, isn't an issue at all. The reception issue may be something they can easily fix. But each version of the iPhone wasn't without its own problems.

You can keep playing the next model game all you want. Just remember, electronics become outdated at around 6 months. So where do you draw the line to purchase? I say get it when you can afford it, because whenever you purchase it, it won't be cutting edge for very long.

dude i have the iphone 4 from the 3gs and havent experienced the signal thing or the yellow marks. idk if i'm just lucky but i love the iphone 4 and would highly recommended it. if youre not willing to take the risk though, wait a few months and see if they can resolve the present issues

I would agree the difference is like night and day. I come from the 3G as well and am loving every minute of the 4. And as I sit here typing this on my 4, I do wish they would increase the screen size but they'd be changing the resolution which is a pain for developers, but they did just do it. And besides, android phones come in all different screen sizes and resolutions
I would definitely upgrade if I were you. Don't get caught up in the I'll wait for the next upgrade thought process. And if they use the same body twice like they did with the 3G/3GS then you'll be eligible for iPhone 6 when they will (more likely) change the form factor.

You really shouldn't base your decision on what people are saying on these forums. Most of the people on here have problems are the biggest whiners in the world. They are too proud to buy a $2 case and fix their reception problems.

Basically it comes down to this - If you are willing to put a bumper or case on your iphone 4, which to me is a no brainer, than yes , buy the iPhone 4. If not, go ahead and wait.

I personally don't have any issues with or without the case on, but I also have great 3G coverage. That's the que for another macrumors member to reply to me by saying i'm lying.

Actually, my phone contract ends in September. So, in a way, it would be perfect to replace my 3G in September.

Since a few weeks, I have installed Whatsapp. Since it's free, I receive/send a lot of MMS with it. And everytime, you have to open the application again, close it again, open it again. It's so boring. And sometimes it takes ages to write text. During those moments, I surely would want the iPhone 4. I really want it badly. The only thing is that I cannot buy an expensive smartphone knowing that sometimes I will have dropped calls. I hate cases and bumpers as well. I do not want to hide this beautiful design under some lame cases. And I think the iPhone is big enough without adding some cases on it.
I am not really afraid to receive a yellow tint iPhone. It's really all about the reception issue.

Avoid iPhone 4 - Buy iPhone 5

Here's why you should _NOT_ buy iPhone 4, and wait until iPhone 5 is released at the next upgrade cycle (approx. June 2011).

As a long time Apple customer, iPhone & MacBook Pro user, I trusted Apple and bought the iPhone 4... BIG Mistake!

As a device it's simply stellar. As a phone it's marginal at best. The phone is so bad, that I will be using an AT&T BlackBerry Bold 9700 to make my calls. The new iPhone antenna is a failure for those of us that expect a phone to work without having to change the way you hold it. Holding a phone is a reflex action for most of us. It rings, we pick it up. It's not natural to stop and think, "oh gosh this is the fussy iPhone I better be careful".

Like most everyone else I signed a two year contract to get the iPhone 4 at an upgrade price, therefore I'm stuck with it. Furthermore, I paid an additional $30.00 for a $2.00 piece of rubber called a Bumper, since the CEO told us it was crucial to operation of the phone.

Returning it is not an option as I use a MacBook Pro & iPhone combo for all my content such as calendar, contacts, music, videos, and photos all residing in the Apple ecosystem via iTunes. Since I've just used my upgrade, I will end up paying hundreds of dollars more next year to get out from under this marginal iPhone 4 and into an improved iPhone 5. A smartphone that is sure to be better now that Apples decided to get serious and hire special antenna engineers (see link below).

Yes, I can hear it now, all the fanboys saying... that's the price you pay for being an early adopter, or worse, those fanboys who buy into the Apple company line and claim there is "no issue".

So to all of you who have _not_ made the same mistake I did, I urge you to wait until next year. If you do you will save yourself hundreds of dollars, hours of frustration, lost calls, and other inconveniences.

Thanks for the list of complaints that haven't ever been brought up!

Mine works fine and it's a fantastic product.

ok first of all, it is true that all phones have reception issues. and furthermore you have to be holding the phone in a pretty strange way during phone calls to replicate the reception issue. second of all, you will be eligible for the subsidized price of 200 next year when the new iphone comes out. EVERYONE IS. you will be able to sell your iphone for 200+ and get the new one essentially for free. stop bitching.

I say skip both and wait for iPhone 6! It wont have any bugs. I hear there will be worse issues next year!
