Why not the iPhone? :apple:

Why not, its called competition. I can see people wanting nothing to do with apple/iPhone/ATT for lots of reasons.

Different strokes for different folks. For me, the Droid does look impressive and tempting. I'm happy with ATT and how my iPhone works but its good to know that there's a viable alternative to the iPhone and the competition will also continue to drive development for the iPhone.

There are THOUSANDS of people lined up at the Verizon Store in Downtown NYC.

Oh wait. They're probably here for the parade...

The droid launch is sounding very much like the Palm Pre launch.

Yes, the similarities between the droid and pre in terms of hype and launch are striking. Both are supposed to be the future of a once-mighty company... Both are the first with a new OS... Both have been extensively compared to te iPhone... And so on.

Ultimately, I think the droid is just one of many android phones. I'm sure it will do well for verizon, but it will rather quickly be surpassed and forgotten when newer android phones come out. IMO its main impact will be to keep those vzn users with iPhone-envy from jumping ship, not to convert those who already have iPhones.

The fact that there is only one iPhone (ok, two right now, but close enough), by one manufacturer, with one version of the OS (on currently shipping phones) may seem like a limitation, but it's actually a big help to apple both in terms of media hype and user differentiation.

...competition is a great thing. Why wouldn't you want another cellular company to be successful? It will only make the iPhone better in the longrun (new features, etc.). Geez. Wipe the glaze from your eyes. Someone owning a Droid is not going to make your iPhone less valuable.

im sorry but that phone is just fugly !

motorola great design on the razr 5 yrs ago and this is all you can come up with ?

Yes im an apple fan nothing is going to beat the iphone.....storm pre droid...next !!!

Hi

In my view Android is a great OS, I have an HTC Hero and an HTC Magic. Its great for email, calendar sync via Google Calendar. I like the way I can leave a Twitter app running and new twitter messages show on the notifications bar in the same way as SMS or emails would. If you are used to a phone running a windows OS, a Blackberry or a Nokia then it feels just so much more advanced in someways.

However iPhone compared to say an htc Hero is like comparing a top of the range BMW with a basic entry level Ford. Yes they both do a lot of the same things but with Android its not quite as polished.

I don't know what its like in the US but in the UK and France Android handset cost a lot less than iPhone. If you are getting calendar sync and a good email system then lots of people will go for Android if they have never had these sort of things on a phone and don't want to pay the iPhone rates.

Top of the range does not = best seller.

Can't talk and surf at the same time?

Why would you buy a phone that does not allow you to talk and surf at the same time?

the next generations of the Droid will have much shorter lines, if lines at all. the iPhone had thousands line up at every ATT and Apple store because it was the hot new smart phone. As of now, the Droid is the hot new smart phone. So next year, when these hundreds that are lined up for this one and are still in contract, many less, if any will line up

Who are you talking to? I didn't see anyone wishing for the droid to fail.

Because lots of us can't with AT&T either because we're on edge (see AT&T's 3g map lately?). At least Verizon lets calls interrupt data sessions of one comes in. Can't say that about AT&T's edge.

Im trying the droid out after work today... 30 days free, why not try it. Besides, I am incredibly tired of AT&T... I get so many dropped calls lately :(

I went down to my local VZ store and played with the Droid and the HTC ERIS. Definitely agree what the LA TIMES guy said, nothing is better than having an iPod on your phone.

Language support is almost non-existence on Droid. I'm just happy that VZ customers are finally getting a phone that closing in with the iPhone's we experience.

Multimedia will always be an iPhone's strength I'd say. I haven't played with it on my Droid yet but I've heard the media player is pretty badly designed. That and the on screen keyboard (but it does have a real one I know ;) )are my only gripes right now but I'm liking everything else so far with the Droid.

I still have the iPhone though, just in case I don't like the Droid after this 30 day trial period.

Again I thought it was a worthy review to watch pointing out both good and bad elements. It is interesting how many steps it is to delete an app. The blackberry is pretty much the same.

And I wonder if it is really "that" hard to put video on the phone

I'm sure some will love it

Time will tell if it's a iPhone killer who knows every phone wants that title. That will probaly go tp some phone just desined well with out the company hyping it. Time will tell who knows maybe this will be the demise of AT&T and even apple. Really those wanting a droid and verizon enjoy.

iphone killer - I don't think so. It will definitely hurt the blackberry market ON verizon...

In my opinion, Verizon and Motorola are going after a niche market. That niche is the relatively small number of iPhone users who hate AT&T. Or, to be more specific, the relatively small number of users who are going to be willing to trade their beloved iPhone for said perception (be it real or imagined) of a better network on Verizon.

iPhone killer it is not. Just as nothing has dethroned the iPod, except maybe the iPhone.

Walk into a verizon store today to play with one. Did you get to touch it without waiting in a line? My point exactly. when the iPhone first came out, I couldn't even get into the store to touch one on the first day. And the 2nd day was a mad house.

LOL

65 people lined up for a midnight opening... reminds me of the Palm Pre launch.

Much ado about nothing.

i really like the 'wallpaper' of all these new droid phones, w/ the local weather, time, alerts, etc -- i wish this could happen on the iphones unlock screen w/ out having to jailbreak it...
