In my opinion, Verizon and Motorola are going after a niche market. That niche is the relatively small number of iPhone users who hate AT&T. Or, to be more specific, the relatively small number of users who are going to be willing to trade their beloved iPhone for said perception (be it real or imagined) of a better network on Verizon.

iPhone killer it is not. Just as nothing has dethroned the iPod, except maybe the iPhone.

Walk into a verizon store today to play with one. Did you get to touch it without waiting in a line? My point exactly. when the iPhone first came out, I couldn't even get into the store to touch one on the first day. And the 2nd day was a mad house.

I don't think many people are trying to say that the Droid is better then the iPhone, but it is a good alternative phone for people that wish to use the Verizon network. Verizon having a better network is not just imagined, it is the truth. Verizon offers 3G service to hundreds of smaller cities and towns that AT&T doesn't. AT&T has focused their 3G coverage only on the larger metro areas and eventually people outside of those top market areas want access to new technology as well.

how d hundreds lining up compare to thousands lining up for the iphone? its not like the iphone is gonna crash n burn anytime soon... Competition in the techie world is good as far as these things go :)

When iPhone's marketshare increases, just you wait till the whining " Plan too expensive, switching back to iPod Touch as it's a cheaper alternative. " threads. Cough...the spaz... cough

Anyway, there is no way for 100% marketshare but its good to see competitors for the iPhone's well-being. This way, Apple can improve itself and the iPhone will still remain an unbeatable device after all these years after its launch.

Personally I don't see what the issue is. There is plenty of room in the marketplace for the Droid, the iPhone and others. Apple do not need to (and are not aiming) for 100% market share...

Government would have stopped Apple before they obtain 100% market share. Can't have monopolies in America. Then again, maybe it won't be a monopoly if everyone chooses to buy an iPhone instead of some other phone...

On-Topic: The Droid does look like a really nice phone. The slider is stiff enough so that it doesn't wobble so if you really wanted to use it for only the touch screen you could. Reviews are pratically raving about how good it is. Only major flaw they found was the lack of multitouch in the browser and Maps.

Was at Verizon Tonight

my Ex is on Verizon and thus so is my daughter. I met them at the store to pick her up my weekend. the were adding and switching phones, both my daughter and I looked at the Droid for about 10 minutes while I waited. maybe it's because I am used to the Iphone but I liked it much better. salesmen saw me and my daughter looking at it while I had out my Iphone. Naturally tried to switch me not close for me. don't get me wrong it's a nice phone but not close imo. BTW there were no lines at the store no waiting and they had plenty in stock. one of the more popular stores in my area too. I see much more popularity then the Pre it's on a much larger network too after all, but that's about it.

The line is probably long because this is a great phone coming to Verizon. Also, the iPhone has been out for quite a while now. I would really expect a huge line up. :p

That poor guy was as clueless as <insert political figure> !
With out any research or real knowledge of the Android OS/ Droid hardware I was able to load 5gigs of music/videos/ring tones on a droid phone. This was done with out using doubletwist or any specific software, just good ol`finder and copy/paste.

The contacts were a bit more of a hassle as we had to export them to vcf then import them. I suspect we took the long route there but again neither one of us had any knowledge of WTH we were doing :D
The exchange acct went on/in with no issues.

We both agreed the media player is lacking but it works.
The App store is nice, most of the 'major' players are there(non-game wise).
>The reviewers ..iPhone has 100k apps and well 10k apps just doesn't compare. What a joke, I only saw 1 flashlight, 2 fart/burp apps in the android market place.

Over all in 30 minutes of hands on use of Droid/android I'd say its a great start to competing w/iPhone. The GPS thing is schweet can't wait to see it on the iPhone.

Why would you buy a phone that does not allow you to talk and surf at the same time?

Because lots of us can't with AT&T either because we're on edge (see AT&T's 3g map lately?). At least Verizon lets calls interrupt data sessions of one comes in. Can't say that about AT&T's edge.

Bingo.

Also, it's only CDMA Android phones that have this issue...don't forget that Android phones sold on T-Mobile's 3G or overseas with GSM 3G can talk and surf just fine.

"Five hundred phones is a lot of phones to sell in one day," Verizon Wireless spokesman David Samberg

I laughed at that. 500 phones in one day OMG! How will the iPhone ever compare...oh wait.
That's 500 phones from 1 store. ;)

AT&T and even Apple never had that many on hand at a single location.
You were lucky if an AT&T location had more than 40 iPhones.

One could also say:
Confused that there are millions of customers happy with their AT&T service?

I don't know about you, but I rarely hear 'WHY DO I HAVE SO MANY DROPPED CALLS?!' and 'HOW CAN I NOT PULL DOWN DATA WHEN I HAVE FIVE BARS ON 3G?!' from Verizon customers.

AT&T is awful, and if it weren't for the iPhone I'd be back on Verizon right now.

Funny, I had Verizon for a personal cell phone and I did have dropped calls and poor data. Now I have at&t I have about the same service.
My work gave me a Verizon phone a while back, so now I get to see 1st hand what areas work for what cell phone provider. I just find it funny my work gives me a cell phone (Verizon) that doesn't work in few of the offices at work, so to make a call I need to go outside.

Anything that pushes the iPhone to become a better value and better product is alright by me. I'm not bothered by the fact that people would buy Droids at all. I already have my next phone purchase in mind and its going to be Apple.

The largest problem with the Droid is going to be Motorola.. Just because the phone has good specs does not state it is a quality orientated manufacture making it Motorola forgot long ago how to make a good product. Android in its self is a good OS, but will more than likely be a Blackberry killer than an iPhone killer.

Not until the Droid fixes its e-mail services will it ever be a BB killer.

I almost bought motorola stock a couple of weeks ago. It might be a good long term investment, but in my eyes the droid is already a failure. With how much advertising verizon pumped into it you would expect huge lines and sell outs of the phone. The iphone was sold out before it was released. Yesterday, I was at the mall that had a verizon store and apple store; verizon store had 2 people, the apple store had 40. I doubt sales of the droid are going to meet expectations at this point. Just like the pre and the storm it is hyped so much as an iphone killer that there is no way the phone can live up to those expectation.

Who cares?

Really...oooh aaah the iphone is more popular take that!! What are we 12??

I am not switching to AT&T, I live in New York and I will not pay a phone company $90 a month for a service they can't provide me. AT&T sucks, end of argument, I don't care how cool the iPhone is, if I can't get my money's worth from AT&T then I will not be going with them.

Is it so hard to accept for the über fanboys that some people actually want to get what they pay for when they sign up with a telecom? The Droid is good enough of an alternative and I will be getting it because on Verizon I get my money's worth--I get SERVICE EVERYWHERE. I don't care if the iPhone never comes to Verizon, I will not be switching, and not because I'm a Verizon fanboy, I don't love the company but I get what I pay for with them. If the day comes that AT&T stops being the joke of a telecom that it currently is then I'd have no problem switching. But it IS NOT and will NOT be anytime soon. I'd rather have a decent phone and get to use it than the iPhone and be miserable because I can't use it as it's meant to be used on the sh*ttiest network in America.

Droid will not affect iPhone in any way.
My whole family was going to switch to AT&T to get iPhones. We were just waiting for the day when all of our schedules were free to do it... then the Droid was announced and none of us will be getting iPhones now. I'm sure there are thousands of other people who did NOT switch because they now have a perfectly good smartphone on a better network.

Competition is good for all consumers anyway.

So, you were saying?

Why not the iphone? Because its been out for months now, why the hell would there be lines still?

Lines occur at NEW launches, thats the way it is.
