Now, this is coming from a person who has had to deal with both networks. I am a meteorologist that now lives in Casper,WY. I was living in GA for many years and had the 3G Iphone. I absolutely LOVED my iphone. We had EDGE for a LONG time, and right before I got this job out here we got 3G where I was living. 3g network was VERY fast!! Kicked VZ AS*.... My speeds would be nearing the 2mb down and nearly 1mb up. Pretty dang good for Macon, GA. My friends "3g" speeds with VZ, in GA, were barely a 1mb down if he was lucky! Now, since there is NO native AT&T service in Casper, WY, I sold my iphone before I left and hopped on my mom's VZ family plan. I bought the MOTO Droid, (I know...partially my stupidity) and let me tell you it is NOTHING compared to the iphone. The camera is really good, but the OS is sluggish at times as well as it freezes. My iphone was never sluggish and it never froze! (Even Jailbroken) Now, Alltel is about to be replaced by AT&T here in Casper and I can't wait!! I can't wait to have my iphone again. These people out here, who have never had the choice, to get an iphone are in for a real treat. So, to my last point about the "networks". The 3g network out here is fairly slow. I get around .35mb to sometimes .70mb down. Hell edge is nearly that damn fast. So, IMO....VZ Network would STRUGGLE VERY much with iphones on there network. Hell I am getting rid of verizon when AT&T starts out here. So, hope that makes a little sense.

The people complaining about the AT&T will soon be complaining about Verizon.

The grass is always greener, folks.

Here's what's gonna happen... current iPhone users will jump to Verizon because they think it's better. What they don't realize is that current Verizon users will ALSO jump on the iPhone train. You think things are "bad"* now with AT&T? I think people will be in for a bad wake up call if they move from AT&T.

Anyone who wants to go to Verizon, I say, "go". All you'll do for the rest of us is speed up our network.

* I've never had any problems with AT&T or my coverage. Granted, I live in Tampa, and we have 3G all over the place, but anywhere else I've gone, inside or outside of the state, I've never had any phone or data issues at all.

I'm keeping mine. I purposely didn't port my Verizon number/line over to AT&T as Im going to wait until early next year to see if this happens. If it does then Ill pick it up and sell the AT&T one to pay for ETF and part of the Verizon one. If it doesnt happen and there is no sign of it happening then Ill port my number to AT&T or just suspend it until further notice that they eventually will get it.

Thinking about returning my iPhone 4 after reading the article by Bloomberg that Verizon will have the iPhone in Jan 2011. Would we be able to use the iPhone 4 on the 4g network? I wonder if apple has a new phone ready for Verizon.

There is no 4G hardware in the iPhone 4.

too bad you wont be able to use data and voice simultaneously. Or use your phone outside the US.

Too bad you don't know anything about the subject your speaking on. Go do some research and come back and edit your post. Both of those statements are false.

I dunno, Verizon seems way over hyped to me. Have any of you used Verizon? It definitely isn't much better than AT&T.

I work in IT and we recently went through a process to potentially change our cell phone service provider. Verizon was high on the list and we did a lot of testing with their phones. Around here, at least, I found the performance to be about average. There were areas where coverage was better than others and areas where it was worse.

I believe the "grass is always greener on the other side" arguments could be applied here.

Apparently in your area there isn't a great difference. In some parts of the US that's not the case. I had Verizon before switching to AT&T. I regretted my switch but wanted to give the iPhone a chance.

This is not the first "reputable" site that has said this, and they have said it before. WSJ has said it many times in the past.

The fact that Verizon have openly said numerous times they have no plans for a Verizon iPhone speaks to me more than anything. Verizon have taken the Android path and it will be that way for long enough. It will happen one day, but it will be when the Verizon 4G LTE network is built out enough.

Apple is probably making a CDMA phone, but it's more than likely for the Chinese market which is a LOT bigger than Verizon.

Actually, that's not true. The largest CDMA user base is in India which hit 100M sometime in 2009. China is right behind them. Verizon is currently @ 92M. So all 3 are very close in size.

I wouldn't worry about it. If you want to switch to Verizon you'll be able to sell your Iphone 4 on ebay for at least the amount you will have to pay to early terminate your contract. I have been able to upgrade to every version of the Iphone and sell my old one for as much or more then I paid for the newer version.

I am sure there will be many post about how this is more unfounded rumors which it may be. However the it just seems like there is more "where there is smoke there is fire" type information out there.

This is my plan if the Verizon iPhone looks attractive if/when released.

They'd be waiting a long time.

I think they might announce the Verizon iPhone in January, but I can't see it being actually available until June 2011, because that would fit with Apple probably introducing a 4G compatible new iPhone on both ATT and Verizon, and maybe other carriers.

I still think it won't be until 2012. At that point Verizon and AT&T will both have LTE up and working, and Apple can make one iPhone for both networks.

I wouldn't hold your breath about this January rumor. There were a lot of rumors about this summer as well - that obviously didn't pan out. Apple wants to stick with GSM for now.

Also, I know Verizon is a business and all, but it's very possible they don't WANT to deal with Apple and the iPhone. They seem pretty strong on the Android kick right now.

No, most likely a 4G iPhone will need backward compatible hardware for either GSM or CDMA. This would most likely mean 2 phones and most likely 2 different release cycles to spread the manufacturing and to prevent the launches on diff carriers from competing. That is unless we get an LTE chip that also supports CDMA and GSM...possible, but I'm not sure it's probable.

what is so damn special about verizon? My business phone is verizon and I have better service with my AT&T phones. I dont understand why people think it will change the world if the iphone is on their service. Once it gets on their service, then their data network WILL get slammed too!

They wont be able to handle it any better then AT&T. The same issues will still exist people. Lucky for me I have wonderful service and couldnt care less if the iphone goes to every carrier in america. I am just curious as to why people think its gonna be a whole new world if verizon had the phone.

AT&T has over 50 MILLION people using iphones on their network. Verizon has no where in the ballpark on their top selling phone. So I wish people would stop acting like verizon would just be this perfect carrier, when they arent.

Nothing's that special. But most agree they have superior coverage across the US. It's not true for everyone, but it definately is for others.

You need to check your stats BTW. A) AT&T had 30M iPhone users at the end of 2009 (I'm sure the recent launch increased that...but not by 20M), B) Sprint and Verizon both handle more data than AT&T

http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010...andled-16bn-more-mb-of-data-than-att-in-2009/

I will concede that there are more iPhone users than Verizon has smartphone users (approximately double) but Verizon and Sprint have WAY more data card users which accounts for the numbers in the Boy Genius article.

You don't need to be an expert to search for facts...

http://www.tradingmarkets.com/news/...d-s-largest-cdma-operator-in-2010-962159.html

Still small numbers compared to the GSM world...

Nobody said otherwise, but 522M users worldwide...or even just 92M in the US is a very large market to ignore.

And the numbers I described were the entire country. The article you quoted is just one carrier.

Here ya go...the article I was referring to. http://www.cn-c114.net/583/a419447.html

Either way, you helped me prove my point. The following quote made by another poster, "Chinese market which is a LOT bigger than Verizon" is incorrect.

Verizon is not getting the iPhone, ever.

Secondly, Verizon is good if you're an East Coaster. T-Mobile and AT&T are better if you're a West Coaster.

My iPhone 4 hasn't dropped any calls. My 3G did all the time. Improved antenna. My iPhone 4 surfs the web and gets other data on 3G much faster than my 3G did. So I don't have any reason to.

It also doesn't say fact or official, making it a.........................

................................rumor.

:D

As annoying as that post is, what I believe his point was is that you're saying Bloomberg isn't reputable, which tells me that you live under a rock. While Bloomberg may not be accurate, it's far more reputable then many sites. Again, no news can be 100% reputable when you're dealing with something that neither side has confirmed, but Bloomberg is not some fly by night site nor is it similar to Gizmodo and their uncanny ability to dig themselves deeper into a hole of humiliation.

Notwithstanding, until Apple or Verizon get on board with the announcement I'll figure it untrue, if it is true I would likely head over there if I am not already there when the Droid X drops.

Thanks for that info Steve Jobs....or are you Lowell McAdams? Oh, neither? Then you don't know ****. You're guessing like the rest of us.

We don't have to guess. We know.

AT&T's exclusivity ends in 2012. If I did my math correctly... let's see, 2012-2010... subtract the 0 from the 2, and the 1 from 1, and the 0 from the 0, and then.. the 2 from the 2... I get... 2.

Two years.

Two years.

Two years.

Two years.

Two years!!!

I don't think Apple is going to want to get sued by AT&T for some Verizon customers.

Again, I'm pretty sure they are also basing this on the fact that Apple will have CDMA handsets in the beginning of 2011. But China and Russia's CDMA audience blows Verizon's out the water and I'm certain that's where Apple's CDMA phone is headed.

Thanks.

P.S - Yes, I did troll you by repeating "Two years." in succession.

Edit - In the past, quite a few stories by financial news agencies such as the Wall Street Journal have reported articles based on information found out by their news reporters and financial analysts from people "inside" Verizon that Apple is set to announce a CDMA iPhone. This has been the case before every WWDC and January event from the past two years including this one. Most of the time the reason this happens is for either A) The publication wants bragging rights for reporting the story first, or B) Verizon is trying to sway some of AT&T's thunder.

There have been over 6 announcements in the past. This is meaningless. Most of the announcements also never stated the words "rumor", but it in fact was a rumor.

If it "Moos", has spots, is big, has udders, masticates, and has four stomaches, but isn't introduced as a "Cow", it most certainly is a cow.

Can Verizon handle data and voice at the same time ?

Last I heard, they didn't, so you are going to be losing a big feature of the iPhone if you are unable to surf the net and talk on the phone at the same time.

Either way, why wait for a rumored phone to be released in Jan ? What if they delay the release until June and release it as part of the big iPhone release in June ?

Thinking about returning my iPhone 4 after reading the article by Bloomberg that Verizon will have the iPhone in Jan 2011. Would we be able to use the iPhone 4 on the 4g network? I wonder if apple has a new phone ready for Verizon.

I would think Bloomberg is a pretty reputable site. It doesn't say it's a rumor either....

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-...ffering-iphone-ending-at-t-s-exclusivity.html

From the Bloomberg article: "The device will be available to customers in January, according to the people, who declined to be named because the information isn’t public. Natalie Kerris, an Apple spokeswoman, and Jeffrey Nelson, a Verizon Wireless spokesman, declined to comment."
It says "according to the people". I question the accuracy of the unnamed sources Bloomberg is quoting!

I dunno, Verizon seems way over hyped to me. Have any of you used Verizon? It definitely isn't much better than AT&T.

I work in IT and we recently went through a process to potentially change our cell phone service provider. Verizon was high on the list and we did a lot of testing with their phones. depending on where you are in the country... it's A LOT better than att. I use my verizon palm pre plus whenever I travel and my iphone has ZZZERO signal.

and about the simultaneous data/voice... I'll call them back

I think it'd be dumb to wait for Verizon, it may not happen for a long time. If you want the iPhone and have the funds, get it now. It's an awesome device and AT&T is actually pretty good (for me at least). The AT&T hate is really just an example of sensationalism, with people spouting off about it when they don't have a clue, or just feel like being negative.

On top of that, this is a RUMOR. I wouldn't base the decision on that one article. There are so many rumors about Apple products, and the Verizon rumor is one of the longest-running. It's been said that Verizon would get the iPhone for years now, and it still hasn't happened. I just feel like it's dumb to wait around for something that could very well not happen for a long while.

But hey, I could be wrong, and the rumor could be right ;)
