I have been on AT&Ts site before but it asks for a zip code to see the plans. I wanted to just get a generall idea from people about what they pay. You guys have more optional things in your contracts than us

I pay $85 a month after taxes for 450 minutes with rollover, unlimited data, and unlimited text. (I get a 25% discount)

We pay $199/$299 for the iPhone with a 24 month contract.

Doesn't that article quite clearly say that it's still a dream?

There are lots of things cellular networks can theoretically do, but they often don't do them!

No, it's available now using SVDO. It's just a handset chip upgrade.

Cool, here i pay £35 a month (inclusive of tax, 2 year contract) for 600 min (no rollover), unlimited texts, 500mb of data, visual voicemail and free wifi at certain places.

£129 for the phone

No? It says Verizon and Sprint haven't opted to upgrade yet but this was written back in 2009.

Fact remains it is possible if the SVDO update is in place.

But that update isn't in place so it's not actually a reality. A Verizon or Sprint customer using their phone today wont be able to use it.

I noticed on verizons site you have to pay extra to have visual voice mail. Sounds ridiculous to me as it's still data... Should be under the data plan not separate.

And you would know this how? If these Verizon iPhone rumors are true, this would only need to be announced in January when it's suspected to release.

I'm not sure what you're saying. As of right now you can't place a call while using data on Verizon.

That may change in the future, but RIGHT NOW it's not the case. Post #4 clearly used the word "current" when talking about the limitation.

Sigh, your post didn't say NOW. Regardless, your handset doesn't have the updated chipset. So if it is enabled, your phone isn't.

One other drawback to Verizon's current network: even in 3G, you cannot use voice and data at the same time.

Once again, today could possibly be inferred from 'current' [although today isn't specifically mentioned] but as I've stated, you have no idea if the cell sites have begun the update.

There are a lot of advantages to an exclusive network. There are disadvantages too. ATT has done a lot of things that before Apple was very unconventional for the industry.

Rarely in life are big decisions all pros and no cons. You just go with that you think will work best and hope for it.

I really think ATT gets an extra deep black eye because one, the iPhone dumps tons of data on their network, and two a whole lot of their customers are only with them for the iPhone. When customers are with you not because they want to be your customer, they tend to be pretty vocal and critical of any problems. That's not to say ATT can't improve, but Verizon ain't' all seashells and balloons either.

A lot of the ATT vs. Verizon is regional, a lot is "grass is greener on the other side."

ATT has better service in some areas than Verizon, Verizon has better service in some areas than ATT. People in the areas where ATT sucks (SF, NYC, etc) complain. The rest of us don't really care.

Here is the rub though, iPhone users use a lot of data which, of course slows down the network, especially in dense areas like NYC. If Verizon should get the iPhone (big assumption since it kicked SJ out of its offices last time it was approached) it remains to be seen if its network will outperform ATT once it is taxed in this manner, or slow down. Remember the iPhone is only on ATT whereas Android phones are spread out among various providers. It simply does not have the high concentration of users on a single network.

what a lot of people don't point out, that I love about AT&T is that with the GSM, it uses a sim card. A sim card is a little card that you are able to remove from the phone, put it in another phone, and go. Fully working and no problem. To change phones with verizon, you have to go to the store and wait. Since I love getting and changing phones, this is a big plus for me

The closest tariff offered in the UK is O2's £60 ($90) per month over 24 months.

Unlimited minutes, texts and wi-fi with 1GB of data. The phone costs £29 ($44) for the 32GB and the 16GB is free.

+1 for this, like next year when I upgrade most likely will have a microsim as well so when I take my mother's upgrade no hassle.

Some English-speaking people don't fully understand English, I reckon...

but as I've stated, you have no idea if the cell sites have begun the update.

Nor do you. And if they had, I suspect Verizon would be touting this all over the place, if they truly want the iPhone. You know, to counter the Apple ads that pointed out this drawback?

But we're digressing. The point of this thread was to explain to the OP, who lives in the uk, why an iPhone in its current incarnation (yes, today because the question was asked today) will not work on Verizon's current (again, today because the question was asked today) network.

That used to be the case, but in recent years Verizon has provided this as a self-service capability via their online account manager. I'm not on Verizon, so I can't this is true from personal experience, but a quick Google search indicates that it is true.

thanks for all the replies, I learnt something new today. Have never been exposed to the CDMA network and knew nothing about it until today.
The Sim card/lack of sim card also makes alot of things make sense now.

Updates for the Verizon iPhone in January 2011?

Since the rumor of the iPhone possibly coming to Verizon has been making it's way through the whole web, I would predict that there would be some sort of update or fix before they release it to millions of new costumers. Any news on wether this is going to happen or not?
