I would say this is about as close to "news" as it gets. However, the AP has run NOTHING on this yet. Back in 2000 when everybody was calling the election for Gore in Florida, the AP held back. It was one of the few organizations that did. So I would say this is still pure conjecture and rumor right now. It's the best substantiated one because Bloomberg is hardly some craphole like Gizmodo, but I wouldn't buy stock in Verizon based on this.

Verizon pay people to say that there is a phone coming in order to keep people from jumping ship. nothing more nothing less. att has no reason to fear. o and people saying att let people upgrade to lock is wrong. they did that last year too. and att's etf is lower than Verizon yata yata yata

just thing that people always say that are wrong.

I couldn't care less about an Iphone on Verizon, what will piss me off is if they revise Iphone 4 for Verizon.

I use both Verizon and AT&T. It will be interesting to see if the iPhone 4 for Verizon is a bad as my AT&T iPhone 4. I must say that I'm truly shocked at how bad Apple blew it. At first I thought the iPhone 4 was rushed to market to get ahead of the Android announcements and releases between now and the end of the year. However now that it appears that the Verizon version of iPhone 4 is sooner than later, it's all too clear where Apples priorities lie, and it's not about quality. It's the sheer greed of Steve Jobs. This is a guy that can sleep at night, no matter what he shoves out the door. The master of smoke and mirrors, cult leader supreme, he's worshipped by throngs of followers. Quite an accomplishment if you're into that sort of thing. I've gone from taking Apple seriously, to laughing at this side show of lunacy. After all, as a long time Apple customer, the company I used to admire is now nothing more than an extortion machine. It's all about the money. Customers be damned. When viewed as a source of entertainment, like the B movie it is, it's all rather entertaining. Tune in tomorrow for another bizarre episode of "Little Stevies Adventures".

there are always rumors that iPhone is coming to verizon.. i got tired of hearing about it. if there is gonna be an iPhone on verizon, i'll believe it when i finally see it.

I personally think they would only make such a switch during a new iPhone release. It just doesn't make sense to move to Verizon mid-product-cycle. First of all, a lot of people wouldn't buy it because they know a new one is only months away. And secondly, the users who do buy it in January would be "out of sync" with the release cycle and it would be very hard for them to do early upgrades in future years.

There have been rumors in the last few months of Apple hiring CDMA engineers. Since they spend 2 years developing each phone, it makes sense that the engineers would be working on iPhone 5. Just my thoughts...

ABC and every other news outlet is just reiterating was Bloomberg said yesterday.

Another rumor with ZERO proof. People "familiar with it". Lol. I'm familiar with the iPhone, Verizon, and the month of January and can present as much proof as Bloomberg's sources----NONE.

Until Steve Jobs announces it himself, it will always be a rumor. He's the only one who announces new things regarding iPhone. Gizmodo's iPhone leak was a rare exception and really only gave us pics of a phone, not much else.

I don't take that article as proof, only speculation. The mid product cycle argument is a very good one, I think, against Apple actually picking up Verizon in January/November/December or whenever.
lol I totally agree.

understanding the U.S ( verizon/AT&T)

Im in the UK and I just wanted to understand the U.S service providers and how it all works out there. I constantly see reports of people with iPhones on AT&T complaining about the network etc and then headlines of the phone coming soon to Verizon and verizon specific iPhone rumours.

so my question is: is the phone available on PAYG in the US? because with so many threads and articles about AT&T I never hear anything about Iphones running on other network providers.

Also why would a verizon "specific" iPhone be any different? is there something different about how the service provider operates or is it just a term for the Phone being locked to that network.

No, you have to sign a 2 year contract to get the iPhone.

Verizon uses CDMA for the cell traffic where as AT&T uses GSM, so that makes any phone on AT&T incompatible to verizon and vice versa.

People want Verizon because they have superior coverage, but cost wise, its a wash, actually verizon is probably a little more expensive.

Not it's not, and it wouldn't help a user take their iPhone to Verizon anyway, for reasons explained below.

Also why would a verizon "specific" iPhone be any different?

Verizon Wireless, despite being part-owned by Vodaphone, is not a GSM/HSPA network. They are using CDMA/EVDO which is completely incompatible with GSM/UMTS standards. Even if you unlocked the iPhone, there is no way for it to interface with Verizon's current network.

This is also why some of find the idea of a Verizon iPhone highly unlikely for quite some time: it means Apple would have to make a whole different set of iPhones just to work on Verizon.

One other drawback to Verizon's current network: even in 3G, you cannot use voice and data at the same time.

The likely timeframe for a Verizon-compatible iPhone is when Verizon finally deploys LTE, which it plans to do. But realistically, we can't expect immediately nationwide coverage of the LTE network. That could take years.

Verizon is CDMA rather than GSM.

Good question. I'm also from the UK and recently there was an article in the Daily Mail (news paper with some pretty bad writting) saying we in the UK are getting ripped off in the UK for the iphone on a contract when compared to the US. They ddn;t actually give any details on plans and what they included though.

Could you guys also fill us in on what type of plans you get and how much they cost?
