To anyone under 35 years old who thinks Michael Jackson's music was lame, you should be sure to at least checkout Michael's earlier stuff before making up your mind. Michael Jackson has basically two phases, the period of the Bad album and after, and the period before the Bad album. IMO, the Bad album and everything he made after that are all soulless silliness. But his earlier albums are super funky and groovy. If you're gonna check out only one album from his earlier phase to make up your opinion for sure, then check out his album called Off The Wall. If you have a negative opinion of his music and you haven't listen to Off The Wall, then you're making an uninformed decision.

I agree. I'm only 18 but Thriller is one of my favourite albums. Not my overall favourite, because I appreciate other artists a bit more (The Beatles, Lennon, McCartney, etc), but it's an amazing album all the same. And speaking of McCartney, he released quite a few duets with Michael in the 80's...

RIP.

Well said.

Off the Wall and Thriller are two fantastic albums.

The Thriller music video is like no other.

Totally. I was gonna suggest that they should check out both Off The Wall and Thriller before passing judgement, but I decided more people would be likely to actually take my suggestion if I only suggested one album rather than two.

I almost played Beat It today on my show, too. I had it singled out, and unwittingly decided not to. Funny since I hardly ever play MJ... global consciousness or something is weird.

Tomorrow, I'll have to do something in memorium.

This displays his influence much better than words. This diagram shows just a few of his songs and the songs that sampled/were inspired by them.
Thanks for the diagram.

:)

Understand.

Poor kids; Michael Jackson Junior, Paris Michael Jackson and Prince Michael Jackson the 2nd.

People scare me...

Like a number of people posting, I grew up to Michael Jackson so to speak. His music was the soundtrack to my childhood. I haven't given him much thought since Bad though. My musical tastes changed and he got to be extremely weird. Still, when I heard the news -- and I must have heard it very soon after the story broke -- it was a major shock. I was on my way home and sped up a bit to tell my wife (forgot my cell phone as usual). When I told her, she jolted... and then started complaining because I was late.

Am I the only one who couldn't care less?

I guess I'm a heartless bastard.

I don't think it has anything to do with heart. It's not like he was your neighbor or a relative. When famous people die, their death is symbolic. If you don't recognize the cultural significance (as shallow as it might be), then perhaps you aren't especially culturally attuned. You're not heartless though.

.....what is the point of coming into a thread where people/fans are mourning and celebrating a person's legacy if you're going to be an *******?

nope, one less perv in the world....maybe all those kids he messed with can rest a little easier tonight...being a great artist doesn't override being a child molester in my book

... but to suggest he'll be remember a millennia from now is errant rubbish.
As I said, he was a singer, he didn't cure diseases, he didn't save the world (although he cynically hi-jacked that cause) he sang songs, some people liked them.
Perspective is a bitch isn't it?
How many people remember the doctor's name who found the cure to smallpox, which killed over 300 million, or leprosy, or many other diseases? Now how many remember who sang "Jailhouse Rock" or "Like A Virgin" or "The Twist" or "Hey Jude"? The fact is, a famous singer is more likely to be remembered much longer than a doctor or engineer or many other professions. Perspective IS a bitch! It just depends on whose perspective!

So, Michael Jackson is dead. I kinda expected he would die young (he was 50), but at the same time I never expected that day to actually arrive, you know?

I'm not affected on a personal level, because I didn't know him and I'm not sure that I cared much for him as a person (he creeped me out somewhat, to be honest). But as a musician and a performer, his death is definitely a huge loss to the industry. I've always loved his music. He was an incredibly talented, if deeply troubled, man.

Wolf Blitzer is reporting that he's in a coma...

So many things wrong with that statement.

Seriously, I spent 5 seconds thinking about it, then got over it. Sadly, the American media will spend the next 3 weeks on this when there are huge global stories going on that should be getting that kind of attention...

I grew up listening to a lot of the Jackson 5, and of course early (what I would call late 70's - late 80's) Michael Jackson.

I think Dangerous is the last album that I listened to on a regular basis, and since then, maybe the odd single here and there.

I didn't particularly care for the kinds of things he was doing, or controversies that he was involved in, but like others have said, I didn't know him personally - I just knew him as a great singer who really had a profound impact on the music industry, and was probably someone a LOT of current artists looked up to when THEY were growing up.

So RIP MJ the *musician*...I think the other parts of his life can now safely (along with him) be laid to rest.

Quoted for truth. I won't believe for a second that he's not guilty. We've seen it time and time again...LA juries won't convict celebrities. Phil Spector was the rare exception, and even then it took a few tries. I firmly believe that OJ is guilty, Robert Blake is guilty, and Michael Jackson is guilty. Even if he's not, he's admitted to having sleepovers with little kids. Even if he never touched one inappropriately, it's still sick and disgusting.

Unless his will is in perfect order, this can drag on for a couple years like the Anna Nicole Smith saga and the media will be there to make sure we get every detail of it

Even though I didn't grow up with Michael, it saddens me how such a cultural icon that I took for granted is gone. I downloaded his thriller album from iTunes and regret I hadn't done so sooner. His music is a lot better than a lot of the crap we have out right now like Boom Boom Pow and Birthday Sex??!
