It makes you wonder what the landscape would look like if MS had started making hardware earlier.

....and if Steve Ballmer hadn't existed.

I am OS agnostic, yeah it is nice have all the sync stuff with my iPhone, but with most other stuff being powered by Google, I am going to have a serious look at the Surface Book.

Now that Microsoft is in the game, there will finally be some competition in this Apple-dominated (in terms of profit) PC industry. Hopefully we customers will benefit from it. Maybe bezel-less iMac in a few years or something?

I disagree, as much as I don't want to. The one thing I would not label either the Surface Book i7 or the Surface Studio as is 'elegant'. Sure, the Surface Studio display looks great. It's clean lines and uniform design are very Apple like, but then there's the godawful stand housing the real hardware, which is where the thought process and attention to detail ends.

As for the Surface book, don't even get me started on that hideous hinge. It's revolting.

Still, good effort from MS and impressive specs. As always though, it's rarely about the specs and more about the software. Still years away from the refinement of an Apple product IMO.

Agree absolutely. These are fugly machines. Can’t understand why people can’t see their have nowhere near the elegance or design aesthetic of an Apple device. Perhaps because we are all stale with familiarity over iMacs, etc.

And remember, no matter how good it looks, it runs Windows. W I N D O W S...

The comparable base model [$2300] was being claimed to be the highest config (which it isn't) and was being compared to the maxed out Surface, which is ridiculous. The maxed out iMac with comparable specs to the maxed out Surface is $3400. Please just stop.

$2299 is the highest STANDARD configuration for the 5k iMac. Anything beyond that is priced with add-on costs that are intentionally steep due to customization and profit considerations. However, if Apple wanted to include the higher specs you're talking about as STANDARD, then the price would be significantly less than $3400.

Plus, it'll look good in your office. :)

Did they mention if that hinge is stainless steel or cheap chrome plating?

One additional thing I do like about this system, is a wireless keyboard with a numeric keypad.

Did you hear that sound...

It is the sound of Apple dropping the ball.

Could Apple have created a surface studio like machine? Yes
Have apple fans and creative people wanted a machine like the Studio? Yes
Will make what we want... No

So sad.

Cons
As lovely as this machine is...
It's incredibly niche.
Aimed at pro's but has i7 rather than a Xeon.
it's $4100 for the one with the decent (mobile) gpu
They will sell 30,000-50,000 max
Max one still only has 32gb ram.
It's a machine this high end at that cost and has a 1 or 2tb spinner... No SSD option and that's terrible.
It runs windows - though most of the negative things about windows and compatibility are probably mute as it a single machine and made by MS so no driver issues etc.
Can't actually buy it outside of USofA

Pros
The screen looks amazing
The controller is something special
$4100 is nothing for a work machine... a cab driver would spend $50K on a cab

I wish they released a monitor only version so you could use the pen and controller on ... well a better spec'd PC... or how about a Hackintosh with some touch screen hacks etc - hell you could dual boot it

I view it as having a product ready for the holiday season, you have until the end of October to announce it , and get it shipped for xmas.

The way things are going, apple is surrendering the computer segment and focusing on the cash cow that is idevices. Microsoft will pick them off in the computer segment . I think apple will shock us tomorrow how thin and underpowered the new macs are.....relaying on thinness and gimmicks . I have a feeling the 2015 model will be superior like the 2012 Mac mini

Yeah I'm sure the 2015 model Macbook will be better than the new MacBooks with Skylake, USB-C and the new Iris pro...

Sure.

Very nice. So Apple is being surpassed not only in the smart phone arena but now also in desktops. It's their own fault by abandoning their pro users. I hope they introduce some cool things tomorrow. Because the grass is looking greener everyday outside the Apple garden. But I'm afraid it will all be about thinner.

Though to be fair, Wacom does gouge the hell out of everyone, simply because they're current the best of the best if you're a digital artist. I'd be willing to bet they're making about $1000 off each Cintiq sold.

But at the same time, the current highest resolution supported by the Cintiq line is only about a quarter (give or take) of what the Studio is sporting.
+1. Sure this falls into the premium market to compete with Apple and that's great, but what I'm REALLY hoping happens is that creatives start defecting from Wacom en masse.

Unlikely, but hey. I can dream.

Well, now it official. Apple is a Cell Phone Company, and Microsoft is the Computer Company. Satya Nadella is licking his chops. Tim is thinking about Magic and singing Kumbaya.

Apple and Microsoft have switched. The next 12m will determine if Apple has anything left in the tank. My God, to be reading an article about innovative, well executed, overpriced hardware coming from Redmond is like waking up from a dream where I was stuck at the C/ prompt in DOS. Just plain disturbing, and very, very sad. :apple:

I disagree on the "very sad."
We love Apple, but I'd rather see technology advancing than not. I don't really care if it's by Apple, Microsoft, Oracle, or CP/M.

I still don't see any way to buy it from there. All I see is marketing talk about how W10 E is a cloud service. Do you have a link for the actual Windows package that I can buy? Or do I have to get it as a service, for free I imagine.

Links to license resellers are at the bottom of the page.

Well the specs are middling at best - Spinner drives with 2tb max and 32gb for $4100 is a lot.

Windows 10 is shocking. There is so much inconsistency with the 2 design styles and most of the time you are happily in the Metro side and get booted out to the Classic side... i.e to look at anything to do with the system... and all their metro apps are crippled beyond usability... even the Calender and email is terrible.

From the link you provided...

"Windows 10 Enterprise edition is available exclusively through Volume Licensing and the Cloud Solution Provider program."

Yes of course, because as we know it, the vast majority of Windows users use Enterprise ed...*

The vast majority of Windows users use a cracked copy of Windows 8 Home on a $300 laptop and their experience sucks balls.

Deservedly so.

How could it not suck balls in every respect?

We are talking about decent machines with Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise here.

Those are pretty usable.
