Yes. This is why Microsoft strategically does their event one day ahead. In the past, they have missed the mark. Let's see if they have this time.
Even though Microsoft announced their event before Apple announced theirs?

This does not correspond with my experience with windows 8.x or 10. Preferences or settings always appeared on one of two places, control panel or settings. I am just skeptical you have used the os. Its not complicated and is extremely easy to navigate in desktop or tablet mode. It needs more optimization for sleep/wake and power issues

I have used Windows 10 extensively, both in VMs and in actual hardware. Windows 8, I can't believe you would even defend as a desktop operating system (and even less so it's server OS relations. The first time I walked up to a rack in a data centre and was greeted with "Tap to unlock" I was more than a little bemused). I am, in fact, using it daily right now as I'm contracting at a large PC manufacturer who insist that I must use their brand on-site for some tasks. I definitively concur with your points on both sleep/wake and power because, despite most definitely being configured to never hibernate (yes, i did it correctly) every now and then, instead of sleeping as it should, it hibernates (or at the very least requires pressing the power button instead of mouse/keyboard and goes through a relatively lengthy resumption) and on battery it is a sorry, sorry joke. Nothing new for Windows, not even Windows 10 specific. The UI is the problem for Windows 10, MS walked back some of the most egregious errors in Windows 8 "Desktop" mode like full screen start for Windows but really if you compare this to the simple elegance of Windows 2000 it is in a sorry, sorry state. As a counterpoint, at least search finally works. Only 8 or so years too late.

Shall we talk of the utter failure of "modern" apps?

I wouldn't touch a Surface book the first iteration was riddled with problems still plaguing the machine after 8 months of updates, Paul Thurott is still having overheating issues, and Leo Laporte gets two hour battery time out of his, if MacBooks were released like this the mac faithful would have the pitchforks out

Leo Laporte only puts up with it because he likes the form factor and has 20 other PCs available to him. The average person would be utterly irate with that kind of battery life + bugs and would be a lost customer to Microsoft for the next 10 years.

Depends which chips they choose.

There isn't even really a choice at the moment. If you intend to play above the "ultrabook" space, the chip that goes in the MacBook Air and it's PC brethren, then you only have two choices and they are both Skylake. 28w dual core chips or 45w quad core ones.

There is a choice. The A10X. Then the A11X-A15X. Eventually Apple own chips become good enough for even Mac Pro.

If you use Windows for work 8 hours a day and not just as a glorified game launcher (aka Wintendo) then perhaps you'd feel different. Windows is as always, a death by a thousand pinpricks and coming back to my 5K iMac every day is like taking a breath of fresh air for the very first time.

I'll disagree with you there. I would say when I use my PC it's like death from a thousand paper cuts, not pinpricks. ;)

My rmbp had wireless issues for 12 months, my 2013 Mac Pro still has broken BT..... My 2009 IMac always had loud buzzing noise with screen off etc.... I had to put up with them all. Mac faithful put up with a lot actually.

Then why does Apple enjoy the best customer loyalty in the business?

I'm about 80% certain that Apple will go this route... eventually. I personally think it's 2 or 3 years out though. I'm not pretending that's anything but a guess.

Also, while I accept I'm a nice user, a lot of my professional use of Macs involves running virtual machines so it will present a challenge and a decision point for me. Unlike other irate "professionals" I'm not under the misguided impression that I'm an important enough target market for Apple or anyone else for that to ultimately make a difference though. We'll see.

What I'm talking from this is that you find "putting up" with issues preferable to getting them serviced. That seems like you problem and not an Apple problem.

The article missed the most critical part in any desktop computer nowadays: the GPU. I was going to applaud Microsoft, because I thought "Pascal!". But no, they chose Maxwell. It seems obvious that Microsoft wanted here to follow Apple steps of choosing low performance GPUs (well, not so closely because Maxwell is better than Apple choices these days). Saving money in the GPU is bad. Apple is getting now the consequences, and Microsoft will.

Then why does Apple enjoy the best customer loyalty in the business?

Cause of the OS and customer support, the hardware is also very well desisted on the eye, it does not mean though they don't have issues .

I really love my 2009 iMac, it buzzes loud with the screen off, what choice did I have ? You will find every generation of product has some issues. In 2009 the iMac was by far the best machine in its class even with buzzing scree...(when off)

If you can't see the appearance borrowed from the iMac I don't know what to tell you. Their entire line is Apple color-schemed now. They're clearly trying to match Apple's aesthetics. Don't be silly.

Not just borrowed from the iMac but quite possibly from one of Apple's patents that they were granted in 2010

Do tell. The 2013 Mac Pro BT issue is software, and rhe 2012 rmbp was also software.....do tell, now was I going to get those serviced?

Maybe turn up to the genius appointment and be told the hardware was fine.....did that.

Maybe waste mine and apples to demand the same machine with the same hardware / software and the same problem, no, I will not do that.

It's a good idea to separate the computer from the screen, which allows for a thinner screen and no chin.
Touch screen that size may suit some people.
The price is the killer $2999
but tomorrow we will have the same old spec'd iMac with an update some time next year maybe

Are you under the impression that every user of 2013 Mac Pros have "broken BT" (your words)? Do you think all of the users of 2012 rMBPs suffered "wireless issues" (at least more so than anyone using wireless technologies on anything)? Most obviously wrong, and I note you elected not to mention it this time, do you think your iMac "buzz(ing) loud with the screen off" is normal? That's bizarre. If Apple actually shipped generation after generation of products with fundamental issues on basic features they'd be long out of business.

Meanwhile MS can't get a single generation of Surface w/o major problems. Much less 2-3 in a row.

I love the hardware Microsoft has been coming out with. I know Apple has been consistent in their view of desktop and tablet being different but I don't see that view holding up for long.

It's a shame that the software consistently has issues on the Surface devices. My guess is the Surface Studio will be no different which is a shame.

Let's start with iMac

http://******.com/?q=iMac+buzzing

If you are really keen look into the 2009 model, common issue.

2012 Rmbp works fine now, for 12 months though I had awful wireless....google MacBook and wireless issues...Go on ;) I used wired

I'm sorry but there is nothing magical about macs, we mac users have seen many many products shipped with fundamental issues , thankfully many were fixed in time due to software. Please do your own research here

My Mac Pro , yeah it's a well knows software driver issue, community found the outdated drivers that needed desperate updates, which might have happened in sierra, but I don't have time to waste my time so just used a wired KB and mouse.

MS & Intel have had a full year to work the Skylake kinks out. I do not think this device will have anywhere near the issues the SP4/SB had. Not saying it will be 100% bug free, but probably will be ok.

Also they are not rushing the release of this. The first 2 SKUs are releasing 12/15. The 3rd is early 2017.

I have to say, Surface Studio is really appealing to me. I hope Apple will at least mention something about iMac, or Mac Pro tomorrow...

Gold iMac, Rose Gold iMac, Jet Black iMac, Just Black iMac . I guess they will refine the current design, maybe thinner bezel, better display, new keyboard with magic toolbar

I think being able to use Apple Pay using the Magic Toolbar will be a big narrative tomorrow. Probably some kind of Health stuff too.
