For chess players like myself, this is wonderful. Many chess programs, such as chessbase, are windows only. The ability to run these programs with a pocketable device has me salivating.

LOL with all the people praising this. This looks like a piece of crap from the get go. Dual screen phones is nothing new, plenty of Android OEMs have tried it (and they look a lot better than this), and none of them continued doing it because it just doesn’t work, and nobody wants it.

Besides, Microsoft has shifted their company’s vision from mobile into AI. Microsoft won’t really care much about making hardware (just look at the ridiculous USB-C adapter for their Surface Pro) anymore. AI and Azure are their priorities.

Only it's not a phone. If you read the article, you would understand that the device is not a phone and not trying to be a phone.

Microsoft is working on a pocket-sized dual-screen Surface device according to information sourced from Microsoft internal documents and shared by The Verge.

Called Andromeda, Microsoft's dual-screen Surface project has been in development for at least two years and it's designed to "blur the lines between mobile and stationary computing," according to an internal document.

Microsoft's device will feature a wraparound display that bridges the gap of the hinge when it is fully opened, and according to The Verge, December renderings shared by David Breyer are "identical" to the current prototype versions of the upcoming Surface. The pocketable Surface can be folded in either direction or laid flat, as can be seen in the renderings.

Microsoft is said to be experimenting with stylus input for the pocket Surface, with prototype devices equipped with styluses and notepad-like apps for note taking.

The Verge's sources warn that work on Andromeda could be ceased at anytime, but Microsoft is said to have tentative 2018 release date plans, which would mean development on the device is nearing completion.

Some nebulous rumors have suggested Apple too is exploring some similar concepts, working with LG to develop an iPhone with a foldable display. Apple explores many concepts and designs for its devices, so there is likely to be some truth to the rumor.

The folding display technology being developed by LG is still a few years off, so if Apple moves forward with some sort of design that's similar to what Microsoft is working on, we won't be seeing it for several years.

At the current time, Apple is focusing on edge-to-edge displays and making a transition to OLED technology. In fall 2018, Apple is expected to introduce a second-generation 5.8-inch OLED iPhone X, a 6.5-inch OLED device that can be thought of as an "iPhone X Plus," and a 6.1-inch iPhone with an LCD display that will be available at a more affordable price point.

All three devices will feature edge-to-edge displays and no Home button, instead adopting Face ID and the TrueDepth camera system.

Nintendo already made it! It;s called the Nintendo DS but it doesn't have a browser, app store or 4G LTE.

So tired of hearing about these ugly folding tablets. Call me when they at least start to resemble the tablets in West World, but ideally when they get to the level of the “tablets” in The Expanse. :)

Very true. But it seems weird that they are attempting to make it pocketable like a phone.

It's small... but it's not a phone... so will you carry this device and a smartphone? That seems a little excessive.

Or if it's meant to be left behind on your desk in the office... and thus used in your office... then why not use your laptop or desktop in your office? Or a regular non-folding tablet?

That's why many of us here are scratching our heads about what this actually could be.

I think we can all agree that a foldable phone that expands to a larger screen is the ultimate fantasy. The one device you have with you all the time... with an available larger screen experience.

But this is not that. This is another device you'd have to carry along with your phone.

Or if you don't carry it... then why make it foldable in the first place?

Why would you want a dumb OS on a pro device? I can't even do something as basic as putting an active SSH session in the background on my iPad without it dying.
How is this a “Pro” device? It looks like a PDA. I saw hundreds of similar devices in court in the early 2000’s.

This doesn’t look like something designed for an SSH session. It looks like something for a different kind of professional.

I suppose we’ll find out if they ever release it.

I remember first seeing the Nintendo DS (codname Nitro) and the technology blew me away.

Gameplay across two screens. It was more revolutionary than the Nintendo Switch.

Don't forget, Nintendo had the dual screen 'Game & Watch' line decades before the NDS.
They were amazing and fetch a pretty penny nowadays.

I don't really see the point, but it'll be interesting either way I guess.

The replies in this thread are so predictable. I guess most are happy with innovation meaning - removal of ports, milking older tech for years, animojis, watch bands, etc.. I think its great that some companies are willing to push the envelope and think outside the rounded rectangle which Apple so proudly defends at all cost.

You should blame Macrumors, they are writing these articles which are not in any way related to Apple, just to make more $$ on advertising.

And then they even add this, which has no relation to the article, think some of these articles are badly written

Enough with the gimmicks MS. You need to make a solid functional and semi-stylish notebook/tablet.

You do realize this is a render and has not actually been confirmed by Microsoft, right? Also, not sure how this would be a ‘Gimmick’ since you have _No_ first hand experience something that doesn’t exist yet.

Looks awful. Just like everything they do now, Microsoft will rush this to market to be 'first' and then Apple will design one better.

Did you actually read the article or this thread or did you only glance at the pictures? Reading is not that hard. If you would have read it you would have noticed that the whole design is a render NOT by Microsoft, but by completely unrelated people based on a rumor.

If the rumours turns out to be true, then thumbs up to Microsoft for trying something different. Remember the days when Apple was not afraid of trying and sometimes failing too.

Hey, when you're not wasting time with politics, you actually create new and interesting products. Risky? Sure, but you do it. Ya know, like Apple did for years...before they didn't.
