The replies in this thread are so predictable. I guess most are happy with innovation meaning - removal of ports, milking older tech for years, animojis, watch bands, etc.. I think its great that some companies are willing to push the envelope and think outside the rounded rectangle which Apple so proudly defends at all cost.

Because it is a damn cult, more than ever. Especially on macrumors most people are mean and rude, everything Apple does is great, Android/Google/Microsoft suck blablabla... no common sense at all.

These days Win10 and Android are so close to iOS and MacOS, in some parts even (way) better, but most Apple fanboys just aren't able to see the big picture; technology is exciting at the moment, and Apple is just playing a small part in it.
That’s all fine, as long as you accept that responses like yours are just as predictable. It’s just as biased to be primed for forum warfare, wielding terms like “cult” and “fanboy” like blunt instruments as it is be a blind follower of a company. Like a sad number of others these days, many around here believe that an opinion other than theirs is wrong by definition.

iPhone "Flip" anyone?

I heard a lady just the other day saying how she loves her iPhone 7 Plus, but it's pointless as a phone on the go because its so big.

What if Apple did an iPhone that could fold in half. Open up when you want the extra space, or keep it folded to use as a phone.

I made a pic back in 2009 of a 3GS like that... dodgy bezel around the screen however made it silly. The modern edge-to-edge screens however could fix that.

Dual screens? Does that mean with VR googles on we’re able to observe the “blue screen of death” in 3D?

I hope all these companies develope a phone mode OS when folded and tablet mode OS when unfolded. This would merge both device requirements.

Imagine if an OS and app can run in phone mode, tablet mode and laptop/desktop mode. The battery and performance can scale up/down depending on the mode of the device it has been placed. Low power phone mode, normal power tablet mode and high power laptop/desktop mode.

App/Game developers can create one app, vice 2-3 versions and the power requirements and graphic settings can scale accordingly. Imagine a world and day-to-day life with only one device.
That is the most stupidest thing over read today.

Don't see this happening. The tension on the screen and the constant bending would just destroy it. I don't think were there yet.

Apple really needs to step its game up with regards to Mac hardware this year... or just give up on Mac hardware and license OSX so I can run it in a VM.

but.. why..? The computer and software development is really dead right now. All we get is gimmics and useless features, and above all, changes on perfectly developed workflows and fixes on problems that does not exist. (and subscriptions)

Microsoft Courier 2.0.

Why not announce when ready? It's the equivalent of Apple announcing their car, now. The tech press need to up their game. Oh yeah, forgot, the tech press cares little beyond clicks and ad impressions. A point against MR for not mentioning Courier.

And why are Microsoft using this wallpaper? It's so close to the wallpaper Apple included with and used heavily in the marketing of iOS 9: http://i.imgur.com/swl1WmC.png

Microsoft has announced nothing. It's a render from someone not associated from Microsoft who made something up based on a patent application. The wallpaper is the render guys idea.

Yeah, I've also been frustrated with things moving backwards. Even simple things like audio/video chat are done poorly, in some ways worse than before.

Irrespective of what anyone says.
This is the future
Phone and Tablet as one item, fold-able small device.

Going to take years to get right, but it's the future. No point in two devices.

This is classic FUD: Microsoft style. When the competition is moving forward and you don't have something to counter it, you ANNOUNCE something in the works that is "new and disruptive". This introduces fear, uncertainty, and doubt in the minds of potential customers and investors about buying and investing what is here and now. The goal, get them to hold off and wait.

No, this is classic FUD: The Verge style. It is quite clear when you read the article.
Microsoft did not announce anything. It's a rumor posted by The Verge, based upon a supposedly leaked internal email. Now this rumor is placed in this thread by MacRumors, to make the confusion even worse.

You are either a software/game developer or you feel privileged to unnecessarily contribute to global pollution/waste/resource extraction, etc to feed your temporal addiction/stimulus for entertainment/communication, etc.

Apple’s motto, “Think Different(ly)”.

Oddly enough this is where computing in the industry is heading, in Steve Jobs own vision where mobile computing is the prominent hub and desktops are the trucks. This vision will only be extended into AR/VR and AI/ML. Some foresight on your part would see this progression within the industry. Does this mean that workstations will cease to exist, nope it just means that mobile computing is getting more powerful to compete with the present work done on laptops and entry-mid range desktops.

That is okay though, continue living in your bombshelter/bunker while the computing/mobile world advances to unification.

There is no point for most daily users even in the business world to have a phone, tablet, laptop and a desktop. With eGPU via Thunderbolt/USB-C the concept of even advanced gaming can be foreseeable.

FUD or not, even if Microsoft is working on such a concept/product or not. Samsung has already demonstrated a similar concept for an upcoming mobile device possibly this year if not next, with a rumoured name of the “Galaxy X”.

This is a eventuality of the evolution/progression of the mobile phone to merge with a tablet. Consider one of the devices provides more screen/battery and processing power than the other due to limitations of physical size.

The question is will this actually be released this year or in the near future in any form is quite intriguing.

I understand what you are saying and I agree. But I was replying to @sracer who was claiming (or agreeing) that Microsoft announced this (out of FUD). Which is pertinently false. Lot's of people posting in this thread seem to think that simply because they did not read the article properly.

So many criticisms based on so little paying attention. Microsoft hasn’t announced anything, and the pictures you see are simply a fainciful artist’s take based flimsily on patents.

No. I actually did read the article. This isn't the figment of The Verge's imagination but repeats some of Microsoft's own statements and others like "tech enthusiast" Paul Thurrott. That is how FUD works... sometimes by direct means, other times by others who are playing along.

This type of stuff happens on a regular basis... floating trial balloons through the tech media and gauge public response. Since they didn't publicly say anything directly, they can plausibly deny any and all of it.

You can make up all kind's of conspiracy- or other theories and say 'that's how things work', but that is your theory and not based on anything substantial. One thing IS fact: Nowhere in the article is mentioned that Microsoft announced it (actually quite the contrary). Fact is that there are rumors about these devices. Who started those rumors is anybody's guess.
Just because you say FUD does not make it true. It just as well can be a figment of your imagination.

It's an iOS limitation so it doesn't matter what app. Wait and see what happens on iOS after 3 minutes. Linux, Windows, Android, ChromeOS, MacOS, etc. all behave normally and run indefinitely in the background as expected.
Wow you are correct. However, I don’t know about the three minutes you provided. Terminus kept a connection for about 5 minutes while the screen was on. I took a shower and when I came back the connection timed out. I recommend using SSH-Keys to speed up connection and nohup/disown if you’re using bash to prevent your tasks from dying upon disconnect.

Thats one thing about MS is they are always innovating .
[doublepost=1530325090][/doublepost]

I'm guessing you haven't seen what MS has done so far with Windows 10?? 800+ million Windows 10 Devices. PC's, Laptops, Tablets, Game Consoles, POS Machines, Banking ATM machines, Healthcare Machines etc.... All Windows 10 Devices. Oh dont worry MS or their partners will be introducing Phones down the road. Once Everything is Windows 10 and the App stores and cross compatible its going to be awesome with Windows 10 Devices. That's their s strategy
Don’t think you understood my post. I’m just saying look at surface hybrid hardware. That ain’t the future.
[doublepost=1530383218][/doublepost]
I agree completely. I've not seen anyone talk about this yet but imagine what you COULD do with cameras and AR glasses. No need for prescription lenses, the camera could compensate for the wearer being near or far sighted and enhance what is shown in the glasses (really bridging the gap between VR and AR). You could even get "bionic" vision like Col. Steve Austin from the 1970s "Six Million Dollar Man" series.
I remember reading that Google Glass was gonna try to be the prescription glasses killer. They should’ve gone that route instead of the geeky/whatever route they did go with.

You think computers evolution is limited to faster RAM, more dense CPU’s, and faster storage? Yea it happens when you buy too many apple gadgets. You must be using some high end tech at work.

Smart devices are so smart they need keyboards, digital simulation or you can add your even "smarter" physical one to iPad "Pro", rendering moot the whole tablet concept while running candy crush OS. Also, forgot iOS versions specify emoji work insistently, a clear remark of the type of "future" functionality.
You’re not thinking far ahead. Computers aren’t limited to what I’ve mentioned. I’m saying that’s all people will focus on. Surface hybrids sucked, phablets didn’t last long (Samsung originally had their phablets run tablet apps), etc. Again, what are you thinking will increase productivity other than extremely fast processing that comes with faster RAM, denser CPU’s, etc? Hybrid devices hinder you in most tasks (like how the surface hybrid couldn’t be placed in your lap comfortably) and don’t offer enough gains. Is it so hard to admit apples approach really that hard to swallow?

Most people just read the headline/ title of an article and make a snap decision/opinion. My comment was not directed at you in any negative manner, considering this is a "rumour" site :)

Love the innovation companies are hinting at with this kind of device.

.. and the number of patents they have, ya...

Now, who will be the first one to actually get one out to the public. That's the only question i wanna know.
