It’s a nice looking device, but MS don’t have an OS to put on it anymore since stopping windows mobile. I guess they could just make it a surface like device and use the arm version of windows 10, but then you have the poor app support.

Rumor is: it can run Windows 10 AND Android. But there is a LOT of unsubstantiated rumor, so your guess is as good as mine.

Can't an Ipad do a split screen? So, there you go two screens without the fold.
Now you just need a big enough pocket...

Great, more worthless hardware from Microsoft. When will they learn to give up and just do corporate stuff and give up the rest?

At the current time, Apple is focusing on edge-to-edge displays

C'mon, Apple! Dispense with the 7 year old marketing hype that now reminds me of this "technology"....

I think it looks cool, if announced this year I will definitely watch the keynote to see the announcement. It really seems Microsoft has stepped up their game, and yes I’m saying this as an Apple fan! :)
Exactly! Windows 10 has a more uniform user experience across desktops to tablets than OS X>iOS. Microsoft's hardware exudes premium, Apple level quality. Microsoft is a much more nimble competitor under Nadella than it was under Ballmer. Marketplace competition is terrific for the advancement of new technologies.

The replies in this thread are so predictable. I guess most are happy with innovation meaning - removal of ports, milking older tech for years, animojis, watch bands, etc.. I think its great that some companies are willing to push the envelope and think outside the rounded rectangle which Apple so proudly defends at all cost.
Unfortunately a lot of Apple users are arrogant and close minded unless Apple does it in which case its the best thing ever. What ever happened to the days when people were excited about new technology and companies pushing the envelope regardless of the brand. These days you just get childish comments and people acting like they are part of a damn cult. When I was growing up we didn't have phones or computers, so when both of those became mainstream people got universally excited, I sure miss those days.

Personally, I wouldn't go that far. It definitely looks cool, but I see devices like this as more of a gimmick right now. Too big to be a phone, potentially compromised on the tablet end (software/battery life/performance). Now if someone came out and had really perfected the hardware and software (not happening first try), I'd definitely take a look, but I have been really happy with iOS only for over a year now that I don't have much want/need to change. I just don't see the value in a Surface as their are plenty of cheaper options that perform generally the same as a laptop, while tablet mode is a bit of a joke.

I am open to see what happens here though and it's definitely a cool concept, but I need to see it all working in action before making any real decisions. I think we are years away from this being feasible.

If it’s been in the works for years as is rumoured then they might of had time to perfect it.

I’m an Apple fan but I have to give Microsoft credit where it’s due they have been making some quality looking devices with the Surface, I can’t speak for what they are like to use since I don’t own one or have never usesd Windows 10 (unless you count the software on the XBox One?) my last Windows experience was before I switched to Mac in 2011.

The Surface as a device has me conflicted because half of me thinks it’s pointless while the other half can see the usefulness of having a computer that’s also like a tablet eliminating the need to buy a laptop and an iPad.

On the other side of that tho I kind of think Apple might be right when saying that you can’t put everything into a device because it will succeed at being neither.

Because it is a damn cult, more than ever. Especially on macrumors most people are mean and rude, everything Apple does is great, Android/Google/Microsoft suck blablabla... no common sense at all.

These days Win10 and Android are so close to iOS and MacOS, in some parts even (way) better, but most Apple fanboys just aren't able to see the big picture; technology is exciting at the moment, and Apple is just playing a small part in it.

If they don't hurry, they're going to lose people (perhaps myself included) to Surface Book + Andromeda-style ecosystems, where hardware makes up for potentially less integrated software. I love my iPhone, Airpods, etc. But pricing and hardware on the computer side is pretty abysmal atm, and iPads won't cut it for what I'm doing until they have mouse support, drive external screens, etc. I'm actively looking to upgrade, and Mac has nothing to offer me atm.

Come on Cupertino - you had a great lead and you let it go to your head... now competition is catching up. More choices in the market = more competition...that's a good thing for all of us who love tech, methinks. Looking forward to seeing this concept come to fruition in the near future.

I just replaced my 2009 mac pro with a hybrid windows laptop. It has a detachable screen and I can use full graphic apps with a stylus, or just use it as a standard laptop. Windows 10 is really smooth. Unless Apple innovate, I won’t be going back for a while.

Well give it a shot if you’re interested. You never know till you try. I was given one on a road trip for work once, although I insisted I could work just fine from my iPad (a couple years later, I do all my work from my iPad) and it wasn’t a great experience. Okay laptop, crappy tablet. You’re right though, I appreciate Microsoft trying to do something different. I just personally don’t see the value yet. Is this thing supposed to replace my iPhone?

That's pretty neat. I'm not sure I need foldability that badly, but I like that it exists.
Flip phone - the next generation. It really does sort of look like a horizontal version of the flip phones from 15 years ago.

I'm just wondering why get a tablet at all if you need mouse support?
This is one reason the tablet has not yet supplanted the laptop/desktop for doing workhorse production tasks. No one has come up with good substitutes, as yet, for the mouse and keyboard combination. Tablets remain great end user devices for content delivery.

I may give it a try alongside my Mac, it’s not like I’m abandoning the Mac I still really like my Apple devices. if the Surface Pro or Surface Book 2 comes with a 14 day money back guarantee there’s nothing to lose really.

I really do wish MS could get things together, This Duopoly stinks a bit and MS isn't all that incapable at good UI and Hardware.

However I think a basic phone/mobile device is FIRST port of call! NOT some BS dual screen half and half, convertible shill capable of neither running mobile apps correctly or desktop apps sufficiently. Shoot me down if I'm wrong.

The surface book for example could be an amazing laptop but is made a much worse laptop and tablet by trying to be both, an unbalanced screen with wobble, restrictive hinge and overpriced mechanism with a weird gap/tilt that makes it look super derpy to boot!

MS, please make a phone with dual boot or options for android and windows. Make it great with hardware etc and please don't brand it MS and you'll be off! This dual screen will be a waste of money on R&D with almost no sales I guarantee. At least if you do a mobile then you can progress forward to this device with market share. The reason Nokia failed was it's design wasn't up to it and you forced a borked mobile version of windows with zero app developer support. Nokia had a great name but only with old style phones and had a hard time using plastic that felt cheap.

Microsoft Courier 2.0.
Yep, SOUNDS like Microsoft Courier 2.0.

Why not announce when ready? It's the equivalent of Apple announcing their car, now. The tech press need to up their game. Oh yeah, forgot, the tech press cares little beyond clicks and ad impressions. A point against MR for not mentioning Courier.
This is classic FUD: Microsoft style. When the competition is moving forward and you don't have something to counter it, you ANNOUNCE something in the works that is "new and disruptive". This introduces fear, uncertainty, and doubt in the minds of potential customers and investors about buying and investing what is here and now. The goal, get them to hold off and wait.

And why are Microsoft using this wallpaper? It's so close to the wallpaper Apple included with and used heavily in the marketing of iOS 9: http://i.imgur.com/swl1WmC.png
Keep in mind that the mockups are NOT from Microsoft but from some "kid" in Austria. (I say "kid" not as an insult, but because I'm an old fogey and everyone is a kid to me) That is if the info on David Breyer's Twitter is correct.

Regarding this dual screen pocketable device, take a look at the current Lenovo Yoga Book (Android or Windows), replace the Halo keyboard/Wacom tablet with a 2nd screen, shrink the bezels, shrink the screens down to 8". That's what I think this new Surface device will be. Lenovo already announced a Yoga Book 2 that is supposed to have a 2nd screen.

I have the Android version of the Yoga Book. I think it is terrific. A few tweaks (like a 2nd screen) would make it a game changer (for me anyways).

From the conspiracy dept.: This might help explain why Apple is keeping the iPad Mini around. If they heard through the grapevine that someone was going to do something with a similar form-factor, they have the capacity to keep the Mini production going so if they wanted to upgrade it and put out a Mini Pro, they could do it easily. (it's an off-the-cuff thought, not really a seriously considered opinion. :) )

That’s the beauty of not being dependent on hardware sales. You are free to churn out all manner of oddball products without having to worry or be held accountable for poor sales. And the press will lap it up and call them innovative.

You do realize the tech press broke this story? And that Microsoft hasn't announced this product? And that the "wallpaper" was from a rendering?

Read the article: They have NOT announced it. It's a RUMOR posted by The Verge, based upon a SUPPOSEDLY LEAKED INTERNAL eMail. With some CONCEPT art that you see above. Just like what this very website called MacRumors is doing for a living...

Blue Screen of Death in your pocket!

The 1990s called, they want their Windows 95 cynicism back. I've seen much more Apple Gray Screens Of Death and Linux kernel panics in the last decade than I've seen blue screens of death -- Windows has become an extremely stable platform; to a point where I'd say it is even more robust than Linux and macOS combined.

As if ANYBODY actually uses or needs more than a web browser and the few standard apps (music player, camera, contacts, phone, alarm clock, calendar) on these mobile things anyway... And I'm pretty sure that the office suite will certainly be shipped with that device (or at least be available for it) when it's ready.

With the trend in software development, mobile apps are nothing else but web applications in containers anyway. So I doubt that there will be a shortage of software for this gadget.

Yeah sure, but Microsoft didn’t do anything yet, and probably won’t. It’s just a patent and Apple has tons of these too, just that “MacRumors” doesnt care (read Pattently Apple for example).

Sure being “innovative” is not using the latest ports and releasing a GIGANTIC dongle with a single USB-C port for $80.
