I bought a Surface Pro and an Asus Tab and the 16x9 was a dealbreaker on both. It is just absolutely awful to hold. No wonder they need a kickstand.

The one thing I got from the ad is that the iPad bezel is WAY TOO DAMN BIG. Jesus. I never realized that before.

companies like MS and Nokia used to lead their markets for years

now they fell from the top and are no longer leaders but (bad) followers

now that they are running out of innovation, their only weapon is to create anti-apple campaigns, how pathetic

So far all I've seen is they reskinned iOS 6 to make it look like a Care Bear threw up on it and then they blew their own horn about how they redesigned the Mac Pro to look like a trash can.

I don't see companies copying either of these.

Advertising normally goes after the leader...

MS further complicates things by having a different OS, Windows Mobile, for smartphones. So that's two OS's for arguably similar products using the same ARM architecture. That just seems crazy.

WinRT is different enough fro WinPRT in terms of what you can do to warrant its own product. It is mostly API level things, I think.

Comes with Office. Game Over

Microsoft's latest Surface RT Vs. iPad commercial is a joke.

Comparing the iPad with no keyboard, against the Surface RT with integrated kickstand and keyboard- the iPad falls over whilst the Surface user is shown typing away and thanks to the kickstand the Surface remains upright.

The funny thing is at the foot of the video, in the tiniest font and the lightest of grey's , is the disclaimer "keyboard cover sold separately"

So the assertion "integrated kickstand and keyboard" is demonstrably false. And unless the user opts to purchase the optional cover his typing experience will be no better than that of the product you're mocking! They also don't factor the cost of the keyboard cover in the price analysis.

The iPad user shown tapping at a document header and nothing happening, taps it again and nothing. Doesn't come with Office. The Surface RT does. Well that's it I'm sold- no more tapping on documents that can't be edited. Obviously only Office can create/edit documents. It's not like iOS hasn't got Pages or other word processing apps. Heck it's even got Word through the CloudOn app.

And the Surface RT has a full sized USB port built in, the iPad they report "separate adapters required". Well only one adapter is required, the camera connection kit, if the iPad is to replicate the full sized USB port. The SD card adapter from the C.C.K is handy but it isn't necessary.

It's a strange ad campaign Microsoft are running. The points they've highlighted show a lot about how they see the tablet market. Overwhelmingly consumers are choosing tablets for fun- to relax with, to consume media, to play games, to take, organise, edit and share photographs, to surf the web etc.
Whereas Microsoft think what the consumer wants is the ability to run Office. To edit Office documents. Had a hard week at work? Why not escape the drudge of work at the weekend, by editing all those Word documents you didn't get round to finishing at work! You can multi-task. 2 apps side-by-side, at the same time. Why don't you, whilst editing work at home, Skype the kids telling them the reason they're not going to the zoo is because daddy has loads of work to finish!

A) Exactly, buy something extra.

So? My camera doesn't take SD cards, it uses CF so I'm buying something extra. And it really doesn't bother me to "buy something extra" when the benefits are seamless file syncing of RAW files when I am away. I don't take my laptop any more, just the iPad.

B) And if I want more than just images? Can I have a spread of PDF, images, music, and movies on my 64 gigabyte micro SD card and easily move them all over without having to he a third party app?
Don't know and don't care. I can e-mail what I need or put them on before hand. If you have a VPN connection you can use a program like the mentioned File Browser to get at your data. I also use a lot of cloud services like Evernote so I can have my stuff instantly accessible rather than schlepping around another card/device/whatever.

You love Microsoft, and Microsoft loves you. You deserve each other, and I hope you'll grow old together. Meanwhile, my videos are transferred from my Mac, wirelessly if I want, or from the cloud. My photos magically turn up on all my devices. I add an appointment in my calendar on the Mac, or add a phone number in the address book, and it appears on the screen on the iPad. Without having to do anything.

That's the difference between a Windows user and a Mac / iPad user. The Windows user has to figure out how to do things. For the Mac / iPad user: It just happens!

Yeah okay, except that I was an OS X user from 10.1.2 to 10.7.0. Lion made me switch as I could not work with the autosave version control system that I could NOT turn off. Windows 7/8 has a very similar system, but it is off by default, so it was a really good alternative. The implementation of fullscreen apps and resize anywhere were also big turnoffs.

I've never found iCloud useful either. Photo Stream is very frustrating, ending up with things I would never want to upload or have on my laptop, there without any way of stopping it or filtering it. Conveniently, I hardly take any photos on my iPhone anymore, but it is quite a destructive feature for anyone that does, it just fills up the SSD with photos that no one has any interest in ... another feature OFF.

Music in the Cloud would just further lock one in to the ecosystem, as it is, the only limiting thing with my Surface RT is that I can't watch my iTunes movies on it ><. The DRMed music has all been burned and reripped; only a shame there is no video equivalent.

Yes, it is annoying being a discerning user of Apple products, rather than just following blindly :(. And to be clear, if they came out with a touchscreen OS X device that allowed boot camp, I would be all over it. But they won't. Maybe a touchscreen display with a coming soon Mac Pro, but that seems a trifle excessive lol.

Fanboy aside... thats pretty impressive. If Apple did that, you'd be lined up around the corner. The only turnout is the name Microsoft.

Not really, I loved the Mac vs PC ads, but they had humor and they weren't literal. But this ones is, and it ends up looking like a big lie because they are not being 100% fair.

M$ just cannot understand why iPad sell that well.

The fact is, MacBook are so expensive and not affordable for everyone. That's why Apple needs iOS to make their new mobile products far more affordable. Also iOS is very different from Mac and that's why people recognise iOS that much even if they don't recognise Mac.

Windows is a very different story. You can easily buy a Windows 8 laptop at around 2/3 the price of the Surface, and because it is a laptop, you get a full Windows with that price not a wannabe one. Thus what's the point of having Surface around while you can buy a cheaper laptop that allows you to do a lot more?

Android is the main one that M$ shall blame on, not iOS. Android can really imitate Windows in a mobile gadget and somehow better because there are more apps on Android. Thus I cannot understand why don't M$ make a Surface vs. Galaxy Tab Ad instead of this useless iPad Ad.

It's Android that killed Surface RT, not iPad.

And thus the iPad works perfectly for you.

It is almost like you chose the best tool for our personal needs.

Surface are for someone who hate laptop, iOS and Android. This is very complicated indeed and this is why not much people do.

It was not me who said it, it was someone else, I know bigfoot is awesome... so please read my comment again :)

Hehe, ok just making sure. While we are on the subject of commercials I think MS should consider doing some of those Bigfoot commercials, hilarious.

That's an easy one to answer. Companies are trying to copy the iPhone and iPad. Those are recent innovations. Rumor mills about Apple's newer innovations have spawned MS and Google to start making watches and possibly TVs.

What is a recent innovation that MS came up with that everyone cares about? If you say Kinect, that would be a stretch and that's about it.

iPad vs Surface

It's time for some innovation, the next level. The iPad has been out for years now and needs that "something extra", to make it more useful. The Surface is . . not innovative and seems old already. Apple has been slowing down with anything new. I hope commercials like these light a fire for something new.

Nobody's copying the iPhone and iPad anymore. Back when they blew open those markets everyone was, but since then, they've been all about incremental improvements. I'd make an exception for SIRI, which is a strong piece of AI, but since then, Google has managed to take their own version, stick it on dedicated chips and allow you to use it from across the room. With the 5S's leaked specs, the only thing remotely innovative about it is the biometric sensor and who knows if that'll be game changing.

Looking at the other 5S rumored features... Dual LED flash (something the 920 and 925 have and the 928, 1020, and the Honami have moved past). High speed video (something the Galaxy already had). Larger screen? Taken from Android.

In the tablet market, the Android OEM's pioneered the 7" space. Apple's best selling tablets are now 7"

Who's following who here?

People are fickle and just don't get it many times. A company yet alone a person can't just create new stuff every year. 2010 was the introduction of the iPad which is 3 years ago. Now they are looking at launching a new TV and possibly a watch. I say every three years and creating a new market segment is phenomenal and impressive given such a short time frame. Microsoft in contrast hasn't done anything innovative for like a decade, they just follow not lead the technology pack.
