So if you are paying for Microsoft Office 365, you download Office for Mac 2016, you quit your subscription, what happens?

Can you still use Office or does it stop working? Or does it work but you will not get any more security updates?

Again you can't find this answer anywhere on Microsoft's site.

Nothing would happen. You can run Mac 2016 no problem

Sorry about that, Microsoft has finally updated and has been clear about this, according to them at the end of your subscription term Microsoft Office will no longer be functional.

You can open and print your documents but you can't edit them or start any new documents.

Download your data off the server and edit / make new documents locally using office 2016.

edit - after preview is over buy a standalone license unless office 2016 will be subscription only like Adobe Photoshop

Quick question about saving a document locally

Quick question about saving a document locally.

When I go to save a document, by default it brings up the online save window. To save the document locally I must then click the 'on my mac' button and then chose the location to save. Is it possible to skip this extra step and have local save by default?

If it is not possible to do this, I will provide feedback to Microsoft.

Thanks

Is there any news on whether Microsoft will offer a standalone Office for Mac 2016 or Word for Mac 2016?

Is there a preferences option?

Nope. However I have discovered that if you save a document locally that the next time you open word and go to save it brings up the local save window instead of online.

Cool :D. Does office remember if you quit the app and reload?

Yes it remembers. I even tried logging out just in case.

My next question is whether it is possible to save locally and have it automatically save/backup to online?

Yesterday it was impossible to download anything from their server. Will try today.

EDIT: Same. Download starts normally at 10-20MB/s, then it just stops.

Ok, got it from unofficial magnet link mirror. The first impression - fonts are ridiculously small on MBA, just like with office 2011. Default zoom should be something like 130% to match office from bootcamp.

Installed OK, but has over-written Office 2011 despite the fact it states in the FAQs that it sits together with 2011.
Anyone else seen this?

I have some very specific questions about Excel 2016..hope someone can answer.

1. Can someone attest to this statement?

With Office 2011, many users were frustrated that the Mac shortcut keys were not the same as the Office for Windows shortcut keys, so Microsoft has made all Windows shortcuts available on the Mac.

I am a power Excel user and rely on keyboard shortcut all the time. How does it work in Excel 2016? I mean there is no ALT key on MAC. And CRTL key on PC and MAC means different things. Or can I just hook up a PC keyboard and it will work like on a PC?

2. Can you add quick access button to the toolbar? Previously not possible on Excel 2011.

I have downloaded and installed the preview and was very excited about the shortcut keys being mirrored, as the lack of the same keyboard shortcuts makes the Mac version of Excel almost unusable for me.

The good news is that ctrl and shift shortcuts now work as per the Windows version. So for example you can select a row with shift+space and the insert a new row by using ctrl+shift+'+'. You can also use ctrl+c to copy, whereas before you had to use the cmd key. So that is a change for the better for Windows users

However, having used it for a short time, I think that you and I are going to be out of luck in another department. My most used commands involve Alt key sequences, e.g. Alt-E-S-V for paste special values, or Alt-D-S for sort. From what I can tell so far these are still not possible. Pressing alt after copying a cell does nothing, and I've tried every other key combo that I can think of to see if there is an alternative. It's possible that they may add this functionality in a later build (some features are still missing and have messages saying that they are not included in this build) but I'm not going to get my hopes up.

Another missing feature at the moment is the ability to customise the Quick Access Toolbar, but there is an option that is greyed out in the menu bar, so this will hopefully be included in a later build.

Overall, this is a step in the right direction for power users coming from Windows to Mac, but unless they add the alt sequence shortcuts that we are used to in the Windows version I'll be sticking with Parallels and the Windows version on my Mac.

Applescript Support

I haven't tested if it all functions properly or not but so far the Applescript libraries seem to contain the suite of commands. This bodes well for scripting and automation.
