still got my newton [my first ever Apple device and it still works - dog slow though !] but the Palm and HP Ipaq were definitely better. It was the stylus input and poor interface that let those down and tried to replicate windows too much rather than create a tablet os properly.
I can safely say the iphone was a gamechanger in my eyes, but really was a development on palm and pocket pc [and a much much better development].

I am expecting the same to happen with AR.

Also had the original surface to get back on topic. I liked that device but also relies on the stylus too much.

I will always remain an ipad and laptop guy until Apple make the 2in1 version with detatchable screen. Still my dream device!

The real gamechanger was the Apple app store. The PocketPC relied on third party app stores to sell apps, used serial codes to register software, etc. What a PITA.

How’s you MBA behaving as a tablet?

I thought the SP would be a good choice as a 2in1. I had an iPad and a MBA at the time. There were some times (few not many)a tablet would be best due to the environment I was working it. But found I still needed to use the SP in laptop mode because as a tablet, it sucks. So if I was forced to use a laptop... might as well get a good one.

It doesn't surprise me one bit that Microsoft put out this really stupid ad. It's because Microsoft is do dumb they don't even realize they are being so counterproductive since iPads and Macs use Office 365. Telling people not to buy a Mac and not to buy an iPad is destroying their own Mac Office business. MS's CEO is pathetic at best. Obviously he can't force anyone to buy a Surface. 😂

I came across this a few weeks ago! My microphone stopped working on my gaming PC and I went through ALL of these different settings, just trying to find out what was wrong. After about 20 minutes of fiddling (I know, no time at all) I said screw it and went and bought a new headset assuming the old one (it was 6 years old..) had finally kicked the bucket.

Turns out during an update, MS turned on a security feature that only exists at the bottom of a specific settings pane (you legit have to scroll ALL the way down to get to it) to allow desktop applications to use your microphone. Apparently they decided (and I kind of get it) to separate the security between Tile Apps or Store Apps or whatever they call them now and Desktop Apps. What was frustrating was the Desktop Applications microphone setting was on but the Windows Store Apps microphone security setting was off.

So annoyed. Partially my own fault, I'll admit it. But it isn't like their various settings sections are...the most user friendly.
Did you return the headset is the question?

Its not slow at all. Like any hardware, the more you pay, the more performance you get.
iPad Pro 2020 all have an A12Z and same amount of RAM.

iPad Air 2020 has an A14 which is fast for something but not on others and has 2GB less RAM and costs a bit less.

M1 MBA 8/8 has the same Silicon specs as M1 MBP. Paying more for performance differs depending on Silicon and platforms. RAM performance similar to single or multi thread applications is dependable on tasks but general usage it won’t be noticeable by most.

That iPad will be bent after a drop like that. 😂
Surprising why the iPad Air 2020 was not used and instead the iPad Pro 2020, maybe the price shock even with the MagicKB cover would still make it a more competitive device compared to Surface i3.

I have a Surface Pro for 4 years. I think in theory the idea behind it is the future. On top of that it's well-designed, the kickstand is well-engineered, keyboard is good and overall the package looks great.

However once you start actually using it the shortcomings become apparent. Essentially it's an OS designed for cursor and keyboard input put inside a tablet. The best use case I found for a tablet mode is watching films and videos. With the keyboard detached it's quite a good experience if you don't have a bigger screen at hand.Otherwise it's not even very good for web browsing, let alone any even basic productivity (maybe except drawing if you're into that). Like even dragging and dropping files is next to impossible.

I hope that Apple or someone else will someday come up with a proper 2-in-1, where the experience in tablet and laptop mode is great and the transition between the two is seamless. It's mostly a software problem.

iPad is superior as a tablet in general, but I agree with the dongle part, it's absolutely atrocious that donglegate.

This is an exaggeration, people are using BT earphones more than likely some AirPods versions. About the only things I can think of connecting is a USB-C thumb drive, SD card and maybe HDMI. But I have not used an SD card and thumb drive in years and wireless display of need be.

Now if a future iOS included built-in support for ChromeCast then an AppleTV will not be needed or if AirPlay was released on AndroidOS officially.

Apple needs to build upon iPadOS, the hardware is solid. I believe MagicKB cover will incorporate a dock method for expandability. Just a guess.

Core i3 4GB. Yikes...
Even my extremely underpowered MacBook 2017 from a few years ago with Intel m3 (low power chip) is faster than this i3 which Microsoft is selling in a NEW Surface... because macOS is so efficient and optimised for Macbooks. Hardware and software optimisations really make all the difference in the world.

or a real file system...the "file" browser on iPad is a lame excuse. Functions as simple as drag and drop and copy and paste are tricky. I really do use my iPad Pro for almost everything. I recently got a gopro and figure I'd load the videos on there and play with them...what a nightmare. They wouldn't play smoothly off the SD card, so I tried to copy them to Files...they are 5 GB files and I didn't even get a progress meter. It was so clunky. I switched to my mac for that in a heartbeat. iOS has come a long way....still has a very long way to go to be a true desktop replacement

ultimate answer. Give me iOS when no magic keyboard attached, when I attach a magic keyboard give me MacOS. The hardware is there.
macOS combined with a slow interface is STILL a slow interface though. There’s nothing about macOS that would have made that problem go away. Anyway, if the file transfer from a device is slow, it’s not a limitation of the filesystem, it’s a limitation of the interface (macOS and iPadOS’s file systems are similar anyway).

I have colleagues on a Surface who are unhappy. Does drawing worse than ipad, and still not strong enough to handle a smooth Adobe workflow.

I wasn’t able to get a lag-free workflow when dongling my 2017 ipad and 2012 Mac Mini. I expect I might this month - new Mac Mini coming this week, waiting for the new iPad Pro to be announced. And my 2017 iPad is still working fine, it just has some screen cracks... and I rather replace now before it unexpectedly quits on me.

But the iPad does what I expect it to do. It is my everyday browser, and has replaced my Wacom. I do all of my illustration ok on it. Nothing beats Procreate there. I have the Mac for all other work. I wouldn’t be mad if Adobe got better on iPad. But I am fine spending some time at my desk occasionally.

Pretty sure only the i7 needs active cooling while i5 and i3 are passive cooling.
The i5 does have active cooling using a fan for the GPU.

Surface pro 7 with intel i3 is not Superior than ipad pro, ipad pro is easy more easy to use and more powerful, even ipad display is better, they should have compared intel i7 version with ipad pro

They're right too. I'd go even further and say the Surface Go is a far better device than the iPad Pro simply by virtue of having a desktop OS rather than a toy OS so if you only buy one device, the Surface is a much better choice.
Except for gaming. If you try to run any game at all on the Surface Pro, the device will immediately become hotter than the sun even if it's a device with a fan (which will make a sound like an industrial strength vacuum cleaner in its futile attempt to cool the processor). Unlike an M1 Mac which will happily run Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign on one screen and Tomb Raider on another and won't even get warm to the touch.
There may be more games available on the Surface, but you can't run them without the machine getting unacceptably hot.
