What are they going to do, go to OSX or Linux? Who cares if it pisses them off? I don't think it will, by the way.

My SP3 seems to run things (Adobe and Autodesk creative suites) pretty smoothly. And it's nice being able to just hand off files back and forth between it and my workstation. That's the biggest obstacle I see for the Ipad Pro.

And Windows is fine. That argument is tired.
Yes window from 2 to 2 years deliver a good os
Win xp was fine, vista not. Win 7 was fine , win 8 was not. Win 10 is fine, next year..

I won't choose a Microsoft product, but this is a really good lesson for Apple to learn: while Apple is crazy imagining how to sell absurd new iToys, Microsoft comes and releases a product with the specs Apple should provide:

16GB RAM in a light laptop
NVIDIA GPU: yes, Apple learn this: use good GPUs, not the Intel thingies please.
A current CPU. Not a previous generation, but a current one: Apple learn this please.

Now you look at the Retina MacBook: 8GB RAM (yawn) Old CPU (yawn) Intel graphics (more yawn)... "but hey, you can buy an Apple Watch if you want fun".

I think we have to agree that our personal preferences are quite different. I have used OS X daily (well, weekdays at work) since it was launched and it really doesn't do anything for me that Windows can't do.
Yes osx doesnt need a fresh install after 1 year of real work

it's not though. a lot of the major 'pro' apps have tablet modes now.
like it or not, for 'pros', the full app with tablet mode beats scaled down tablet apps.

how nice would it be to work on lightroom and photoshop on your tablet, with the tablet form factor....not lightroom tablet edition...but lightroom.

that's the advantage.

if you were a pro, why waste time on the scaled down versions of apps.
Bec of the gpu that hybrides had
You need a proper desktop class gpu for desktop class prof app

All of a sudden now you want windows pc laptops in this case to be priced at a premium?
I don't want to burst your bubble, but premium laptops running Windows have been available for many years. You don't see them out and about that often as personal computers (personally owned, that is), because it makes little sense for most people to pay a lot more for what is primarily a more stylish case and a moderate increase in performance and portability.

I've had my SP3 since launch day. I have never had to do a fresh install. It was my primary work machine until last month. My son has had a SP2 since launch day. It hasn't needed a fresh install of anything. Windows has come a long way since Vista.

We will be talking smooth after 1 more year and tell us how windows 11 will work after months of mess up the registry

So your retort is a hypothetical about a year from now? The jump from 8.1 to 10 was fine. That's also assuming I need to upgrade to Win11 to begin with.

This will probably (my guess) work like the Battery Cover for SP 1 and SP 2 - which housed a battery in the keyboard. It charges the internal battery of the tablet first, and then charges the external battery. It draws power from the external battery first, and then the internal battery when no AC is present.
Ok so how will I know if the game I'm playing will lag or not due to the battery status of the base considering the gpu placement. I think it is a little more complicated than just keyboard management of sp1&2

don't think you understand how enterprise DSU's work. They are notoriously slow movers - with majority of large corps still stuck in the XP and Win7 world. The Surface Book has not been created for enterprise users in mind, they are targeting education, creative and personal computing - which is a more comparable space to Mac users.

Surface is for everyone. It's who Microsoft are pitching it all.

And just because many enterprises are dragging their feet doesn't mean it's acceptable for OEM's to keep selling them crap. Many still sell machine's marketed as premium with 1366x768 screens for goodness sake!

This thing looks really good.
If it had the apple logo some would be running their asses off to get in line and be the first to buy.
The thing that looks good is the solution to attach the keyboard, really cool. And the keyboard looks solid and no some detachable piece of plastic of unknown purpose... :(
Well done microsoft, if this is their first ...let's see the next iteration. Promising stuff
The prices I find really steep...

no no i'm not saying that this thing would be a pro's only workstation.

all i'm saying is its a more capable device than ipad pro, as a secondary work machine, because it can have the full desktop app on there. vs a mini tablet version

Another interesting tidbit.

From a pricing perspective, a 512 i7 rMBP with a dGPU will cost $3039 in CAD dollars.

The MS SB is priced at a cool $3499 CAD for an i7 with dGPU and 500 GB of SSD storage.

Looks like the extra $400 is for the 6th gen processor + touch ability.

if Apple does match the CPU in terms of 6th gen skylake and keep the price point around the 3k - it will still be competitive enough without the gimmicky detachable touch screen.

One does feel we might be only a year away before apple comes out with their own OSX version of a hybrid.

Try balancing the Surface Pro/keyboard contraption on your lap while at a conference or presentation without tables, then you'll know why some people would prefer a hybrid that's more on the laptop side. ;)
For that you have macbook pro

Keep in mind that in order to get the dGraphics, you need to spend a minimum of $1900. A fact MS didn't mention in the presentation.
It isn't cheap, but then again I'm not sure Apple would charge less if it offered a upper-end 13-inch rMBP with dGPU (which it doesn't).

Well, the first question asked was about the battery :). Regarding GPU management and battery: I don't think it would be any different than computers like my Thinkpad or the Macbook Pro that have discrete graphics. And if it is anything like the Thinkpad I have - you can force the discrete GPU to always be on for certain programs.

Sry but in my company 2 employes bought for work an i5 for acad and others app and some install uninstall stress, and yea registry are a mess after 7 months
Maybe your work doesnt apply a lot of installs uninstalls

The phones will probably fail - not because they aren't good but because there are no apps for Windows Phone.

The laptops / tablets however: wow, holy crap. That's the first time ever Microsoft is actually releasing something drool worthy. The Surface Book is one of the most innovative devices I've ever seen - innovative in terms of Apple: analyse the market, check what's already around and make it way better. I'm not worried about Windows 10, either - I've had to work with it for a while now (home machines are all Macs, but at work they've already upgraded to Windows 10) and am happy with it. It's as good as OS X. Time will tell whether it holds up or whether things start falling apart after a few months of usage, but right now, I really don't have anything to complain about.

Overall, I think it's great that Apple is finally getting some serious competition in the Laptop market - so far, they've been so far ahead of everyone else, that they were in danger of becoming complacent.

The glance screen is a brilliant system that Apple should have adopted years ago.

The current iOS home screen is so dysfunctional . All it's good for is displaying photos of your girlfriend/boyfriend/dog or fat kids.

Whoa!

you are all hype because the event is still in your hearts and that guy knows to deliver the hype. These are great products for those who want something different, but in 1 month when the hype is gone, these product will not be mainstream.
These products will be bought in general by the kids or people who wants something just because is cool
These are not for real pro users, these are not for gamers. These are for normal users with normal usage, cut in half because not everybody will pay 2000$ and we have the sell numbers

If the power of the tablet is enough for both cpu and gpu yes you are right. Now I think again.. it has to be like that otherwise it would not be a competing product. I don't know why I was under the impression that the base needed to be powered to use the gpu. Who wants to lag when killing Diablo :)

Keep in mind that the only reason they are able to innovate in this space is their software... without the hybrid nature of win8.1 and win10 these devices wouldn't exist.

Apple are kind of stuck with what they have because OSX, in its current state, lacks the flexibility to support such devices..

Microsoft has sparked my interest.

I still believe in Apple's stance that iOS and OSX provide the best experience for completely different usages. However, I believe Microsoft is closing the gap quickly! This is the best hybrid approach we've seen, I'm excited to try this out at the Microsoft store.

Excellent job Microsoft! Let's hope the real world usage lives up to the value proposition.
