If I understood correctly, it is compatible with SP3. At least that's what they told today.
The store.microsoft.com page for the accessories do report it as being compatible with the SP3. Once they're in stock, I'll pop over to my local MS store and see if its there's enough improvement to justify the expense.

Risky move by Microsoft. They're betting that hardware will be enough to keep users on Windows, or convert Mac users. The risk is if this doesn't convert any Mac users, they will be alienating a lot of notebook OEMs at the same time. Don't know who's making this for them, but they're gonna be pissing off Dell, HP, ASUS, Lenovo, Acer, etc, etc. Will be interesting to see how they respond if they feel like Microsoft is throwing them under the bus.

I see a lot of people here giving Microsoft a lot of flack but here's my take on it.

Microsoft has demonstrated with their Surface line that they LISTEN to their costumer feedback. With every generation Surface Pro they've implemented the feedback they have gotten from their costumers.

For a First Generation product... The Surface Book is just fine.

Contrast that with Apple Fans asking for a Retina MacBook Air and getting the Retina MacBook. Or Apple fans asking for a OS X iPad and getting the iPad Pro (which copies the Surface Pro).

I for one am excited for Microsoft and I can see they are working hard and they have fire and they have passion.
As opposed to Apple who is way too comfortable joking around making fun of everybody and not delivering.

The way I see it. Microsoft only needs the full force of developers backing them.

If they can arrange that and bring the Windows App Store on a comparable level to Apple's.

They might just win this war (seeing as they have Enterprise).

Either way, no matter which side you're on, there's exciting times ahead.

Surface book is for what users?
who want a laptop? they will buy a macbook pro or for gaming alienware!
for tablet? they will buy an ipad
for a hybrid? they will buy a surface pro 4

Not that I've tried Windows 10, but I have a feeling that I wouldn't like it as much as OS X.. But the Surface Book sure makes me want to try it. It seems like a fantastic piece of hardware.

I know people have make the previous Surfaces run OS X as hackintoshes, if anyone will put together a bunch of drivers and such for OS X for this baby I'll get one in a heartbeat. Having used a hackintosh for a while now (rock stable) it seems like a viable option.

If the app situation was better I would sell my 6S, Air 2 and Apple TV 4 today for a surface, MS phone and Xbox One.

I think you have to give Microsoft credit for innovation here. High performance and MULTI-PURPOSE device housed in only 7.7mm with an attachable and highly functional keyboard with the benefit of discreet GPU support with an extra battery and, omg, external port options.

Anybody that thinks the iPad Pro is a better professional tool is just not a real professional.
who is a professional person, will not buy this.
for prof editing video etc you buy a mac pro with proper Ram CPU and GPU
This is a device for those who just want all its new and fresh and for those who can use it for light to medium work

the problem with listening to customers is that most of these customers are just dorky spec chasers really. I've read one person respond why couldn't they include a usb 3.1 spec...rolling my eyes. Most of these "wants" is just more hardware and more hardware. on the other hand apple doesn't listen to its customers and keeps releasing sub par products that do only one thing great - entertain. I'd love for an iPad that can be iOS when undocked, but when docked become full OSX. Thrywon't do this because they need to get paid fat. Money is #1 concern for apple these days - just look at the iPhone 6S/+ new 12MP sensor but same optics. They will trickle new features saving it for you to upgrade every year.

It's delivering just as much Microsoft is light years ahead of Apple hyperbole. If Apple developed a laptop with s hinge like that the mockery here would be massive.

But on the sunny side then you'd ride in, on a virtual mighty steed, to defend Apple's honour; like a maiden in distress.
Does being an irreconcilable Apple apologist automatically negate the ability to acknowledge a competitor's innovation or is there a conscious "switch" that needs to be engaged?

Will the phone replace the laptop?
Boy I don't know. 5 years ago I needed some computing muscle. These days I don't do much but MS Office, watching videos and typical web browsing. Right now I have a 10" Surface tablet docked to two 27" monitors, a 32" TV via HDMI, 2 keyboards, mouse, Bose speakers, Seagate drives and who knows what else. I don't really know why either. It's just cool watching all this crap I don't use anymore come to life when I "snap" the tablet into place. :)

Will a phone with these functions do the same one day? I'm betting soon. I can't help but wonder what Apple's A9 chip could do if Apple had the same goal as MS. (A single OS layer).

The major deal breaker is that it runs Windows :(

Comments like these really puzzle me.

I have used Macs more or less every single day at work since 1998 - that is 2-3 years before OS X appeared btw. As a result of this I have probably spent more hours in front of a Mac the last 15+ years than on a Windows based PC. And I have never ever even considered getting a Mac as my home computer. Why people think OS X is in any way better than any of the Windows versions available at the same points in time is really one of the big mysteries to me.

Apple is trying to hard in making the iPad something it's not. They need to move forward and make a real tablet with OS X.. Windows 10 is pretty nice and the surface pro 4 looks amazing. It's everything I want in a tablet. I never thought I would go back to Microsoft but they seem to be the only ones innovating.

The problem is that with the $1499 you get 8GB ram, i5 processor, 128GB ram. But it runs windows. And just not good enough with the nature of x86 computing with those specs using windows.

That's more than enough. These days, Windows is lighter and thinner on resources than even OSX without having to sacrifice any performance. One of the advantages of MS trying to cram Windows onto a tablet is that they've tweaked the everliving hell out of it. OSX still beats it on battery life, but Windows is now lighter on its feet.

I got hit with some malware AND virus at the same time. Let me tell you if not for a complete image of stock windows installation to restore, i'd waste probably a crap load of time trying to figure out how to clean the system. windows protect couldn't even detect the problem.

Having been a windows user since windows 3.1 days, i'm telling you OS X is a fine OS and in many ways better than windows. It's a personal preference I'm willing to bet my wallet on.

Apple is trying to hard in making the iPad something it's not.

MS tried he same thing with Windows RT/MS Surface. Once they realized that people did not want the RT version of windows and in fact were often confused as why it couldn't run their apps, they changed course and the SP3 was a hit (for a number of reasons).

Don't know who's making this for them, but they're gonna be pissing off Dell, HP, ASUS, Lenovo, Acer, etc, etc. .

What are they going to do, go to OSX or Linux? Who cares if it pisses them off? I don't think it will, by the way.

Here's the confusing delimma:
But it runs windows. And just not good enough with the nature of x86 computing with those specs using windows.

My SP3 seems to run things (Adobe and Autodesk creative suites) pretty smoothly. And it's nice being able to just hand off files back and forth between it and my workstation. That's the biggest obstacle I see for the Ipad Pro.

And Windows is fine. That argument is tired.

The guy introducing the pen is like a dodgy geezer from the market trying to offload some crappy electronics. Very strange. Might try this out, but didn't like the surface 3 so not holding out too much hope.

I think we have to agree that our personal preferences are quite different. I have used OS X daily (well, weekdays at work) since it was launched and it really doesn't do anything for me that Windows can't do.

Microsoft do not really need to worry about Mac users. PC's dominate globally, especially in the enterprise.

And who cars about the OEM's? They've been holding back on hardware for years & given users tiny incremental updates with new models. Surface brand is forcing OEM's to up their game. And what are the pissed off OEM's going to do if they don't make PC's? Make unprofitable ChromeBooks? Ha!
