I’m not sure I’ve ever seen the phase “up to” so many times in one article.

I know the marketing folks have figured out that people just read over that bit, but what the phase “up to” really means is “almost certainly worse than”.

It could be ten times as 'powerful', whatever that means when comparing two completely different OSes--I still have no desire to use Windows.

I like how everyone defending Windows here completely ignores crap like this:

BSOD (every 1-2 weeks)
DLLs and the ridiculous way that every app barfs files all over the Windows directory
Registry (see DLLs)
Fingerprint sensing is a joke compared to TouchID
Power management...doesn't seem to matter what I set it to, it switches things around on a whim
Ads/spyware
Backup options are ridiculous compared to Time Machine
Lack of continuity features with phones, messages, etc.
"Windows rot" that slows everything down over time
Antivirus...'nuff said
Deceptive update process
Edge

I use Windows on a loaded ThinkPad every day and find it to be exactly as bad as it's always been. It reminds me of Android OS--it feels like you could use it to launch the space shuttle, but it's completely unfulfilling and complicated to use in virtually every way. It's bloated, it's inconsistent, and I take no pleasure in using it.

Windows vs macOS is like somebody offering me a new Buick to replace my BMW. If I had never tried anything else, I'm sure I'd think it was great, but...I have, and it's not.

That's the flipside of having to use Windows (or other alternatives) when Apple let's their hardware go to DOODOO, and still charges you an arm and leg for it.

It's the same with iOS: the software is not bad but I need more from it and especially from the hardware.

My dreams:

A. A customizable, configurable Mac desktop (i.e. a modern pre-2013 Mac Pro)
B. A non-soldered Mac laptop with powerful GPUs, no need for dongles of any kind, upgradeable drives, and a 17" screen (i.e. a modern 17" MBP like the 2011 I own).

Real-world options today:
A. Hackintosh. That's it.
B. Leave the Mac platform completely and go Razer Blade Pro. That's it. Which kinda negates item A.

I hate to have to deal with all you mention, but Apple is really leaving me with no choice here, just like they did with iOS, which is why I use a Note8 now. Not as nice (OS-wise), but way, WAY more capable. I need to be able to launch that shuttle.

Work laptop? By chance ?

Cause I have a work MacBook Pro, and frankly I could write a rant like that .... beachball hell....

Now at home .

My MacBook Pro and windows desktop are just as smooth as each other. Set it up correctly and it's a good experience.

On the flip side , iOS is a dog breakfast two updates into a hardware while macOS tends to run as well if not better two updates in. iOS is like the windows of phone OS..... sorry it's not all rosey

But you still have to run a dogs breakfast of an OS on it.

Well, yeah, that used to make a huge difference, but what we have now is Windows (dog's breakfast) vs. Mac OS (dog's breakfast with an after-breakfast mint).

Seriously, the difference in usability has effectively vanished over the past 5 or so years, not because Microsoft managed to do anything better after Win 7 (Win 10 isn't as nice as 7 in many ways), but because Apple's UI design, readability, consistency, feature-set, and usability have suffered so greatly during that same time.

There was a time not long back when using a Mac was, mostly, a joy, and when using Windows was stressful; a continuous struggle, even a fight, just to get the software to do what you wanted it to do. This difference is what set the Mac apart. Today using a Mac feels almost exactly like using a Windows machine.

It's not hard for Microsoft to look good when the only real competition gleefully fell on their own sword...

I'm convinced most haven't even touched it.

So headache after headache from previous windows versions I decided to update to Windows 10 on a laptop I have.

The bottom bar wouldn't show up. There was no human power to make it appear. Had to reinstall windows all over again. And that's what people call stable...

No thanks, never had an issue with my Mac.

I assume you still have to buy, and then run/update anti-virus constantly...that will never change, but at least that slowdown and inconvenience comes FREE with any Windows product!

Its quite possible that it can run OS X, as well. The hackintosh world is alive and strong, so its quite possible that you'd be able to install OS X on the machine.

Why would you? Unless Apple makes a touch GUI in Mac OS I do not see the point. I would rather use vanila windows than a gimp Mac OS (lack of touch). My last windows PC had Windows XP, and have no intentions of going back to windows any time soon. That being said, I would never think of Installing Mac OS on a touch Tablet as that would be inferior to windows.

Spot on. How true it is.

Many free AV programs out there, one of which is Windows Defender and is recommended by many folks. People keep mentioning "Windows rot" and slowdown but I just never see that issue.

Very impressive until you switch it on and it’s the same old Windows OS that hasn’t really changed for years.

Twice as powerful? Really don’t see how that is possible. Seems like they are comparing their top end Surface 15” to the entry level 13” MBP. That, to me, seems to have gone over the line in terms of deceptive advertising.

Also can’t wait to see battery life tests. Somehow I don’t think it will do that well under load.

I also note they talk about the “latest MBP” but have a picture of one from three generations ago.
*edit: um wow. Looking again that is the 2012 Model. WTF?

Oh Microsoft. *rollseyes

GPU-wise, the 15" Surface Book is probably way more powerful than anything in the MacBook lineup, though.

Looks to me like the same price as their MBP counterparts. Does that mean we can stop bitching about Apple's prices being too high?

If Microsoft makes this a stable product, this would definitely warrant the price over the MacBook Pro, especially the 15".

For same money I'll get a significantly faster GPU, with a nice touch screen that will actually be usable and not just a gimmick, since it can be used in a drawing configuration. I'd take that over a touch bar and that mediocre AMD GPU any day.

You don’t have to buy, many are free. Runs in the background, including updates, and you can pretty much ignore it.

Funny - some of what you refer to is hardware, not windows itself.

And? By virtue of that response, it's clear that you don't understand the problem.

The paint chips off your brand new car and you take it back to the dealer. "Sorry, sir, that's a DuPont issue. Nothing to do with Ford..."

Viruses are much overblown on these forums.

Ads / spyware - not really an issue. Again overblown.

You can get perfectly good anti malware apps for free.

ROFLMAO. Head down to the IT department and ask if they're cool if you run Windows without any virus protection.

"Overblown" = "it exists in a hugely larger capacity in Windows than in macOS"

Microsoft is adding continuity to windows 10 for android. Mac OS only supports iOS.

All I need macOS to support is iOS, but how is that worse than the (nonexistent) Windows continuity features only working with Android?

If Windows had continuity features, I wouldn't have put it on the list...just like if my work laptop hadn't *just* BSODed, it wouldn't be on the list, either. But neither of those statements are true, so there they are.

A lot of negativity in here (not surprising, given that it's an Apple community), but I think this sounds like a pretty solid update. I absolutely LOVE their inclusion of a GTX 1060 GPU, and hope it inspires Apple to step their game up in that area.

Apple's displays are top notch when it comes to picture quality, and I'd be surprised if Surface Book 2's display is on the same level. To me, that alone is a major reason to prefer Apple laptops over the competition.

I think Windows' flaws are being overstated in this thread. Even though I prefer macOS, my experience with Windows 10 suggests nothing short of a solid and full-featured operating system. My biggest gripe with W10 is how much Microsoft spies on you (Apple does too, but not as badly in most cases).
