I’d buy an iPad because it’s the right hardware and software. I wouldn’t buy a surface because although it’s the right hardware, it’s the wrong software (microsoft desperately needs a windows mobile to compete with ipados and ios).
What makes iPadOS the right software for a laptop competitor?

I can live with the AppStore. But it needs a file system that can be used by all programmes.

Don't get me wrong. The iPad is nice as a couch device. But I can't replace my laptop with it.
With Windows I could.

Everyone pile on Adobe to port their apps to Linux and then Windows dies a glorious death. Apps are key.

It won’t make a difference to Apple’s base because we already have a Unix inside the best designed hardware eco system.
Adobe has 23 million subscribers(and they are not all on Windows).
You can even double that and its still irrelevant for the total Windows users.
Windows is also used on well over 90% of business computers, schools etc.

Apps are key indeed and Windows has a ridiculous dominance in this area, not just because it's compatible with almost any computer application but because of it's legacy support and it's ability to run old apps which is very very important, especially in the business sector.

It's silly of Apple to restart the whole speed comparison marketing approach. They should be pushing the experience of Mac OS not who has the best benchmarks. These new computers are so fast now for most needs that it becomes meaningless. Even Apples M1 is still good enough for most people. IF you are a gamer or a 3D artist then maybe benchmarks are important to you. I have an M2 MacBook Air 15inch and came from a 2015 iMac. Everything launches instantly. I feel no lag doing all the tasks I do day in day out ( O365, Adobe Creative Suite ) and I cannot make a dent in my battery life. If I had an M3, M4 etc I don't know if I would notice the difference.
Well what sort of experience is apple software giving? Buggy AF, irritating. That's definitely not their strong selling point

You know you’re in trouble if Microsoft is out innovating you. Microsoft! This is how far Apple has fallen. I don’t mean the faster chip (or not). It’s how quickly Microsoft seized the Ai opportunity and ran away with it. Ai should be the new Internet moment for every tech company. By all account Apple has fallen by the wayside.

WoA is interesting me. I’m agnostic. Surface Pro 7, M1 MBA. iPad Air M1. I like and use them all.

99% of us have enough compute power. I am in that group.

Battery life. Compatibility. Does what I want. Form factor. My Surface is coming up 5, I could be tempted here, when the price is right of course. I don’t need to replace my Intel PC but I like this new lean towards ARM.

Intel is going to have a rough time of it.

Just like in the 90's, Apple was 5 years ahead and then spent the next 5 years chasing failed projects like Apple TV+, Apple Vision Pro, etc., and let the competition catch up. History repeats itself.
Not sure what you are talking about, Apple TV+ has been a success both financially and in terms of quality content. Similarly the Apple Vision Pro for first launch product has been very successful proving the concept, gathering attention and pushing the technology further.

Finally! Seems Intel CPUs have no place in the laptop market!!!.
A windows laptop whose battery lasts 22 hours!, that is something that I really need to see!

The iPad isn’t supposed to replace your laptop.

If you haven't run Windows on ARM on an M series macbook i'd seriously suggest givin git a shot. In Parallels it runs as well as native on say, an 11th gen powered Dell Latitude 13" in my experience. If not better.

You know it’s time to throw specs in your ads when you know that after all those years the user experience of the Microsoft software still sucks. Steve’s ‘it just works’ still applies today for Apple (only).

This would be great. I'm a die hard Apple fan, but I still have to use windows at work. And my current Dell laptop is a mess, it has like 3h of battery, is heavier than the MBP, and the fan is constantly on. If I could have a sweet Surface laptop in a few years, with battery and performance like an MBA, I will be very very happy.

I'm sure it's been said here but I think this is funny; MS's Pro is faster than Apple's Air... does MS not realize that the Air is Apple's consumer line and not the...Pro line?
And the MacBook Air is a fan less design, bet these new devices sound like a plane taking off!

To think Siri was released with the iPhone 4S and they did nothing with it. They could have been so far ahead in the game and basically be a synonym of „AI computing“ but instead they are still figuring things out.

My Lenovo work laptop is great,ThinkPad L14 Gen 4
I can never hear the fan, 32GB, great keyboard, built like a tank, battery is like 6h but it doesn't matter as I almost never have to use it unplugged anyway.

Depending on where you live, you're paying up to $2 per day extra on energy costs alone over a Mac Studio and all the productivity apps you list above run faster on the Mac Studio, especially video encoding.

So you're really just paying a lot of money over each year just to game.

My electric bill is $50/month. Please. Lot of money....LOL. Oh, and my PC is on almost 12-15 hours a day.

And no, the Studio runs LR almost identically on each system. Glad you're here at my house to see for yourself trying to tell me they "run faster on the Mac Studio".

Count me in, unless Apple catches up in a big way, I'll still most likely go for this one because I need windows to run most of my apps anyway these days and my iMac 2017 is slow as hell for running games even WoW on low settings and Apple is just fn lazy to introduce a 27" with M-chips.
I'm also pleasantly surprised that Microsoft doesn't charge your wallet and right kidney for these amazing AI on-board features.
Having to run AI locally is very resource intensive and I constantly hit gpt4 limits, so this is very tempting.

As someone who has a foot in both camps there's nothing fundamentally wrong with either, there's nothing a Windows PC can do that a Mac can't do, and likewise there's nothing a Mac can do that a Windows PC can't do. Both are very capable operating systems and I've never had a problem with either. And you can get quality hardware for both platforms, it's just a case of personal preference.

Don't take their claims without asking why they compare a 10 core CPU against a last version 8 core CPU that is without a fan. This seems extremely cherry picked and should be pointed out in the article, as they should be compared with the M4 CPU's that are fan cooled.
