Still the most popular tablet. Having both however iPad beats sp4 in battery life and consumption. If you don't need windows, iOS is infinitely easier to use.
I can take a Surface into my office and use it for my work and also for my home use if I wanted to. The same cannot be said for an iPad. So of course it doesn't last as long. The iPad is a toy compared to the Surface. I can connect my iPad to a Surface to do a iTunes backup and even jailbreak it. Clearly shows which is the superior device. On Windows 10 Creators update I can set Windows 10 to never download any apps outside the store and turn on tablet mode and its just as simple to use as iPad. iP

Apple better hope Microsoft doesn't come out with a Surface Mini at a 9.7 inch size otherwise its game over for iPad. The main issue with the Surface is that its too big. They need to come out with a smaller form factor which is why I haven't bought one.

As far as popularity goes, Surface popularity is increasing ,the iPad sales are tanking. I don't understand why I should pay more for an iPad Pro which will likely get discontinued in 4 years while Surface Pro 4 wil last longer if I wanted it to thanks to Windows.

Just switched myself to a Surface from a 12.9 inch iPad Pro. Its a much better product. The iPad doesn't even hold a candle to it.
When using Windows it feels like I am not being restricted by anything. Downloads, file organisation, custom apps, desktop class applications. Its all there. On iOS when I receive an attachment in email I have to go through loops just to print it.If I receive a RAR file I have to open the file in Xender, extract it using Xender and then using open with option use Adobe reader to open it. There is no way to download custom file formats. SO much for simplicity

You like a Windows 10 desktop / laptop environment packaged in tablet form. Therefore a Surface is great for you. That doesn't deligatimize the iPad. I have to deal with Windows 10 and all of the crap that comes with it while I'm at work. When I get home and switch from a work environment to a home user environment I neither need nor want to deal with a Windows based device. I want an iOS device with a larger screen that offers some more advanced features for the occasional time I need to use them. Therefore the iPad Pro is perfect for users like me. I don't get the constant need to denegrate one type of device that is clearly aimed at one use case over another device that is clearly aimed at a different use case. You like your Surface. That's nice. I like my iPad. No need to get into a *** measuring contest over it.

Not surprised for an 'all in one' device the Surface Pro's are hard to beat, my SP2 is still going strong.

Mac and Windows aren't going anywhere if that's what you are implying. I think the nosediving iPad sales prove that.
Nope, they prove that after just five generations the iPad was already well-developed enough, that buying a new one every year wasn't necessary anymore. And they prove that many people can live entirely on a bigger iPhone for their computing needs. PC sales are nosediving independently from what happens in the iPad market. If you care, there's a trucks-vs-cars analogy explaining the relationship between the old and new paradigm.

I'm pretty sure that's what the FS in APFS stands for ...

I'm pretty sure you know he means that the file system is not presented to the user in the way it is in OSX.
i.e. you cannot save files in folders that you have naming control over and then open said files in other apps by navigating the file system

I have lived long enough to see a Microsoft product actually better than an Apple product... by Apple user's confessions

AppleInsider has a much more thorough analysis of this report:

Curious J.D. Power report scores 2017 tablet makers by screen size, bundled apps, mouse support

A curious report from J.D. Power gave Microsoft's Surface brand a higher overall score in comparison to other tablet makers, "largely due to its top rankings in the features and styling & design factors," in particular the size of the screen.

Previous J.D. Power tablet rankings (specifically in 2012, 2013 and 2014) didn't appear to include any Surface devices, which are generally considered 2-in-1 hybrid laptops rather than tablets.

Well worth a read to see how other media are taking the report at face balue without analyzing what it actually says.

The sp4 only redeeming feature is it's form factor. Other than that I have my Windows 10 laptop with 4 usb ports and a slightly older Windows 7 laptop. When I need to business stuff, out comes Windows, after that, it gets put away.

What the ipad does better, it does much better. And I'm upgrading my ipad 2 with the ipads that were just announced. ipad also has better longevity than windows. My older windows 7 laptop runs current vmware software sub-optimally and it's the same age as my ipad. My ipad runs ios 9.3.5 without any issue.

- ipad is superior for consumption, netflix, showtime, hbo etc.
- ipad is superior in battery life
- ipad is easier to use

There will never be a surface pro mini, due to the heat generated by the intel chips, and battery life will be abysmal.

Surface popularity will continue to inch up, because it's expensive for what you get. I only bought it for convenience while travelling. I expect ipad sales to start to rocket upwards with these new models that were announced, while surface will keep inching up due to battery life and expense considerations.

Well duh!

The iPad after many years is still just a big iPhone!

Innovate the iOS then you'll have my $ Apple.

And are people really okay with the 4-5 hours of battery life with the Surface Pro? I guess I'm a sucker for convenience.

Having said that, I'm hoping iOS 11 improves iPad functionality.

By the way, the iPhone is just a small iPad! The MacBook Pro is just a big netbook. A bear is just a really, really big, wild dog! :)

Take away MS Office, would people still prefer a Surface?

I think MS have a good product and it's about choice which I'm all for.

Myself, still prefer the rMBP and iPad combo. Both good at what they are designed for.

Now that I have a notebook that supports 'airdrop', I'm even more impressed, and enamored with the Mac OS. It does things that are pretty amazing. It's Apple's ridiculous hardware constraints that piss me off!

Nope nope nope...

A bear is a totally different class of animal. That's like saying humans are related to all animals, kissing cousins of the porcupine. While that's true for *some* humans (most of which seem to be in politics), that is hopefully a short lived offshoot of humanity and evolution will take care of it. ;););)

I dont own a surface. In fact I own an iPad Pro and a iPad Air 2. But there is no question that if I wanted to get work done and not be limited by pointless niggles I approach my Windows PC. Surface is superior because of the OS. You cant download unrecognized file formats on iOS. Its impossible to set default apps on iOS. Its impossible to run full fledged desktop software on iOS. The desktop MS office on Mac and Windows wipes the floor with that app they have on iOS. On Windows if I wanted tablet oriented apps I can download Bluestacks and get touch optimised software and an entire Android ecosystem at my command in addition to all desktop apps. Surface has a file system. iOS does not

I use my devices for a lot of tasks and there is only 2 things the iPad is good for and thats playing games, watching movies and web browsing. Thats pretty much it and thats only because Surface doesnt come with a smaller form factor. If there is a smaller 9.7 Windows tablet with Surface level hardware quality I would dump iPad and go Windows.

Even the PC is developed enough. And in addition a PC can be upgraded regularly. I own a lot of PCs and the latest one is from 2013 which I keep upgrading for 4 years and a XPS from 2009 and both are on the latest 2016 class hardware. PCs last for almost 10 years so comparing them to tablets is not apples to apples. iPad Mini from 2011 is discontinued. My PC and Mac is still running strong.

And when you are able to run a full featured SAP Accounting package and Adobe Photoshop on iPhone and iPad, let me know

The sp4 only redeeming feature is it's form factor. Other than that I have my Windows 10 laptop with 4 usb ports and a slightly older Windows 7 laptop. When I need to business stuff, out comes Windows, after that, it gets put away.
Windows has more games than iOS. Windows has more flexibility in entertainment. The only issue is that there isnt a single tablet in the sub 10 inch range. Surface is too heavy which doesnt make it optimal for consumption. A Windows tablet with iPad level weight is a Day 1 buy for me.

What the ipad does better, it does much better.
Basically content consumption is all that its good at. Its inferior in web browsing as well because Windows allows me to set default browsers

And I'm upgrading my ipad 2 with the ipads that were just announced.
Good for you. Its been 4 years yet Apple has yet to roll out a compelling iPad upgrade. The newer iPad has an inferior display to Air 2. An instant disqualification in my books. As far as A9 goes it sometimes gets a weaker multi core than the A8X and thats 4 years later

ipad also has better longevity than windows.
My PC from 2009 running the latest version of Windows 10 disagrees with you.

My older windows 7 laptop runs current vmware software sub-optimally
Windows gets filled up with crap if you dont use it properly. If you maintain it it wont slow down. Windows 10 installation on my PC originates back to 2010 when I last formatted and installed a clean version of Windows and its been upgraded from 7 to 8 to 9 to 10 and it sill boots in under a minute and beats my 2014 Air 2

- ipad is superior for consumption, netflix, showtime, hbo etc.
I already said this but when I pay $700+ I do a lot more than just that. The Surface does all of this and then some. iPad does it slightly better but the amount of features I lose moving to iPad doesnt make it worth it. Any iPad beyond 700 isnt worth it

- ipad is superior in battery life
Because its a giant iPhone. And if I compare that iPad to a 2 in 1 (not Surface) its matched in battery life by competing Windows 2 in 1. I am talking about the $700 iPads

- ipad is easier to use
Depends. I have to employ a number of workarounds at my end. I frequently use zip files and there is no way in iOS to open them without downloading. There is no way to set default apps. There is no way to download custom softwares. There is no way you can bckup the said iPad without a computer.

There will never be a surface pro mini, due to the heat generated by the intel chips, and battery life will be abysmal.
Microsoft is trying to get Windows to run on ARM. Its going to happen some day and the day that happens its all over for iPad. Full featured Windows on a 9.7 inch is the future

Surface popularity will continue to inch up, because it's expensive for what you get. I only bought it for convenience while travelling.
Surface popularity is inching up because its starting from 0 so the only way it can go is up. What's impressive is that its maintaining it even in the face of iPad Pro

I expect ipad sales to start to rocket upwards with these new models that were announced,
Hahahahaha. I can almost guarantee it wont because the superior model aka the Air 2 failed at that and it was selling at 299 at a lot of places

while surface will keep inching up due to battery life and expense considerations.

Surface is expensive but so is the iPad Pro. One is a giant iPhone. Other is full featured Windows. Take your pick

I already admit iPad is better value at cheaper prices. But taking price out of the equation Surface is hands down better.

Says a lot that Windows has to put up a laptop to compare with a mobile OS from Apple. Apples and oranges here.

To compare these is rather odd. You have a real os\computer being compared to a glorified larger iphone. I'm an Apple nut, but the surface wins hands down. It's a great device.

Disagree, its a great keyboard. Thinner than the one Apple has for the iPad, excellent key travel and backlit. And the Surface can max out at i7, 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD drive. Hardly sub par.

And, let's face it. If Apple put out the exact same hardware as the Surface, but it ran OSX, people would go apes**t over it - call it "revolutionary".
If Apple were to do that, I for one would roll my eyes, throw my hands up in the air, and storm out of whatever room I was in. Because it's still a computer I don't want, and I'd rather Apple release one I do. A Macbook with a good processor for example. Or this modular Mac Pro they're talking about.

Just one perspective.

Um... Speaking as someone who has used a 9-inch Windows 10 tablet with a high DPI screen, I can say with some authority that what you're asking for probably wouldn't be nearly as cool as you think.

None of that is relevant to what is better for specific people doing specific tasks. Surface is not better depending on your use case and can in fact be an inferior experience to even an iPad 2.

My world isn't limited to games, diet, Heath, exercise are amongst the other things. With 2.2 million vs .66 million iTunes App Store has 3 times as many apps as windows with developers making the most money on the iOS App Store.

Even the PC is developed enough. And in addition a PC can be upgraded regularly. I own a lot of PCs and the latest one is from 2013 which I keep upgrading for 4 years and a XPS from 2009 and both are on the latest 2016 class hardware. Windows bogs down after a year of use if you don't get a virus that scuttles your
Installation or a boss that causes a boot sector corruption. And running the latest windows on old hardware is a no go as pc world has proven.

And when you are able to run a full featured SAP Accounting package and Adobe Photoshop on iPhone and iPad, let me know
When I'm on a 6 hour flight I care less about running sap. What I care about is the 10 hour battery life on my iPad, vs the 4 hour batter life in my surface pro.

The games imo are better on iOS, these days. With my iPad I can use the accelerometer while holding the iPad in my hands moving it about, sp4 is heavy as noted.

Basically content consumption is all that its good at. Its inferior in web browsing as well because Windows allows me to set default browsers
Content consumption is a big part of the appeal of an ipad, whine it's true I can't run a market simulation on my iPad or program in dot net, there are many apps for creating all sorts of content. And as far as web browsing I never felt the need to use anything else other than Safari. One anecdotal experience vs another.

Exactly, good for me. Apple again listened to its customers and produced a product I wanted to buy. Don't need all the bells and whistles of the high end for my uses.

My PC from 2009 running the latest version of Windows 10 disagrees with you.
Pc worlds pc running Windows 10 agrees with me. In this instance I trust pc world.

Does batter life best iPad Air 2?

I already said this but when I pay $700+ I do a lot more than just that. The Surface does all of this and then some. iPad does it slightly better but the amount of features I lose moving to iPad doesnt make it worth it. Any iPad beyond 700 isnt worth it
I lose big time if I try to use my sp4 in the way I use my iPad. Too heavy, too bulky and poor battery life. I have to wonder if the amount of money I spent on our sp4, could get two high end laptops.

Because its a giant iPhone. And if I compare that iPad to a 2 in 1 (not Surface) its matched in battery life by competing Windows 2 in 1. I am talking about the $700 iPads
It's true I can make phone calls on my iPad with 10.3 based on my appleid without wifi. Something can't do on sp4.

Realistically no windows laptop can touch the battery life of an iPad.

Depends. I have to employ a number of workarounds at my end. I frequently use zip files and there is no way in iOS to open them without downloading. There is no way to set default apps. There is no way to download custom softwares. There is no way you can bckup the said iPad without a computer.
None of that matters in a 6 or 7 hour flight.

Microsoft is trying to get Windows to run on ARM. Its going to happen some day and the day that happens its all over for iPad. Full featured Windows on a 9.7 inch is the future

Surface popularity is inching up because its starting from 0 so the only way it can go is up. What's impressive is that its maintaining it even in the face of iPad Pro
Good luck with an arm implementation. There will be sufficient compromises, will be called windows lite.

Surface will never do anything except inch up in popularity.

Hahahahaha. I can almost guarantee it wont because the superior model aka the Air 2 failed at that and it was selling at 299 at a lot of places
Lol, I can guarantee it will because Apple is in a big time roll. Revenue, profits and stock price.

Surface is expensive but so is the iPad Pro. One is a giant iPhone. Other is full featured Windows. Take your pick
Surface is expensive for what you get, won't buy another one. My iPad is a great consumption device as well as a phone; you got that right.

I already admit iPad is better value at cheaper prices. But taking price out of the equation Surface is hands down better.
Sure, if the surface was lighter, better battery life and less expensive the equation would be different. But there is reality.

"Microsoft Surface Beats iPad in Design, Productivity, and Accessory Use in New J.D. Power Study"

Somebody somewhere is booking a nice long holiday on the backhander they were paid for spouting this utter tripe.

To say such a thing would be akin to saying "using a saw which has been gaffer taped to the end of a broom handle, the end of which has been gaffer taped to the end of an old curtain rod, is far more accurate and more elegant in use than merely picking up the saw by its handle and sawing the wood."

An OS and a device which can't make their minds up whether they're mobile or desktop, are better at nothing and exponentially worse at everything. Microsoft have had enough chances to conceive a truly useful and productive device which has the confidence to be a "touch first" tool running ONLY a mobile OS, and have failed dismally, time after time, and so they then decide to smash two OS paradigms together, hoping that none of the hideous UI elements will clash, conflict, confuse or contradict one another... and expect it to TRULY be a product which is equal to iPad, and able to work as efficiently?

"Jack of all trades and master of none."

Oh, and if we ever get off the subjects of usability and power efficiency, touch targets, UX design, etc, we then have the rather nightmarish Microsoft "support" experience to discuss... something I wouldn't want ANYONE to be subjected to.

Well duh, iOS is gimps the possibilities of the iPad Pro, and the Surface comes with a stylus and a keyboard included (whereas the iPad "PRO" doesn't).

I sure as hell wouldn't consider a tablet that had no accessible file system, did not come with a drawing tool or a keyboard as a "pro system". No matter how nice it looks, or how well the OS is designed. the iPad Pro will always be gimped by iOS.
