It's all a matter of spin:

"Did you hear Apple say they can't make iPads as fast as they could sell them? Well, with Surface, we can! We can even make them faster than we sell them! Take that, Apple!"

:D

Because it's a piece of junk, by a piece of junk company run by a shoe salesman, marketed it a junky low-brow way by way of constant attacks on the iPad (which makes them look classically Microsoft "me-too", jealous, envious, and gives the iPad more cachet and airtime looking like the supreme product that everyone wants.... why else would Microsoft advertise it so prevalently), and running a junky OS.

First the Zune, then the Zurface.

It was marketed for fools. But fools figured it sucks.

That's a shame. Whilst it's not something I'd get, a friend has one and it's quite incredible. I love that the keyboard is built into the cover and running native Windows apps on a tablet is great.

AH!
That is WHY its failed.
Cannot DO IT ALL.

Despite the slow sales of the Surface tablets, Microsoft is said to be pushing forward with plans for a second generation tablet.

What else is Microsoft supposed to do? They can't give up on mobile and tablets.

But with Ballmer in charge this statement has more of a 'drunk guy at the roulette table losing his last nickel' feel to it

When the Surface RT was released I was curious, so I went to a Microsoft Store to play with one.

But I still felt it was a B- product (8/10ths of a good product):
The cover/keyboard was unpredictable: some keys worked with a slight touch and others had to be pressed hard.
The hardware is underpowered: I used IE to browse CNN and IMDB. In both cases, the page would render part way, I'd try to touch a link, then the page would finish loading. BUT it knew I had clicked on the screen and would register the click AFTER the page had loaded.

YMMV.

This happens on my ipad 3

That's what happens when you release a s*** product.

lol, that would make everything S*** that is not Apple on this forum.

The product is fine, the issue is Windows OS and mainly the lack of Apps in the Windows ecosystem etc....

I really like Nokia 925, awesome phone, but in the end it lacked the basic Apps that I use daily, like banking.

The product is fine if you don't consider the things that are not fine.

3. A poorly designed original product that nobody wants (e.g. KIN.)

To be fair the failure of the Kin falls at least as much on Verizon. Having initially refused to sell the devices with no, or even a discounted, data plan. A serious problem given that they were targeted towards the teen market.

Double-down on stupid.

Ballmer has absolutely no idea why the 1st-gen Surface isn't selling, so making a 2nd-gen is just plain stupid. It's a dart thrown at a dartboard by a blindfolded drunk -- he'll be lucky to hit the wall, let alone the board.

Not that I'm complaining. As long as Ballmer is CEO, that's one less competitor for Apple.

owww the Irony, as M$ is one of the few companies at present having a go at innovating. Unlike Android Window mobile, is a breath of fresh air.

ios 7 and Mavericks, innovating???.... nah, slapping some fresh paint on.

Windows 8, damn I did not like it after windows 7, though they had a go!!!

Cannot DO IT ALL.

Pardon me?
It could do it all. It had support for any Windows app as well as specially developed tablet apps. It acted like a Cintiq too which was the biggest reason why I wanted one.

Apple has swung for a lot of hits in the past few years, but it has had some disasters. Not many, but I well remember the "Macintosh Portable". Luggable, maybe. Perhaps something Apple had to build in order to teach it what not to do next time. Despite some creative innovations, it was rightly regarded as a dog.

The original "Macintosh Portable" was surely on the heavy side compared to what we have now, I don't think there was anything more portable around at the time.

You ever used one? I think they are quality products. But overpriced. Hopefully, maybe now they haven't sold many the price will drop.

I don't think they are bad, or even overpriced. If there were no other tablets around, I'm sure they would sell... I don't know. Apple somehow convinced people that having a tablet instead of a laptop is a good idea for many people. I haven't seen Microsoft doing any convincing. So I think that there are many million people convinced by Apple to buy a tablet, and 1.7 million of them somehow strayed and bought a "Surface". I really wonder if they had sold that many if there were no other tablets.

The biggest problem with Surface RT: it cannot run legacy Windows applications. No wonder why it failed.

And now with Intel's new Haswell technology CPU's and related chipsets, Micosoft can now roll out Surface models using the regular Windows 8.1 that will have long battery life and run legacy Windows apps if needed.

While Haswell will certainly provide a nice boost in performance and battery life on the Pro model, Microsoft still needs a budget friendly Surface to have any chance of competing in the mainstream tablet market. Though with the failure of RT, they may switch to one of the newer Atom processors.

I must have missed the news where Microsoft lost their 90% desktop OS dominance...

They lost their computer OS dominance. There are definitely more iOS + Android devices now than Windows, and I think iOS on its own is coming quite close already.

I don't know. Apple somehow convinced people that having a tablet instead of a laptop is a good idea for many people.

I don't need Apple to convince me on that, I am already convinced. Browsing the internet, cheking emails and whatever majority of people do on their laptops is far more pleasant on a tablet. I mean who would want to carry around a bulky laptop in a bag just to do that kind of stuff?

The 90s Macs (up until when Steve Jobs fixed Apple) were all bad. Actually, the clamshell iBook was also pretty junky. MacBooks always sold better than this did and were pretty good after the rough start in 2006 with the recalls for hard drive problems.

My Macintosh LC was an absolutely fine product.

I'm not sure that's entirely fair; I've used the Surface tablets and I actually kind of liked them. What I didn't like was the price (the recent drop helps there) and the lack of really usable Metro apps. For the Surface Pro I found myself in the desktop side of the OS more often than not, which was a huge pain in the ass.

For the apps that do work well it's not a bad platform as the multi-tasking is nice, and it does feel a little like that laptop/tablet hybrid. The problem really is that the OS just isn't ready and it's kind of at that awkward stage where no-one can be bothered developing for the OS because it isn't popular enough, but it isn't popular enough because the hardware it's intended for isn't popular enough, and that's not popular because there aren't enough good apps… classic vicious circle :)

If they stick with it I think it could take off; if MS expected it to do well straight off then it was unrealistic of them, it is a little surprising that it's done this badly, but I never expected it to just snap up a big share of the market in one fell swoop. It'll take the next iteration of Dirty Windows (from being touched too much) and some tweaks to the hardware to really take off.

The other thing I can't stand though are the negative iPad comparison ads; they've just come across as bitter and resentful, and seem to do a better job of promoting the iPad.

Don't understand your point.

Most business applications are designed to run on Windows. That isn't living in the past, it's living in the now.

Yes, and thats why most busineses still use windows XP! That is "now" OS isn't it? I only use windows at work (still XP) and wish I didn't. Personal use stoped since 2008! What a horror experience it was!! I don't think I will ever get to use again any windows product. And tablets are aimed to personal use more then busines use anyway.

So I can understand why many people don't even want to have anything to do with windows tablet.

I'm indifferent to Windows - but Windows hates me. At work it's Windows 7, at home OSX and iOS. I can't remember ever having anything go wrong with my Apple devices that couldn't be fixed with a reboot. At work, when I have the misfortune of spending a day in the office, Windows likes to give me at least one problem a week to deal with - today it's a 0x80040600 error in Outlook. Solution? Apparently I need to run Scanpst.exe. Is there a handy option to click on in a drop down menu on the toolbar? Is there hell. I have to first locate the PST file then "write down the text in the filename box" (Microsoft's words, not mine), then use the Start->Search function to navigate a labyrinthine file structure to find the hallowed "Scanpst.exe" (a simple search of "Scanpst.exe" returns no results). Enter aforementioned PST file name (that had previously been written down) into the box and hit OK.

Didn't work.

Still scouring interwebz for solutions.

People are saying the Surface is a good product, but it's still Windows!

----------

It wasn't just being late to the tablet market... Apple had groomed consumers with the iPod for years before the iPhone, and then along comes the iPad and it was a natural extension and expectation. Microsoft never had that luxury/smarts.

That's because they lack vizion.

----------

Drop the price of the Surface Pro to $150 and I will consider purchasing one.

Nope, wouldn't buy one even if it went down to $100.

I find it funny because the "buy a mac" ad was apple doing just that to Microsoft. It seems like people on this form always praise apple when they do anything but when someone else does it, Oh they most be jealous!!!

...which isn't really good for anybody except Apple's staff and shareholders. Competition is what makes companies give it their best, not monopolies.

So true!

That's why I'm not crying along from happiness with Apple fanboys. I'm just not that dogmatic. When Microsoft does well then this is good for the consumer simply because of the competition factor. Godthanks Apple didn't won mayor lawsuits against Samsung and the other way around I may add in this silly patent wars.

More tablets is good for, well, for the tablets as well, this count for all devises out there. Because Apple is loosing ground big time on Samsung mobile devices and especially on Android OS (which is mind blowing going for 75% marketshare if Android keeps on scoring like they have in the last few months). Because of changes in popularity companies will look at their successful competitors and Apple is no exception. Now rumors go that Apple will come with cheaper devices made of plastic of which the hard core Apple fanboys always tend to laugh about those "cheaply made products". Now Apple will come up with the same. Same for screen resolution / size. The hardcore fans where telling that larger screens are just stupid, but now the marketshare goes down dramatically for Apple even Apple will investigate larger screen size. All because of popular demand. And that's a good thing! Knowing Apple, working on Apple products whole of my life, they will at least make a good product for sure, even when they come up with larger screens and plastic devices like their competitors do. So it's a win win situation when other companies doing well and not doing bad...

I remember Apple being saved from going bankrupted by Microsoft. If it wasn't for Bill Gates then there would have been a great possibility that Apple was nothing more then a name in history.
