The obvious next move for Apple would be another 'I'm a Mac, I'm a PC' ad with Hodgman and Long in which we find PC on a movie set with cameras and back drops and high paid celebrities shooting a commercial for Vista. The possible set ups and punch lines are endless but one that would be really great is if they could get either Kramer or Newman to appear in the ad.

What about "I am a PC". "And I'm a Mac". "My psychiatrist told me to be more positive". ... "Good idea, but what about fixing your problems instead of pretending everything is cool?"

I love the old bandwagon ploy in the commercial. "All these people use PC's, that's why you should too." Please. I learned about that logical fallacy in 9th grade.

lol. big words for someone who is completely wrong.

how is this ad different from the "get a mac ads?". So Mac makes fun of PC all the time we should all buy Apple?
All this ad is doing is showing people who use PC.
It's called marketing. maybe you forgot to take that in highschool.
If people are talking about it, then they're obviously doing something right.

btw. the fact that you say "logical fallacy" is redundant. Fallacy connotes logic. therefore to say logical fallacy is incorrect. thats like saying "Mac's are really great awesome". (using either great or awesome is sufficient)

Much better than Seinfeld because it has a point. But again, come up with your OWN idea. You have $300 million!!!!!!!! You can't get a consulting or ad firm to do something here?

Most of that money was probably spent hauling camera gear to africa, or out to the arctic, or out to the middle of shark infested waters.

Not nearly as lame as Apple's stupid "I'm a PC" commercials. At least Microsoft didn't blatantly attack Apple like Apple does to Microsoft.

So answering a commercial with another commercial is not an attack? is also smart and not lame?

It all looked like Detroit to me.
Very unsavory PC places are generally similar to Detroit, anyway.

Suggested Apple Response

First dress Hodgeman up in a dress, high heels and lipstick

Mac: Hi, I'm a Mac
PC: And I'm a PC
Mac: Hey PC, What's with the outfit?
PC: Haven't you heard? Microsoft is spending $300 million dollars to spruce up my image.
Mac: Well, you look... great.
PC: Thanks. I appreciate the compliment.
Mac: So, hows it, working for you.
PC: I like all the glamor but its not really me. I mean lipstick, girdles, all that setup and preparation. Dealing with accessories that work or don't work. You have it easy.
Mac: What do you mean?
PC: Don't give me that. All you have to do is turn yourself on and everything's ready. Drag, drop and off you go. You were born with a natural advantage - iMovie, iPhoto - you can even run Windows applications if you have to. Not to mention you go great with neat devices like iPods, iPhones and digital cameras. It'd cost me extra just to get a screen as good as you were born with. Some people have all the luck.
Mac: Come on PC. Think positive.
PC: Easy for you to say. There is one thing though
Mac: What's that?
PC: Takes my mind off of Vista.

Goes to closing shot of an iMac with PC stumbling off in the background.
PC (muttering): Damn heels.

Apple is free to use w/o permission. (another mac would be nice though:D)

And here I was expecting some comment about putting lipstick on a pig ;)

I wonder if MS has ever considered bringing out a "Vista Lite" product that required little in the way of legacy compatibility, could be used only with very recent equipment, would be intended for home users, not business. It might not even have to be based on DOS... It just seems to me that Windows has gotten so bloated, has to be all things to all people, has so much legacy requirments that is might not be salvageable. Would be interesting to see what some of those smart fellows (and ladies) at MS could do if they were given a (nearly) blank slate to work with.

Good ad series. Shows that people use PCs in their everyday life.

But ... how many of those "PCs" really want to switch to Macs, but just haven't found the time :D

Seriously, this is MUCH better than what MS has done to date, but it certainly don't mean I'm switching back. I think this is more for people who already use PCs, and are feeling "un hip" to say "hey, it's OK to use a PC" but it in no way addresses why you should switch to PC, and certainly doesn't communicate any benefits of the PC platform.

This feels like step 2 in their marketing strategy (certainly step 1 got us all talking about MS ads, even though they were terrible). Let's see what they do next.

Note to Apple: I think MS just made your "I'm a Mac" ads look lame (and I've liked them from day one). Time to find a new advertising approach. Hey, it only took MS two years to respond!

Not really. The Mac commercials are comparative illustrating different feature sets of the two platforms. We've had ads about security, migration, stability, integration, creative software, etc. The PC ads have yet to show a feature set, only that people use PCs. There is a difference.

Take a philosophy course. Logical Fallacy is in fact a type of fallacy - one of reasoning. Visit http://www.logicalfallacies.info/ for more information.

C'mon -- did you make that up? That's pretty good. Are you in the business, or did you just get lucky :p

what that about "i broadcast for mccain" thing?
isnt that like losing 50% of your customers? :)

No, Republicans and Democrats alike only have about a 16% share of the public as a whole supporting them. Just cos Apple hates Republicans doesn't mean Republicans will stop using their Macs either, look at Bush (iPod) and Rove(iphone) as an example. And I bet Chaney has at least a "back to school" Macbook.

I just find it weird to think that a company with 98% of the world's market share feels threatened enough to respond to a relatively little company like Apple.

Paranoia and the ultracompetitive need to crush everyone was always a hallmark of Microsoft's culture. Guess that hasn't changed.

I also think Microsoft is deluding itself into thinking that people are switching to Macs because of Apple's advertising, when the problem is Microsoft's product. Plenty of people are switching from Vista back to XP, too, and that certainly can't be blamed on Apple.

do you know how to read the news properly?

As a reaction to all other ads they did and apple did, they are good imo, really. Nontheless, there's one thing. Consumers not knowing the previous ads or those of apple will have no clue why all those people are saying that they are a PC. Maybe to really get away from the stereotype which they successfully acheived to mention, they should not saying that they actually are PC but rather more that they use microsoft products.

PS: One more thing: as a non-native english speaker, I was wondering sometimes why all those people are saying that they are PC-ng... :p

Which would be fine, if most of what they said in the commercials were true. Sure, creative software/security, I do think that's where OS X excels. But OS X (Especially Leopard) has crashed on me a whole lot more than Vista has.

I still prefer OS X, but a lot of what Apple says in the "I'm a Mac... I'm a PC" ads is just untrue at this point.
