Current Vista User

Hey guys I'm pretty sure this is my first post here, I've been stalking these forums all summer while I've been interning in NYC. Ironically, the Dell Laptop with Vista I'm on right now I won for free from Microsoft (Go check out MTVU Quad Squads) and it's what's turning me away from Windows!!!

I can honestly say I am a smart user that knows what to/not to download and I know everything that's on my system. In spite of my careful computer usage, I have to format my harddrive at least once every few months for it to function normally. I can't wait for my internship to end so I can order a Macbook/Pro (still trying to decide if I'll play games enough to justify the video card/big screen premium, PM me with advice please!)

Hopefully you'll find the irony of my up and coming switch like I did!!

Crispin Porter + Bogusky

Finally, I couldn't keep this campaign seriously because it reminded me too much of Burger King's "Whopper Freakout" campaign

I'm not surprised to hear you to say that, because the same ad agency -- Crispin Porter + Bogusky -- created both ad campaigns! Microsoft went outside of their usual ad agency and hired slick, edgy CPB to help them "think outside the box" on how to fight back against Apple's "Mac vs. PC" ads and improve Vista's image in the marketplace. (Fast Company article)

Clearly, CPB is hoping to leverage their Burger King "Whopper Freakout" success by again employing the use of hidden cameras. The approach in both campaigns is an effort to show a sharp contrast between a brand's assumed perception (lame/commodity/old news) and it's "real" perception (cool/vital/must-have) as revealed by real people on hidden camera. The net takeaway is "It's not as bad as you think."

Wow! Great Commercial Microsoft! I'm impressed.

Until I started thinking about it (took about 5 seconds). Then you realize that they used Vista for half an hour at most, on a computer with 4 gb of ram and a 3 ghz processor. They didn't even show the OS.

They never talked about any (or very few) of the functions and just how it looked or how "easy it was". Yes it is easy... When compared with XP. But even then it has gotten that much easier...

Also, their marketing strategy is almost exactly like Apple's. But I guess you could cut them some slack. Its not like they have copied Apple before.

Bet you thought that I actually LIKED that commercial at first, didn't you? :D

But, to be nice, I'll give the highlights also...
Ehh... Nevermind. I can't think of anything. Oh wait.. I thought of something. The music is good. :D

good luck with your Macbook Pro. It's quite a fancy machine. However your comment about the laptop not costing you anything --it cost you oh so much more than you think. Once you get a mac you'll figure that out.

Grim, but at least not in denial

Personally, I find it particularly grim for Microsoft's brand that they are at this point, where they have to actually showcase their awful brand impression in order to dispel it. However, that they are going to these lengths shows that at least they are aware of how grim the situation is, and are no longer in denial about it. That is to be commended, I suppose.

While I was watching the testimony video, I kept thinking to myself:"Are these people serious?? How could they not know this is Vista??" I mean, for people who know about the bad traits of Vista, they gotta at least know what Vista looks like.. Then I saw the Making DVDs video and that pissed the hell out of me.. they made the whole process looks so easy and painless..click click burn zoom...new dvd .. But that's not my experience at all !! I still cant burn DVDs using DVD maker, the progress takes hours and always..always..crash at 99%.

this is probably what really happened

MS gets a WAY over-spec'ed computer so that Vista will run good on it then they get their employees to dress up in street clothes and do the videos

I dont know why MS doesnt just turn the tables on Apple and start ruthlessly destroying Leopard in ads. They have so many options to attack OSX on that its not even funny.

Thanks!! I'm eagerly waiting for the updates to come out (unless they come out after the ipod promotion of course then it's just bad luck). They are beautiful machines and I've been test driving them for hours on end at least 4 days here in NYC (the apple store on 5th avenue is CRAZY PACKED all the time). I just can't believe a free vista turned me away from Bill Gates to Steve Jobs (who I've learned is a genious)

Here would be a good add.
Users made to use OSX leopard on a iMac G4 800 with 512 ram and on a iMac Core2duo 2.4GHz with 2 GB of ram then test Windows Vista with Intel Pentium 4 2.16 GHz(believe this was the norm of when the G4 800 was out) and then a Core2duo 2.4GHz and see what system the like best.
As most users keep there computers for a long time >5 years often its best to show how there aged computers manage current systems to give a judgement of how well the new computer will scale.

If the television ads are as convoluted as this then I can't see this working. The way this was touted before we knew anything of it, it seemed like it was meant to counter Mac Vs PC advertising. In reality it has nothing to do with it (to say Vista's negative press comes from Apple's ads would give them far too much credit).

I was looking forward to Microsoft taking a far more aggressive approach, but this is a bit weak in my opinion and won't catch people's attention.

I was really hoping for...

Mac: Hi, I'm a Mac
PC: And I'm a PC
Mac: What are you doing PC?
PC: Playing the latest games in directX 10, something exclusive to Windows Vista. What are you doing Mac, you ****ing smarmy c-unt. Playing around with photos? I can do that on more affordable hardware, you piece of worthless ****.

Focus groups! LOL

I also find it humorous that Microsoft is making this big "we're cool afterall" pitch by showcasing a "focus group" setting. Apple has always proudly rejected the idea of using focus groups for anything!

It's really hard to design products by focus groups. A lot of times, people don't know what they want until you show it to them.

- Steve Jobs, BusinessWeek, May 1998

I have to admit, Vista is not as bad as people say it is. IMO, it's better than XP. But how could those people not tell it was Vista? (Unless they gave it a new UI)

1. None of these people look to tech savvy.
2. How come they could not tell what vista looked like?
3. Who are these people?
4. What did they do in "MOJAVE"? IE 7?

I would also like to note that for doing simple tasks like web browsing Vista is not bad. Vista starts to get sluggish after you start to use it for more than simple tasks. But OS X is better at doing those simple things a lot easier and better. There is no comparison in mid-range to pro level apps, OS X is just better at them.

Clipped....

ALSO i bet vista was running on a 4Gb 3.0Ghz computer. With specs liek that, YES vista will run quite well... most people dont have money to go buy a brand new laptop for vista tho. So these people were seeing what vista is like on a computer that is overqualified to run vista. MOST computers are underqualified to run vista.

Clipped....

Additionally, anybody want to bet that the computer they saw it on was hand picked by Microsoft and the software was installed by a Microsoft technician, who tested the dog snot out of it to make sure that EVERYTHING was perfect....

Hardly your typical end-user set-up.

Putting toothpaste back in the tube never works. Vista made it so easy for me to sell Apples. The damage is done. No amount of marketing silliness will undo the damage that Vista did to an already tarnished reputation at Microsoft.

Yea, they probably spent a few hours removing all the bundled crapware as well.

You wouldn't want BonziBuddy popping up in the middle of a demo, would you?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (device; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5A347 Safari/525.20)

of course it is in flash so iPod/iPhone people can't see it.

My sister just bought a dell with Vista. It actually looks nice, and isn't as visually painful for me as the last 3 versions of Windows have been. That being said, in helping her set it up, I was close to slamming my face into the monitor if I had to answer another "confirm/deny".

I will not give up my OSX.

The funny (and ironic) thing about that Burger King experiment is if you fast-forward it to about 6:35 in the video, there's a guy with a shirt on that says "Mojave Electric" Haha, now that's funny.:p
