These app store where you easily download and installs an app on the local computer will go away relatively quickly, or rather we will soon take the next step.

The future is in application virtualization where the programs resides on a server and is streamed to the computer of the user when it needs it. The processing power can either be done on the server or on the local machine.

No need to maintain an installed application you can access it from any device and no skill is needed by the user.

'App Store' trademark

Love APPLE and most of what it produces (still sitting on the fence with FCP X), but I completely disagree with their 'ownership' of the term 'App Store'.

'App Store' is way too generic and popular with so many platforms these days. A proper noun trademarked is fair enough but not this. It's like trademarking 'Shopping Centre' or 'Tomato Sauce' or 'Train Station' or even 'Software'.

The term 'App' was around a bit before Apple used it aplenty (granted, it wasn't used in common or popular lingo), but I really don't think they have exclusivity over the term 'App Store'.

Wishing Microsoft and Amazon (to name but 2 big names) all the best with this battle.

Windows 8 looks incredibly disgusting! What better time to get a Mac

I second that. The Windows 8/Windows Phone GUI is an absolute train-wreck.
Like the Steve said, there's no culture in Microsoft's products.
You would think that, with the Windows Phone abysmal sales thus far, they would get a hint, but nope...

Of course, Microsoft Windows has to have an App Store. They have to copy everything that Apple has. It wouldn't be normal if they didn't. That's the reason why Microsoft has 'Steve' Ballmer because Apple has 'Steve' Jobs. As soon as Apple opens up the Grand Central Terminal Apple Store, Microsoft is going to open up the Penn Station Microsoft Store six months later. When Apple finishes building the Cupertino Circular Headquarters, Microsoft will finish building the Seattle Parallelogram Headquarters six months later.

Any time Apple does something, Microsoft sits back, takes a look and decides that Apple knows what it is doing and then copies it. Why bother to reinvent the wheel. Just add different colors and different spokes and that's good enough. :D:D:D ;)

Ironic Post considering that your just copying all of the other Crazed Apple fans on this site with your comment.

Why ?

It contributes nothing.

Are we trying to fit in? That's "Thinking Different"

......

I think the fact that it has windows in front of the "app store" is reason enough not to worry about it. How well could it possibly do with windows in front haha. Also, in my opinion there is no way windows 8 can compare to lion.

P=mv : Microsoft has a ton of mass but unfortunatly V=0. Apples V=C, apple looses mass its so fast!

Call me a fanboy and I will reply "thank you, i love good engineering"

How long have you been using Windows 8? Tell us what you like and don't like about it.

What is with all the attacking and hate here by people bashing others and calling them derogatory fanboy. You jokers have total derailed any discussion in this thread with your mindless and baseless attacks on other posters. Knock it off.

Welcome to MacRumors.

I wonder how Microsoft manages to get Windows so ugly.

Do they employ undesigners?

PS: Windows tries to look like what OS X looked like 3 years ago. Looks like they are catching up.

lol, Windows 8 :D

Too little too late.

Yah, We get it. You guys like Apple and hate Windows.

Got anything else kids?

Anything to bring to the discussion ?

Or are you just Trolling ?

Yup, Trolling goes both ways.

Trolling is not allowed on this site yet Trolling for Apple seems to be allowed as long as you insult Apples competition while doing it. I don't know why its accepted around here. It IS Trolling and these comments only serve to get a negative reaction from people.

But make no mistake. It's Trolling just the same

Uh, are you kidding? Microsoft is just shoving Windows onto any device it can, and OS X is not going to be iOS.
So building walls is better then building bridges?

I'm not too fazed about the tiled UI, looks more touch-friendly than standard mouse inputs.
As the screenshot shows the portion of the UI that is meant primarily for touch devices...i think you are right.

funny how MS always tried to bring a desktop OS to a mobile phone and nowadays it looks like they are trying to take a mobile OS and make it work on a desktop

I think you miss the point of the current win8 direction. MS seems to have taken a hint from linux to run the same core OS on all devices and have a UI that is as similar as possible. Personally I am looking forward to a OS that can run on x86, x64 and ARM systems without the need to have different software for different hardware. Surely some Applications (or Programms ;)) will be more suited for a tablet or a desktop but having the general ability to run a software on any system gives you the ability to view and edit all your data on all your devices...awesome!

So as long as the Desktop interface is still there and not dumbed down to be touch optimized only this would be great for any user (be it a windows user or a iOS/OSX user).

From the display previews .. I think Windows 8 looks like Windows Media Center on a fully functional Windows. Huge array of icons, maybe smooth animated and so called touch friendly.

AppStore is kinda universal now, PSN and Xbox Marketplace did that first. So I wouldn't call Microsoft trying to copy Apple. If that's the case then Apple copied PSN too :D

Ermm the Windows tiles looks nothing like OS X.

As an end user interface, I really don't think it looks too bad. It seems quite intuitive really. The concept of having small applets replace the icons is pretty interesting and it really does offer up an interesting alternative to traditional icons.

I'm curious how it is to support and how it will be accepted by the power users.

The traditional Window interface is still there with some improvements and can be accessed easily for so called power users. The tile interface UI is an option and most likely will be the standard for Touch Friendly devices such as tablets.

I think a lot of peoples worries are going to be put to rest at the Microsoft Build Conference on September 13th.

The tiles interface isn't going to be required to use Windows 8

I'm just stating my view that Windows is getting more and more funny as it advances. Not for the sake of Mac vs. PC, but I'm just rather surprised that despite all the great ideas out there, Microsoft isn't able to pull together something consistent, useful, and pretty. Windows XP was amazing and still kind of is, but everything since then just went down hill. I switched to a Mac because I found that Vista is horrible and XP was getting old. Then came 7 which, to me, is just like Vista. And Windows 8 has this weird Phone interface. What if my computer doesn't have a touch screen? Then it will look and feel crap. I think that's pretty lame, isn't it?

I'd like Microsoft to bring out something really good and useful, why aren't they doing something? Is it because everyone's going to buy Windows anyway, regardless of what it's like? Every bit of innovation they have is about copying Apple in some way, and every other idea they have is just ridiculous. I've used PCs for many, many years and since I switched to a Mac, if I go back to a PC, I realize that some things are just horribly badly designed and thought out. How could I not hate Windows after that?? It has betrayed me after all those years of use. I was loyal and reinstalled my 3 PCs once every year. I just got tired of it!

This isn't about Apple being awesome. This is about Microsoft not being original. Look at all the great companies out there who make great products, the ones that are original, new and useful. Not just Apple, but mostly every company out there: Adobe, Google, etc... They all have something original that no one else can do. What can Microsoft do that others can't? An App Store? A touch-like interface for non-touch computers? The Start menu? The beautiful Aero design? The system tray that works just like the Dock? The fact that your system gets slower every month for no particular reason? The fact that non-responsive programs cannot be terminated regardless of how many times you force them to quit? I just don't see any effort from Microsoft's side whatsoever to do something great. Look at Google, they're constantly making things. Sure, they keep failing at it, but some things really work for them. Adobe keeps bringing out new software with really new ideas. Not to mention Apple.

Actually without Microsoft, Apple wouldn't exist at all...
Microsoft saved Apple when it was on the verge of bankruptcy.
