I see this as being a superior tablet experience in a lot of ways.
Especially for developers.
Imagine being able to run all of your applications from your Mac (Even the older ones that you purchased in the past) on your iPad
Well that scenario of supporting legacy applications is exactly what Windows 8 is going to do.

No matter what they call the Windows marketplace, it's going to be successful.
Some people are scared of a future where OSX and iOS merge into iOSX , but seeing the idea of this strategy from Microsoft calms a lot of nerves going forward.

The normal desktop atmosphere is still available....everything from before is still available, but now the OS has evolved to meet the needs of more devices and people.

And that's what your most likely going to see with iOSX.

I'm pretty happy with the direction these two companies are going.

It's like they are slowly poking and prodding each other into the future.:)

Apple was thinking and most likely already doing something in that direction in 2007.

I personally like the term "Marketplace" better than "App Store" anyway.

In the marketplace you can bargain.

Microsoft should just call it the Windows Marketplace a bit like the Xbox Marketplace on LIVE.

I'm not too fazed about the tiled UI, looks more touch-friendly than standard mouse inputs.

I think the reason apple names catch on is because their mostly easier to pronounce. "App Store" is easier to say than "Market place" and so on. I do like the idea of "Window(s) Shopping" I think that's a clever pun, cudos :)

Just as long as we are clear on that right?

Gotta make sure we give all the credit to Apple right.

They didn't do it first,...but we all know they were "thinking" about it.

In 2007 they had JUST launched the iPhone ! And they didn't even have an App store yet ! They were pushing web apps.

But, .....they were thinking about it .:p

Yey Apple

As long as we get to the future, who cares right?

Plus, Apple did not invent the App Store. My old Sony Ericsson had a form of an app store too but that did not come into fruition as well as Nokias running Symbian. But, Apple did prove that such stores are very viable in smartphones with the right marketing. Since Apple proved it will materialise, mobile OSses adopted an App Store-like platform.

I'm an Apple fan but not to the point of blind worshipping and blaming everyone that adopted an Apple-esque feature. And with Windows adding an online app store could quicken the death of optical media.

Fanboys...

It was known ages ago Microsoft were going to have a download store. I remember reading about it way before Apple copied Linux and put one in.

And they were first to come up with successful smartphone and mainstream very successful app store. Others just played catch up since 2007. So what's your point gain?

I'm not going to play "who invented or copied what" game it's pretty silly. And when i saw iPhone in 2007 i thought that this is a rather obvious move Apple will make in the future. It's pretty hard to look at it and not see this.

My point was and still is that I don't know anyone who saw the iPhone in 2007 and thought it was going to merge with OSX and become one.

Maybe you are a prophet like your signature says.:D

Is it true that Microsoft likes 2-D the way Apple likes 3-D? All (#exaggeration) icons, tiles logos etc., are 2-D.

It's a good idea to have a store though. This way people won't be tricked into buying naughty ;) software.

And on a slightly un-related note, it almost looks as though MS is trying to beat Apple to the unified-across-all-devices OS ... Interesting.

Apple made the decision to use different OSes for computers and tablets.

We'll see how it works out for Microsoft...

It's very amusing to read the insults from folks with no first hand experience of Windows 8 or the Metro UI.

Metro UI is streamlined and iconic, it may not be to everyone's tastes much like iOS isn't - but that doesn't automatically make it junk.

There is a level of ignorance that permeates these forums that is rather disturbing, and ultimately childish.

Schoolboys having a pissing contest, screaming 'sir sir he copied me'... If the same energy used in belittling users of other operating systems, degrading others opinions, and posting spurious sexual insults - was spent instead on researching the histories & business practices of both Apple & Microsoft, it would be an eyeopener. Neither are the enemy, and neither are angels, both have done plenty of copying not only of each other but of many other software and hardware companies. Ask Olivetti ;-)

Of course, Microsoft Windows has to have an App Store. They have to copy everything that Apple has. It wouldn't be normal if they didn't. That's the reason why Microsoft has 'Steve' Ballmer because Apple has 'Steve' Jobs. As soon as Apple opens up the Grand Central Terminal Apple Store, Microsoft is going to open up the Penn Station Microsoft Store six months later. When Apple finishes building the Cupertino Circular Headquarters, Microsoft will finish building the Seattle Parallelogram Headquarters six months later.

Any time Apple does something, Microsoft sits back, takes a look and decides that Apple knows what it is doing and then copies it. Why bother to reinvent the wheel. Just add different colors and different spokes and that's good enough. :D:D:D ;)

I often wonder what the point in posting articles like this is. It stands to reason that Microsoft would have some sort of Application distribution system built in to the OS.

This has nothing to do with Apple and has purely been written to insight the normal "Apple vs Microsoft" arguments.

Well - it's flame-bait - and as you can see, the strategy really works.

Same applies to every news related to patents (you know, the famous one-eyed bashing there) or competitors.

And on topic: Windows will allow digital software downloads from one source? Shocker. Any of you actually ever visited the Microsoft webpage?

You know - the one where you not only buy hardware (like mice and keyboards) but also get instant downloadable software (alas currently only MSFT one)?

And I personally don't see it as a positive, as I do not like this upforced trojan called "Mac App Store" on my system. I'd rather have the developer earning the full share on his work and buy directly from the source.

Windows Phone 7 didn't have copy-n-paste when it launched.

And that was 3 years after Apple was slammed for that!

Thing is that copy and paste actually aren't naturally intuative features for a phone. That said, from the news conference where Balmer was asked about it (Oh s***, isn't it in there) seems to suggest that someone was supposed to put it in there, but everyone thought that it was supposed to be someone elses responsibility.

Kind of a big oversight... don't ya think?

Especially after the ****storm Apple got by not including it years before...

Blame it on too many MS engineers stirring the pot...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_4 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8K2 Safari/6533.18.5)

What is with all the attacking and hate here by people bashing others and calling them derogatory fanboy. You jokers have total derailed any discussion in this thread with your mindless and baseless attacks on other posters. Knock it off.

I actually praise microsoft for getting it out fairly quickly once they realised it wasn't there. I'm not sure, but I first noticed copy and paste weren't on my iPod Touch, and it took quite a while before apple made the update. Not saying microsoft are 'better' than apple or anything, just that it was good that once the problem was brought to their attention, they fixed it quickly.
