Hummm.... can't seem to figure out why so many Windoze lovers and Android lovers feel compelled to come to an Apple enthusiast forum and rant and rave anti Apple junk???

I guess when you go from almost dead to one of the most influential, most innovative and most valuable company in the world in about 15 years you attract trolls and haters?

I just don't get why they feel so compelled to come here and try and convince us that Windows or Android is better? I don't hang out at the Android or Windoze forums and bash them?

Perhaps you should be asking why a Mac site is posting MS news that has nothing to do with Apple?

I have seen more Apple users bashing Windows in this thread..

Microsoft actually announced plans to do something like this long before Apple announced its App Store for OS X. So this news is not new. It's been known about for a long time now among those who follow what Microsoft is doing and working on.

Have you used either? I have (Win8 milestone builds), it's great.

Windows Phone GUI is probably the best out there, it's very intuitive and slick.

My remark was about how it looks: so uninspiring that you don't wanna try it out unless you absolutely have to.

Not surprised to see a lot of blind and fanatic Apple disciples here. But truly .. for me it's childish to mock everything that not Apple.

I have my respect for Windows, I use Bootcamp on my Macs .. I need them still since I don't have decent games to play on OSX side. At least when the software library for OSX can be as huge as Windows... you just can't count Microsoft out of equation.

So .. please, have some respect. Maybe many Windows user has problems, but I can easily spot problems on Mac side too. OSX issues, or hardware issues is no less compromising than in PC world.

Windows does take Apple's best ideas, and implement them into their own products. But that's generally because they are good ideas, to which a better alternative might not have been idealized.

However, when it comes to the App store in particular. People criticizing Microsoft do realize that Apple is not the first software company to implement an App Store right? Without doing a shred of research, a little program called Steam comes to mind. Nevertheless, no one knows who came up with the idea for an App Store, but I can assure you it wasn't Apple.

I'm not trying to downplay Apple's role in the popularity of App Stores, no doubt they made it marketable. But to think Apple created or invented the idea of an App Store is so unbelievably absurd it's laughable. They didn't invent the Applications Store, just like they didn't invent Cloud computing.

The point is, they are marketing experts. But when it comes to development of new technology, they are very rarely at the forefront. So let's not sit here and pretend like everyone is copying off Apple. Most of Apple's products are developed from existing technology.

Could I just say, Windows 8 is like my worst computing nightmares come true-a desktop computer running a mobile operating system. *shudder*

I honestly wonder if Macrumors posts these articles just to rile people up, it sure seems like flame bait.

It's still got the Classic Windows interface. Also, if you think this is bad, just wait to see what Apple's got in store for you.

*sigh* Apple fanboys blindly believing Apple invented App stores. ....

Just like Steve said he didn't want to known for inventing the PC, he wanted to be known for inventing the first GOOD PC. Same with native code downloads. Microsoft pioneered native code download a.k.a. viruses, er.... "ActiveX" over the web. But Apple brought native code back, only trusted, secure, and virus free. And guess what? It just works. Something even Android is contending with in their own official Android Marketplace.

The fact is, Windows users are very accustomed to clicking "Continue Anyway", on software and drivers, even from OEM. Properly signing, verifying code, and security have NEVER been Microsoft's priority. Market domination is. Even the passwordless UAC has been notoriously ignored or even suggested to be turned off! Unlike Apple, a processor sucking antivirus and native firewall should always be on in Windows (on Mac it's factory off, no point in wasting CPU cycles on antivirus either -sorry it's true). Better make sure half your processor is running hot and half the battery life if you want to leverage a Microsoft Store.

The term App Store is known for virus free, highly vetted code (something Microsoft cares little about) and should continue to be that way. Period.

here is a ball..... perhaps you would like to bounce it

I watched the demo video on Windows 8, the interface and features don't look half bad at all. It has a nice simplistic look to it, everything is flat and clean looking. As far as I'm concerned it's a welcome change. Most of the new features are geared towards touch users, but the overall experience looks well thought out.

Microsoft did right by it's customers with Windows 7. I have absolutely zero problems with Viruses, Performance, or Utilization. I'm hoping Microsoft can continue the trend they're on right now. The only thing they really lack is the Marketing.

I'll always be a PC and Mac owner. They both offer things the other can't.

Linux repositories with different front end applications.

Windows 8 is more or less Windows 7 with an application launcher on top of it. It is far from a mobile operating system.

I believe it should be called Program Store for Windows. But i agree Apple doesn't deserve exclusive rights to that term.

Why should it be called The Program Store? Look what Windows has called software since before Apples App Store.

Yes, because we know how great is Microsoft's track record on making tablets useful.

But they DO have a history in MAKING THEM !

Just because the technology wasn't there in the early days you think they were horrible.

Well at least they had a direction in mind. They WERE innovating and improving with every revision.

Microsoft has been trying to get to a REAL Tablet experience like the one coming out with Win 8 for a long time.

They aren't copying anyone. So get that though your head

With the new Tablets, it will be an evolution of the idea: Running and supporting ALL Applications ...Not scaling down the experience to the rinky dinky iOS philosophy where it is a totally different and incompatible OS to the desktop client.

So YES ...Microsoft IS good at making tablets

Why should it be called The Program Store? Look what Windows has called software since before Apples App Store.

This is how I see it:

The 'Windows Application Store' is an appropriate name, although a bit of a mouthful.

App is short for application, I am sure that people have used the term before Apple created the App Store.

Therefore 'Windows App Store' should be appropriate.

You lose all credibility by calling Windows "Windoze".

I am a fan of technology & gadgets, not of one company in-particular. A pre-requisite for this forum isn't to be an idiot fanboy.

Or Windows Marketplace. All their app stores, including those on WP7 are called "Marketplaces" although it looks ilke this is just going to be called Windows Store.

Seriously, we need to all stop caring about "oh, they just copied ____". or "oh, ____ had that feature first". It's nonsensical. I want products...from any company...that work. If that means they stand on the shoulders of who came before with features, so be it. If Windows wants an application store, why do I care if Apple had one first? If Apple is updating iOS to have more robust notifications, why do I care that Android had it first? Do they want a fricken prize?

Why not take it to the extreme? Why not criticize the iPad for using an LCD screen with "oh, Compaq had LCD screens on their laptops back in the 90's, this is nothing new, Apple is just copying others by using an LCD". Makes as much sense.

Come on...

Exactly - and Apple has done their share of copying/borrowing/stepping ont he shoulders of other companies and have even admitted so (i.e. Kindle).

That being said. What I wonder is why anyone who is so devoted to Apple cares what Microsoft does. How would it impact your world? It's not like the Apple devotees will ever have to USE whatever Microsoft does. It's funny because more times than not - when someone has such a palpable reaction it's based in fear or jealousy. I'm guessing a little fear here. Better to put down the competition and make yourself feel better (much like a bully would do).

I've said it in other threads - but it's always good to say again - you can enjoy something without having to put down other people or companies. Different strokes for different folks.

For the app store to succeed they need to have self-contained app too, not installers, because it will be just another Windows nightmare.

Windows has had this little thing called MSI files since about Windows 2000. It's how corporations deploy software through GPOs automatically to workstations, unattended and it works perfectly already. Heck, the AD integration, GPO unattended installs and MSI files put together are a very versatile feature.

Let's say I have had the IT department push out Office to my workstation and have all the shortcuts for it in the start menu or on the desktop or on the Quicklaunch bar depending on how the IT department customized the MSI file. All the apps work flawlessly without me having had to run through any wizards or anything.

Now, let's say I accidentally delete winword.exe or an important dll from my system, you'd think this whole integration would break and leave everything a splendid mess right ? Wrong. When I click the shortcut, the Application will open as it always did before. The GPO will simply reinstall the missing files on my workstation without me being made aware. Same for updates, the IT department will package it up and push it out through the GPO.

No need for app bundles like Apple, Microsoft already has unattended and automatic installations of applications down, they've had it down for over 10 years now. Just need to apply their enterprise level code to an Internet based marketplace, and boom, instant, easy and convenient application installations.

And I say this as the staunchest of Microsoft haters.

Zune Desktop Edition

Microsoft should worry about making Windows 7 more stable and secure instead of switching to yet another version of Windows.

With that new GUI, it should be called Microsoft Mosaics 8. It looks terrible, unless that's just a status screen. What are they thinking!?

Yes and Apple never said multitasking was revolutionary so whats your point?

Hum...

http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/multitasking.html

Now you can run your favorite third-party apps — and switch between them instantly — without slowing down the performance of the foreground app or draining the battery unnecessarily.* This smarter approach to multitasking is available only in iOS 4.

You do realise that Microsoft has many teams working in parallel and supports OS through long life-cycles right ?

Here, read up about it :

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows/products/lifecycle

Microsoft does not operate like Apple. They will keep support and updates going for Windows 7 even while working on Windows 8 and even when Windows 8 ships and is the current version.

Come on folks, don't make me into the Microsoft defender here. I hate the company's ethics and their industry destroying shenanigans with a passion. There's so many things wrong with Microsoft as a whole, no need to come up with fake crap to throw at them.

If you're going to hate, hate with facts, not pure made up non-sense.

I'm an Apple fan (otherwise I'll not even be here) but I simply denounce the fanboyish attitude here. The blind hate on Windows and Android is just insane. I know this is a site for Apple enthusiasts but I know we are better than blindly hating on Windows and/or Android.

Windows 7? Unstable? Have you used it?

You mean like Lion?
Pretty soon, anyone actually wanting to use a computer will need to run Linux, since Win 8 and Lion will have degenerated into mobile operating systems.
