Hummm.... can't seem to figure out why so many Windoze lovers and Android lovers feel compelled to come to an Apple enthusiast forum and rant and rave anti Apple junk???

Hum... I don't love Windows, don't own an Android phone nor have I ever, own Apple products and use them and love them. But frankly, you know what made me post "pro-Microsoft" junk ?

The damn Mac head/iOS junkies that can't seem to know the facts before they spout hate towards anything not-Apple.

Seriously, this thread wasn't close to being about Apple, it's about Windows 8 and a supposed application marketplace it will have, what does Apple even have to do with this aside from being competition ? Do we really need all the "Copying Apple!" and "Apple did it first! this will suck!" ignorant comments littering the thread ?

Next time you're wondering why the Apple crowd gets "trolled" so much, stop and wonder if they're not the ones attracting it. I hate Microsoft, yet I can't stand by while ignorance is being spewed in a thread, even if it is about them.

I guess when you go from almost dead to one of the most influential, most innovative and most valuable company in the world in about 15 years you attract trolls and haters?

I just don't get why they feel so compelled to come here and try and convince us that Windows or Android is better? I don't hang out at the Android or Windoze forums and bash them?

This is a RUMOR site. For speculation and discussion.

Maybe your lost, can I direct you home to the APPLE FAN CLUB ?

Just because we are interested in Apple rumors it doesn't mean we should be frothing at the mouth with Apple rabid comments hating on other technology. Some of us are capable of having more than one company in our lives and aren't as "Dedicated" ....as you

Great! But lets not forget that downloading system software, utilities and games was present on games consoles and PC's long before the Mac App Store. Let's not pretend they were the first, or even the first successful (Steam) service.

First of all - your points might be better taken if you didn't resort to name calling. It's Windows.

And I know exactly why someone like YOU would never go to a forum other than Apple - it's because you wouldn't be able to take the heat you got from posting something negative there or praising Apple.

Much easier for you to "hide" here and spew vitriol against people and/or companies and their products in "safety" in what you consider a fan forum. This isn't a fan forum. It's a forum for people who own Apple products and/or are doing research or just want to be in the know of what's going on in the industry.

I don't get your seemingly hatred towards other people, their opinions or other companies. Surely you can accept that Apple isn't and won't ever be the ONLY company that produces technology. Are you going to waste YOUR time getting frustrated and annoyed at that fact?

Enjoy your Apple products. I do. But I can also appreciate competition with piece of mind that not everyone has the same needs as I do - so everyone can enjoy having a choice in what works best for them.

Linux is the most used mobile operating system there is. Or did you mean mobile GUI ?
Technically.

There's MeeGO, Symbian(?), Android, WebOS, the newer Blackberry OSs and tons of others that are based around the Linux kernel.

You have to admit that some of the features look quite good, like running two applications side by side, and how smooth it is to swipe between applications.

Yes, it is looking quite good. Is it shipping yet?
Will I get downvoted if I mention Microsoft's history of vaporware and incredibly shrinking feature lists? (Longhorn anyone?)

And I think the slow-selling webOS also can open 2 apps side-by-side, and smoothly swipes between apps.

Microsoft has been trying to get to a REAL Tablet experience like the one coming out with Win 8 for a long time.

Yes, the operative word being "trying".
Let's hope they manage it this time ;P.

They aren't copying anyone. So get that though your head

Hey... maybe they should.

So YES ...Microsoft IS good at making tablets

Yes, as they have demonstrated time and again.

I actually like the interface to Windows 8, but I gotta admit that Windows does seem to follow many of Apple's trends :p.

There are also some rumours going around that Xbox games might be playable on Windows, if that is the case, then amazing :p That would easily beat out the Mac App Store for me..

(Direct-)Xbox is running Windows. If MSFT wanted to have the games running, it would.

----------

That would be funny (Microsoft handing Apple 30% of its Windows revenue). Seriously, though, I wouldn't be surprised if it's just officially called the "Store" or "Windows Store" to avoid trademark disputes with Apple.

Didnt that claim get thrown out yet? It will, you know...

(p.s. Even funnier would be people with mac downloading W8 to get rid of Lion).

On the tablet issue -

I had a Compaq Pen Computer/Tablet in the mid 90s. And it was GREAT. There's a whole misnomer that previous OSes weren't usable on a tablet and as someone that used a device for about 18 months I would have to strongly disagree. And that was with Windows 3.1. Compared to today's standard - it was bulkier, slower, etc - but that was a limitation of the hardware back then. It performed just as well as my desktop system.

Either people never tried/used a tablet before Apple made one, weren't alive, or have this fantasy built up that there were no usable tablets before the iPad.

You'd be wrong.

Stealing from Apple since the beginning and continuing to do so in 2011 and beyond!

"App Store" on Linux predates Apples use. Giving consumers what they want (and what is feasible to give them) is not stealing.

----------

Every time I see an article like this, I really do want to give Microsoft the benefit of the doubt when it seems like they're following in Apple's footsteps like some sick puppy. Then I remind myself how they've been doing it all along. What they really need is some of their own ideas.

parcs footsteps you mean?

You make yourself look like an Apple fanboy.

Are you unable to see any good in a Microsoft product?

Yes, it is looking quite good. Is it shipping yet?

Oh my god... Windows 8 looks like a completely new OS. Where is the windows button? The wallpaper? What's going on? And way too colourful for my taste.

Looks like i'll be sticking with Windows 7!

This is the "web application platform graphical user interface" or something microsoft-esque like that. The old W7 desktop is still there, and you can choose to split screens or just run the desktop at any time.

What a shocker.

Microsoft: The Freedom To Innovate. (TM)

can not come with anything new to make money on just like they did with Windows they will try to steal it from Apple, however Apple is a much more powerful player this time around, should be interesting.

Windows 8

I still have not purchased 7 nor will I be buying anymore MS products.

I believe it should be called Program Store for Windows. But i agree Apple doesn't deserve exclusive rights to that term.

Google "Windows applications", i got over 100 million hits. Applications is not something Apple did invent.

Your loss, W7 is great!

----------

I have a WP7 Samsung FOCUS that I pop my SIM in every once in a while. It's neat, but not ready for my full time phone. Has a lot of promise.

I can't, however, imagine this blocky themed OS working in any professional organization. Microsoft's key challenge will be making this OS adaptable to businesses. If it's like a computer version of WP7, they will fail miserably. WP7 works great as a social phone OS that's slick and interesting, but it will not translate well to a professional desktop OS for business.

I want WP7 to succeed and I (like many of you) use Windows for work. I just think MSFT may be trying to be a bit too fancy pants with Windows8. Careful guys...keep it relevant to businesses. Two versions, perhaps (Windows after hours / Windows productivity?). :D

There are already "two versions" in the sense of two graphical interfaces. MSFT knows what they are doing. Dont worry.

They should should call it the "Application Store". It's not the "App Store", yet most people will likely call it that.

Apple can't probably sue for "Application Store" (no legal background whatsoever), and they sure can't sue everyone one.

Protecting myself: Not pro or anti anything... just sayin'. And I haven't read the BG or SJ dick measuring posts before, so this might have been already mentioned.

What if Microsoft hits it out of the park with Windows 8? What if they listen the input of the mass beta users like they did on Windows 7 and come up with another great product? They certainly have the brain power to do this, the question is will they? Will they take the time to do it right and polish all the rough edges or will they rush it out half baked? Hopefully they are watching at all the tablet disasters due to rushing out unfinished products.

Apple invented everything, didn't you know that? Steve came up with the theory of relativity, not Einstein. He built the Sphynx and the Great Pyramids too. He is one amazing dude.

From what i've gathered W8 is basically an improved W7 + this interface. Should be even more polished than W7 in other words.

----------

And on a slightly un-related note, it almost looks as though MS is trying to beat Apple to the unified-across-all-devices OS ... Interesting.

They most likely will. Basically you could run W8 on mobile devices if you wanted straight up, but we'll have to wait a year or so for Wp8 which will mark the point of full convergence (we will see some apps-across-all-devices straight up though, as its based on HTML5 and/or common frameworks)

----------

Knowing Microsoft, they Will give it a long name.

Microsoft Windows 8 Program Store.

They call them programs while apple calls them Apps.

My reasoning behind this is they have Microsoft Windows Phone 7 Series. That's one hell of a long name.

The scratched Series! But yes, MSFT has a weird thing with these names. Its like its an internal joke of theirs or something.

It's the future guys... in 10 years most software will be downloadable only and cds will have disappeared. Then what are the non-Apple companies supposed to do in order to allow their users download any software? Of course, they will have to have their own ‘app stores’. They can name them differently, but the concept stays the same. Are we going to prohibit the adoption of such a model because Apple was the first to have an app store?

Except they were not first. Closer to last, really.

Virtualization software, here I come! :D
