They dealt with 3 Blackberry outages in a year.

Good for you. You've been lucky, do count your blessings. In my business environment, we use Verizon, AT&T and Sprint. Each have had their significant flubs in the past 4 years we've used them all. These things happen.

You know, I would honestly think that they would be justified in asking to be let of out of their contracts. Maybe they should call and ask, and follow through.

They are when they refuse to let you do what was advertised, or what would be normally allowed with a non-Verizon interface.

I must say, the iPhone is the most functional "brick" I've ever carried.

"the most functional "brick" I've ever carried." - Really? Congratulations on your very first cell phone purchase. You'll have to continue to let us know how this works out for you. Again, congrats.

All I can say to those of you with problems with ATT is, welcome to the next two years. ATT is CONSTANTLY having issues and blaming it on other people

I'm getting kinda tired of this. Really.

I'm not here to defend AT&T or Apple. I've been screwed by AT&T mobility before, and their customer service is lacking.

But the truth is, Cingular/AT&T is the only carrier I'd be on, in the United States. It's the lesser of all the evils, IMO.

And supmango, I have had ATT for more than 2 years. And they are NOT constantly having issues with their service. I've never had a dropped call (until the iPhone 3G), and I've never had bad call quality. I've always had full signal where the map says I would have it and in general, I've got my money's worth of cellular service from ATT. If you constantly have an issue, take it to customer support.

And I've set it before, and I'll say it again - I've had a 3G device on the ATT network since January 2007. It's always been reliable and as fast if not faster than Verizon's EV-DO network.

I'll admit I'm a little bit disappointed in the speed, but hey, when every sundress-wearing hipster chick has an iPhone 3G, I know why.

And you know what, I'd rather deal with the so so speed and Apple's Mobile OS X software vs. Verizon and it's crap red theme and 'get it now' music player.

Bottom line is, you gotta pay to play. If you don't like it, return it.

WISH I COULD... if they would let me out of the ETF I would return it tonight.
I've had an iPod touch for a long time and quite enjoy all the features on wifi...I was falsely mislead that the speeds were "wifi-like" and I could do the same things with the iPhone.
AND verizon phones work great once you jailbreak them to free you from the shackles of their crippled interface. The problem is that NO cell phone company (AT&T included) wanted to reliquinish the ability to charge users for the little things they buy on the internet...but that has already happened with the iPhone and now Verizon, sprint and T-mobile will all have to follow suit or lose customers.

Sorry dude, no one can understand sarcastic comments when it makes little to no sense.

Very true.

I will offer this: I've had Sprint for... what, maybe 10 years or so with the last 4 or 5 being on a data plan. Never really had major issues with them, aside from the occasional de-sync b/w their servers and my phone (who knows why; that's their problem).

FWIW, AT&T's data service, and that's what I'm sure most are really sour with, leave a lot to be desired. Voice service has been solid for me here in NYC. It's just the issues with data... :(

Although now that service has been "restored" I'm sure this thread can be closed or what not.

You have a mouth right? Use it. Call AT&T and complain.
Complain, complain, and complain some more. Ask for the higher up, and insist to be let off your contract. It's been done.

Me? I haven't been misled because I knew what to expect.

Outage was iPhone Specific

Hmmm amazing how this outage only affected the NorthEast according to AT&T and was not iPhone specific, well how come every other PDA / Smart phone device carried by co-workers and family were NOT affected ? All the co-workers I know that carry BB's and Palms were not affected this morning.

Just another AT&T Lie, and they want to charge for tethering

I hear you. I agree they all have issues. No carrier is perfect. We have all the services here as well. All I was saying in the original post is it would be nice to have a choice of vendor. We can get a BB or Winmob phone on any carrier.

Two of our remote users did call AT&T - and got even more frustrated. I guess they weren't good enough to get the credits other users are getting.

I knew you would mention wifi. :) Problem is some users just don't have wifi when they are mobile. Hence the need for Edge/3g/EVDO.

As far as Verizon - we are not using Blackberry's - we are stuck on Windows Mobile. We haven't had any data issues but we have had limited issues with Activesync choking on some emails and calendar appts.

Did the Verizon Blackberry's lose complete network service or did you just lose e-mail service? Did RIM go down or Verizon? I heard of the multiple RIM outages last year.

That's nice. Or, I could buy another smartphone on any other GSM carrier here in the US (Cingular/ATT if I want to be overcharged for service, or Tmobile if I want no service) and do all those things already out of the box, because...

O wait. ATT/T-mobile does not block out the features of the phone. O yeah. Sorry.

Data seems to be back. I just tried safari and was able to browse. Anyone else in/near Philly seeing the same?

Are you serious? "Verizon and it's crap red theme and 'get it now' music"??? Are you telling me the iPhone 3G is your first actual "smartphone"? Real Class Smartphones don't have that red crap - they have their own OS, usually called Palm, Windows Mobile or BlackBerry. That Verizon OS is indeed crap and as such cannot be compared to the iPhone as the iPhone is touting itself as a smartphone-class phone and not a "flipper". But you're not comparing apples to remotely apples when you compare Apple Mobile and Verizon's "red themed" phones.

I called AT&T back as they asked me to once the data was working again. The CSR said they were authorized to give a 50% of the monthly data plan credit to those affected by the outage.

A couple other co-workers have also called and gotten the credit.

Not bad.... I guess? Never tested it before.

This was midtown in NYC just now.

Am I alive? Is this forum for real?

Is the iPhone your first real "smartphone"? If it is, I highly, highly, highly suggest that you and everyone else on here with the impression that everyone else's carrier and phones are "locked down" and limited to "verizon-red interface" do some friggin research and take a look at the OTHER smart phones out there and check out what they can do - you. will. be. shocked.

Palm's Treo line offers the Windows Mobile OS as well as their dated Palm OS.
BlackBerry has their BlackBerry OS.
and so on and so on.

It's amazing to see how many people think that it's "iPhone or no phone". There really are choices out there on all the carriers. And chances are, there's a phone that will impress you more or better suit your needs than the iPhone.

My Tilt was affected the same as the iPhone but the Blackberry was not. Probably because Blackberry doesn't go thru AT&T machines while everything else does. Palm...eh, who cares?

Sabotage by Verizon. They're just jealous because AT&T has the iPhone3G. :D
All of the other carriers are jealous. I just feel sorry for the poor people that bought Samsung Instincts before the iPhone3G came out and now they are stuck in a two-year agreement.

not sure exactly what they did but now I get 3g service inside my building (3bars) which never happened before during the day. I also did a speed test which came in at 874 kps. (central jersey)

I am now getting 3g in my building as well. I am west of Boston, Massachusetts. I was only getting edge before.

Just called AT&T and spoke with a CSR, what a bunch of liars. I told the lady I've haven't been able to get any data today (3G and EDGE). She checked the towers around me (fairfield county, CT) and said there haven't been any problems within 125miles of me for the last month. She said the only problems were due to the hurricanes down south.

She said there was nothing she could do for me, expect call apple and complain to them... haha. I don't know why I ever switched to this phone, even though its great ;)

It's 3:17 in MA and my service is now restored. Ironically, I just got back from the Apple Store. Before seeing this thread I had made an appointment at the Genius Bar (for 2:00). At that time, I still had no data service. The genius was of little help, just pretty much shrugged it off. But I mentioned my 3G stability issues and that I usually just left the phone on EDGE. He told me to go to AT&T and get my SIM card swapped out; that usually fixes connection issues.

I just got home and called AT&T. The woman who answered told me there were no connectivity issues in MA; nothing was down. After I got off the phone, I opened Safari and sure enough, everything was up and running. I checked out "TestMyiPhone" and my download EDGE speed came out to ".95 times faster than EDGE." My 3G speed couldn't be tested because my connection kept kicking back to EDGE.

Myyyyyy, and they say Crackberry addicts get cranky without their data connectivity!

I LOL'd. Especially since I've been using cell phones since likely before you learned how to type.

Well let me tell you about a little something called the iPod touch...

Can't make phone calls or send SMS, which we could still do this morning. if you're going to have a witty retort, please double check that it's factually correct.
