I think it is somewhat of a comment on the smartphone market overall too. The market is essentially saturated, and people are holding onto devices longer since speed / software compatibility / and features have more or less leveled off.
Good educated analysis, and I can agree.
Look at how many phones being released just this month. It’s crazy. The Chinese are refreshing their multiple SKUs at less than 12-month rate. It’s almost if you want to buy a phone, there are too many to choose from. Add on to the fact that for most people, even phones from 2 to 3 years ago are still sufficient. Heck, look at the 6S and how well it is performing today with iOS 12.

You know how apple can stop the bleeding. Make iOS 13 only work for the iPhone X and higher and only work with macOS 10.14. And make the App Store to only work with iOS 13 and all older devices won't be able to access newer apps So ppl will have to buy new devices to be compatible with macOS and iOS. Problem solved.

So why did people buy more iPhones in 2018 than 2017 at an average price of $750, up from $650?

I sometimes wonder if there is a net work of Kuo-Nikkei-shortsellers. Some kind of kickback scheme between Kuo, editors of Nikkei, apple bloggers and hedge fund shorts exist. The timings, tv appearance of certain fund managers on CNBC etc. work like clockwork.

Darn, I am starting to sound like Elon Musk, aren’t I?

Just bought an iphone 8 last week after my SE kicked the bucket... do not like the newer phones one bit. Would really like an SE 2. You hear us, Apple? Please and thanks.

Why is it whenever apple is expected to sell less items, either Tim Cook or other analysts blame either a trade war, or some other reason, but never say that the consumer is slowly waking up to see that apple's old tech isn't enough to sell as much as it used to?

Perfectly put. Lack of headphone jack, limited ecosystem, andriod world dominance is never mentioned

The Xr is ugly as hell in person. Felt fat and thick, with giant bezels that online videos and photos don't portray accurately.

I sincerely think it's one of the ugliest iPhones to date.

The phone reminds me of when you put too much of a stroke around an object in Photoshop or Illustrator. Ugh...no thanks. Going with the OnePlus 6T this year, let's see what you have for me at reasonable prices next year Apple.

it does feel a little unpolished even compared to the 8 and 7's. It does feel good in your hand though. Not like a xs or max with the stainless sides though.

I honestly think the 8 Plus looks better, and that has bigger bezels! Go figure!

The 8 Plus is the epitome of that generation's iPhone design though. Apple used that design to death, but no doubt the 8 Plus is the best iteration. Fitting for the last of its kind.

yes it does. Even though the screen is basically edge to edge they pulled in the sides too much. The more premium phones did it right and could even be a little smaller but the xr just feels like a Chinese knockoff to me. I dont mind the thickness or the weight but the screen just bothers me too much.

Great iPhone, that is the one I use now:)

This. I was a regular annual iPhone updater up until the 6 plus, then I stopped because it wasn't worth it and the prices were getting daft. I have upgraded to an XR but that will probably do me for another five years at least. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

just curious if in that five years if you will replace your battery. I think for me i would after 3 years.

Apple should have kept a 4" screen phone like the 5SE. I still have a 5SE and its still fast and useful. When companies stop listening to the people..HOUSTON we have a problem.
There is no such model as 5SE. It is just iPhone SE.

The 5SE is a counterfeit model selling in Thailand for $50

I compared the XR to the 8 plus in store.

The XR screen is a disgrace.

They have the manufactures of the 8 plus screens already making high PPI LCD for four years. How pathetic they went back under 400PPI for a new model. Shameful.

I don't understand how it could not be a better screen because according to Apple it's better then LCD... It's Liquid Retina!

The Chinese own the supply chain, so they can do this sort of thing. However, this was an early problem Samsung experienced when they were cannibalizing their own mobile business with too many releases. I think at some point, they were releasing like 3-4 phones. Users would hesitate on swapping their phones, and Samsung would end up having too much of a surplus of their phones unsold. They of course have somewhat course corrected this now. I wouldn't be surprised if the Chinese end up landing in a similar situation.

The only reason Im going with this phone is because the LCD screen doesn’t blast your eyeballs out with PWM like the OLED screens. Total fail on Apple’s part to pit a screen on XS and Max that gives people headaches. Unbelievable
I've had the X for 11 months. Never had a headache of any kind since getting it.

My problem with the newest batch of phones is that they're too thick and too heavy. I would love an SE2; I don't need a case for it and I barely notice it in my pocket. Maybe if the newer phones were thinner and lighter I'd be tempted for the extra screen space. Maybe one day they'll get there but I'm holding on to my dollars until the SE2 or a thinner/lighter XS.
This is often overlooked. While the phones are huge, they're also really heavy comparatively. The XS Max weighs nearly as much as TWO iPhone SEs.

Yeah, if you haven't noticed, iOS is a pretty big reason to stay. I guess you have noticed...since you are staying.

The Pocophone is a piece of crap. Unless you're poor, you're not going to be interested in $300 saving over the life of a device you own for 2-3 years and is in your hand hours per day. And if you're poor, you likely didn't have an iPhone in the first place.

I doubt very seriously anyone who had an iPhone is switching to a freaking Pocophone. They'll maybe switch to a high end Android, but even few will do that because they cost similar dollars and run an inferior OS.
I switched from being a long time iPhone user to an Honor 8 when Apple couldn't deliver an iPhone 7 plus in jet black.

What a great device and it opened my eyes to how good many other manufacturers have become. Keeping features many people want (like TouchID and headphone jack), innovating way more than Apple the last couple of years, no comparison really, yet much lower prices than Apple. Apple has alienated too many of its core customers by trying to be "courageous".

After the Honor came P10 Plus and P20 Pro and soon Mate 20 Pro (better overall than any iPhone yet priced as the cheapest Xr over here in Europe (Sweden in my case). To me, Apple has lost its ways. However, I'll gladly come back if they start making high end phones, filled with features people want and that truly represent value despite the high prices, like they used to.

Huawei has put my focus back on smart phones; great devices at prices that truly represent value, that's why I've started upgrading way more than before, it's just so much fun!

Edit: And I still have an iPhone 6 just to keep in touch with iOS, but it rarely gets used.

Welcome to the commodity smartphone market. No lines for the XR, except in Japan where Apple was giving away free shirts.
