I'm actually pretty excited about the idea of touch ID going away. Living in the mid-west we deal with gloves as a major part of wardrobes from mid November until mid March.

This makes no sense as Apple has just put Touch ID into their Macbook Pros. If they were going the facial recognition route then why wouldn't they have just put that in macOS instead?

It's not a strategic decision based upon technology, it would be a business decision based upon getting revenue in for 2017.

They will definitely include an under screen fingerprint sensor in the XS if it misses the X.

I think he's basically suggesting that ApplePay will you some sort of facial recognition (due to lack of fingerprint sensor).

And HOW would that work? Often, more than not, my phone is angled away from my face. Drive through restaurants, cafes where their reader is up on a counter etc...I can't physically be looking at anywhere but the side of my phone at the mo in about 75% of Apple Pay transactions. Facial recognition will not work for me. And I take it also that in a darkened room I will need to turn a light on first, to be recognised, or use the physical button on the side of the phone and PIN? No touch ID, no 8 for me.

Touch ID has become an integral part of Apple's ecosystem. Getting rid of it would be very controversial.

Having a fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone doesn't seem like the worst thing in the world anymore.

Apple got rid of the headphone socket, and claimed it was because of 'courage', and you couldn't get more controversial, well apart from the Mac Pro they ignored for three years and kept charging a high premium price for. Or the 12,000 dollar plus watch with the exact same internals as their 300 dollar watch..

Controversy and Apple have gone hand in hand a few times of late.

Unless there is something else we don't know and which can effectively replace Touch ID, I find this very hard to believe.

Touch ID is deeply integrated into iOS and critical to other functionalities such as Apple Pay which couldn't work without it (and I doubt facial recognition could perform as well or better than a figerprint sensor for than use case).

Removing it with not serious alternative on a flagship model seems more than unlikely.

Do you use Samsung pay? If so, isn't it weir to hold your phone while putting the finger on the back and get it really close to the POS?
As someone who unlocks its device while is resting on the table I'd find the sensor on the back annoying sometimes, but I could get used to it.
TouchID embedded into the display would be awesome though, putting it on the back would look like a compromise, "we tried to put it under the display but didn't manage to, so here's the new location..."

I use Samsung pay all the time, just put you ur finger on the scanner to activate it, you don't have to hold your finger on the reader the whole time. I also have retina reader enabled as well and that has been pretty reliable also, but I don't think that Apple will include that option.

I'm not singling you out personally, just using your post as a jumping off point because you imply TouchID will be moved to the back.

So what if does move, what do people want? If it's currently technically impossible for Apple to implement this under the screen what do you want them to do? Employ a team of sky wizards to fix it?

If they remove it entirely, perhaps going with facial recognition, people moan.

If they retain it, but move it to the back, people moan.

Please anyone who's moaned about this share with The World your solution that Apple has clearly overlooked (and no I'm not interested in blind optimism and wishful thinking that it "can never happen").

I think the solution is delay it until they've got it working. If that means waiting until early next year for the phone that's a sacrifice I'd be more than fine with (I'm sure Tim Cook and the share holders would think otherwise though).

Perhaps they will sell a dongle with TouchID?
You can connect that to your iP8 when you want or need to use a fingerprint.

Sorry, but there is no way "iPhone 8" will not have Touch ID. It has become a hallmark of iPhone functionality (and fingerprint sensing for phones in general these days). It's been baked throughout iOS and apps. It's pretty ubiquitous.

I mean really, we're to believe the iPhone 7S and 7S Plus will continue to have Touch ID (they most certainly will), but the "iPhone 8" won't? This prediction doesn't even warrant a serious consideration. Apple would never fragment iOS like that.

It is possible Apple could solely use face recognition. Just because it's flakey with the S8 doesn't mean Apple's will be the same. I'm sure it will work even in the dark as they've probably thought that through, and will probably be way more accurate with the new sensors. I'm thinking a combo of Touch ID (placed elsewhere) and facial recognition though. Touch ID will eventually be replaced by facial recognition so they'll focus more on the latter this time around while keeping Touch ID that's still widely used around the OS? These are just my guesses.

I am going on record that Apple WILL include Touch ID. Let me know if you need me to comment on any other features. I have inside sources just as Kuo does and mine are actually right. Also, I will go ahead and confirm another rumor and that is that Apple will release another iPhone.

For me: No Touch ID = No Sale
But... what if.... when you hold the phone up to the credit card terminal it automatically activated the facial recognition feature and authentication you just as fast (or faster) than TouchID?

6 user. I have no issues with iOS10.

You must like to reload every Safari page or App when you multitask.
Why are people saying Ming-Chi Kuo is some random guy? He's been providing pretty solid information for years. I guess people are just in denial..

What is your definition of "solid"? He's been wrong more times than he's been right.

6 user and I absolutely hate having 1GB RAM. Use Facebook. Open Safari and do a Google Image Search. Return to FB and the article you were reading is gone, replaced by the refreshed timeline, because the app was unloaded from the device's puny RAM. Ridiculous.

I don't think they'll remove TouchID but it may not be under the screen. If it's not ready then it's not ready.
Rumored Samsung Note 8 won't have their fingerprint scanner under the screen either.

I can live with it on the back if it's not placed next to the camera and in more of the location of the Pixel. I normally keep my phone facedown so putting my finger there when picking it up won't be a big deal. Putting it on the side or as part of one the buttons will probably work ok also.

What I would like to know is if the iPhone Edition is going to be a one off design or if they plan to switch the whole line to that style next year. If it's a one off I'll probably get it regardless.

If they plan to make one next year or switch to that design I probably will hold off so that they can fix the bugs I'm sure this edition will have.

Why has the premise that the lock button services as the touch-id surface been so quickly dismissed, or has it? All the recent mock-ups show the button size has been increased from the current design, so maybe that explains why. I'd rather see it put there than on the back, and I also don't believe it will be removed completely because of the Apple Pay requirement. I've always thought the new screen technology(OLED), plus the incorporation of the on-screen home button AND the incorporation of touch-id below the screen, was too ambiguous for Apple, who normally implement new design elements piece-wise to ensure as few of failures as possible.
