"Ming-Chi Kuo Predicts iPhone 8 Will Omit Touch ID Entirely"

That's a click-bait headline. At no time did Ming-Chi Kuo state that. He only said TouchID would not be embedded in the screen.

While I agree that it was a misleading (potentially click-bait) headline, I think the author was making a supposition based on the available facts, which is that Kuo said there will be no Touch ID on the display while previous rumors of Touch ID on the back or power button have been previous debunked. Therefore, it must be that there is no Touch ID and Apple will use something else to unlock the phone.

Having said that, the author should have made it very clear that this was, in fact, a supposition. But then the author could also very well point to the name of this blog "macrumors" by saying it was only a rumor. You're right that none of what Kuo said presupposes a lack of Touch ID, but the facts are not in favor of it.

My own take is that Apple will find a way to include Touch ID or risk having large swaths of potential buyers leave in droves for either iPhone 7s (with its lower margins) or something else. Touch ID has become such a useful and popular feature that they would be foolish not to include it.

That just means you weren't looking at sources for all of the CORRECT rumors.
This person is one of the most accurate sources of Apple rumors. If he was ever wrong, it'd just mean that between the rumor and the release, Apple decided to change the product.

If he says no Touch ID on the screen, then no touch ID on the screen. This just means that they'll integrate touch ID into an oversized power button. ;)

I always thought it would be fun article to have a roundup of all the analysts and who was right and who was wrong about any of the releases. Kuo would certainly be on top.

The whole idea to enter your iPhone in front of your face to to enable a login / password activation is really a no no for me, despite the fact Apple might state that it's: "amaaaaaaazing", "unprecedented", "magic", and that it took courage...

Apple following Samsung and moving TouchId to the back is almost as absurd as them removing it completely. Unlike Samsung, Apple has a usability reputation to protect - putting TouchId elsewhere on the device is a big step backwards from a usability perspective.

Everyone keeps saying this "Ming-Chi Kuo" has the highest accuracy - facts don't get created by mere repetition of a statement. What is the factual basis for your statement?
I agree. He gets SOME things right, but I think he is very overrated concerning his overall record. I have never seen anyone perform an analysis of how accurate he has been over time.

Well someone is bound to be right. :p I like the teal from the iPad Pro skin in the dummy model image. Would I buy a phone just for that...no, but I'd buy a leather case pronto. :D

I'm ignoring most of the iP8 speculation largely because I am not in the market for a new iPhone, and am trying to stick with an SE when I am ready to move on from the 7+.

I honestly would not upgrade if this was true. FRONT TouchID is one of those no-turning-back features that you just can't replace unless something like "brain waves" comes in. Facial scanning is a gimmick and will always be a second-best option as long as you need to look / be in front of the iphone. Even if it was 100% accurate and instantaneous you would need to face the camera, and that alone would make TouchID more convenient.

Cant believe this...or better, i dont want to believe this.

I made this prediction before on this forum and I'll make it again.

The entire screen will act as TID meaning you can use more than one finger for even greater security. We might even see it on both sides but at least the viewer facing side.

You could literally unlock it "all thumbs" and be ok ;)

After reviewing other sites' headlines on this topic, MR does have the most click-bait of them all.

Yeah, I just read a piece from 9to5Mac that seemed a bit more reasoned. He did assume that Kuo was also saying "no" to the Touch ID, but he also didn't seem to think omitting it was plausible (siting Apple Pay). He actually put forth the idea that a Touch ID on the screen is still doable based on how Apple designed the Touch Bar on the MBP. I would put forth the idea that this could have been Apples plan B should embedding Touch ID prove technically challenging (though I suspect it has less to do with technical difficulty and more to do with maintaining profit margins).

Here is the 9to5Mac piece if you're interested: https://9to5mac.com/2017/07/03/touch-id-iphone-8-options-opinion/

Seriously, Macrumors slow news day?

I thought this was a legitimate rumors web site, not "random person with no inside knowledge just rambles guesses" web/blog posts.

Ming Chi Kuo is the most accurate analyst of predicted Apple products. He isn't always right (as with any of them) but he is well regarded to be the best.

This is Apple, good products but they really do not care what customers want or think or feel or expect; as soon as they encounter technical issues with a new design (hardware or software) they simply remove something and tell you that you don't need it anyway. Period.

You have the choice, they do not force you to buy anything.

Good question. The bigger question is this, what is the guys reputation? why don't Macrumors actually mention what the persons reputation is like by comparing what they've said vs. what eventually happened?

He appears very frequently in news reports on this site, and is regarded to be the most accurate analyst.

You weren't going to be typing on the iPhone while it is on a table anyways because of the camera bump.

Yes I will. I guarantee you that the protective case that most people will buy will be thicker than the camera bump, so the phone will lay flat.

Leaving TouchID out would be a huge mistake.

We'll have to see if this is true or not.

I would be actually happy if this crappy Touch ID goes away. Doesn’t work 70% of the time anyway if your fingers are not perfectly dry.
I have found this to be true as well. After having a Touch ID phone for a couple of years I recently became more casual with the phone and noticed this wet hand issue. While I don't run into this issue often, it is disappointing when it happens.

He isn't random. He has an excellent track record. Most consider him to be the top analyst when it comes to supply chain.

Based on the fact that his predictions are most always correct. What more do you want? You stating that he isn't doesn't change the fact that he is.

Most recently he predicted the 10.5 inch iPad Pro, a new 12.9-inch iPad Pro and a standard 9.7-inch iPad update. He was correct on all accounts.

But, he has been correct FOR YEARS.
