It also sounds like people who have the 29W MacBook charger with a Lightning to USB-C cable who use it to charge The 12.9 inch iPad Pro twice as quickly will be able to charge the new iPhones with it much more quickly.
I use the 29W charger to charge my iPhone all the time. The bigger question is will Apple sell new iPad Pros with stupid 12W charger? That is so ridiculous.

As i've continuously said, they are not switching to USB-C. Not only does switching make no sense in terms of the majority of consumers, but Apple has expressed their connector strategy in the past and as seen by their products. It's possible they may add it to iPad Pro models but that's unlikely.

Chances are they'll make "Official " USB-C Apl charging cable (with special detect circuitry) that other normal USB-C won't work like HP on the XPS13...bummer and a very Apl thing to do.

Going to be fun charging all the new modern accessories too Pencil/airpods ....

In essence today apl consumers are paying for apl's proprietary ways remember 30-Pin? Fiasco.
At least someone there finally got a clue as the industry started blowing past them on every front.

Not sure what's more exciting... retaining lightning but USB-C capable, or quick charging.

All three iPhones rumored to be launched in 2017 will retain Lightning connectors with the addition of USB-C Power Delivery for faster charging, including the all-new OLED model, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Lightning-iPhone-7.png

An excerpt from his latest research note obtained by MacRumors:Kuo expects Apple to retain the Lightning port given its slimmer design compared to a USB-C port, MFi Program licensing income, and the fact that USB-C's high-speed data transmission is "still a niche application" for iPhone.

Kuo's prediction comes just two days after The Wall Street Journal seemingly reported that at least one upcoming iPhone model would have a USB-C port instead of a Lightning connector, but its wording was vague.

I can't wait for this to happen. And then the sheer disappointment / confusion of everyone trying to use their 2016 MB/MBP USB C cables to transfer data.

I'm so disappointed that Apple didn't include the a data cable with those computers, consumers have literally no way to know whether their USB C cable transmits data or not.

That's great. I pay $0 a month tethering to my Mac. Also iCloud is slow and not always reliable. Pass. But if it's so cheap then why can't Apple supply customers with more than a joke of 5GB. I mean they are set to ask a rumored $1K for the next flagship iPhone. Are you telling me they can't chip in another 95GB? Or a .50 USB-C adapter?
Why don't you pay a paltry $3 per month to protect the data on your $800 iPhone?

I don't have auto update on because I don't always want to update an app the minute it's released).

I wish it worked that well! I have it on and whenever I manually force an app store update check there's always many updates to download.

Worst still if you only use your iPad once every 3-5 weeks or less it doesn't update anything automatically even if its docked that entire time, when you unlock it, it'll start downloading 80 updates, sigh.

Ok, this is a plausible rumor that actually makes sense.

Getting rid of the Lightning port would have been singlehandedly the worst decision they could have made. However, the audio port needed to go, let's be honest (for all you iOS haters out there).

Phil Schiller made a point on stage during the iPhone 7 announcement that there are millions of Lightning connected accessories in the world. Why would Apple give that up? I'm all for USB-C but as the end connection to my computer or power source, but NOT on iOS devices.

Anyone heard of Benson Leung? He is an engineer at Google who reviews USB-C cables on Amazon and other sites. There are a number of reviews from him where he slams the manufacturer for producing a poor product that is either a fire hazard or shorts out the device because of overload. USB-C needs to be better regulated before it is widely adopted.

Apple has the strictest requirements for cable quality. Can you imagine people going to an Apple store with their iPhone complaining how a USB-C cable shorted their device? Yeah I can't either. That is why Apple will continue to use Lightning for their most popular product.

The Lightning port is here to stay for a long time. USB-A isn't.
There are plenty of poor quality lightning cables that say "Made for iPhone" but are not.

Lightning is a good port because Apple retains control over it. Quality control. With USB-C, one could use anyone’s cable, whether or not it is of high quality. At least with MFi, you have a better chance of an accessory working properly and not blowing up your phone.

Oops, edited...you do make good points but I agree with Chupa Chupa we still need wire charging and syncing as an option for now. I do iCloud backups update my apps on wifi usually but still consider the encrypted Mac backups to be my main backup.

iTunes wifi sync is an encrypted backup directly to the Mac. It's also fully automated, and I never have to worry about it. If I need to sync something immediately I can invoke a sync cycle directly from my iOS device. It syncs all of my iOS devices securely without ever having to worry about it.

I haven't plugged an iOS device into my Mac in years to sync them, and have no complaints.

Those cables exist today. If Apple includes it in the box they will likely leave out the USB-A to Lightning cable. So lots of people will have to buy the older cable separately.

I think they can assume everyone has lightning to USBa cables lying around. Start putting a Lightning to USBc in the box.

Why don't you update apps over wifi?

Because the WiFi in my house is inconsistent and prone to dropouts and I don't want to spare the bandwidth. I'd rather just tether and be able to control the process and timing 100%.

Why don't you pay a paltry $3 per month to protect the data on your $800 iPhone?

Because I can pay $0 for the same backup. I didn't say I don't backup. I said I do tethered backups. I don't want ANOTHER monthly subscription. Enough already.

You sound like a car salesman... Your beautiful new $40K car. You should get XYZ unnecessary option to protect it. Heh.

BTW the data on my phone is worth more than the material cost of the phone itself. Silly argument you make. Everyone should backup but it doesn't matter what method they use.

1. OLED wasn't mature and Apple has to manufacture 50M+ of them.
That alone says something many people don't get. Apple doesn't adopt tech into their products unless they developed it themselves or the third party tech has been perfected to a decent enough level.

At least that's what I see.

I wish they went fully USB-C, but perhaps they want to avoid exploding phones/electrocution lawsuits.

It's nice to see Apple catching up with other manufacturers: OLED, edge-to-edge display, big batteries, fast charging and wireless charging have all been available on Android phones for a few years now.

Here we go again.
Like mp3 players existed before iPod
Like phones existed before iPhone
Like multytouch existed before
Like tablets existed before iPad
Like touch ID existed before iPhone 5s
Where does this end? What is it with Android fans mentality who thinks to be first is always the best?

I'd rather see the new iPad Pros go to USB-C, makes more sense there, will garner less outrage, and fits them in with the "these are edging ever so slightly closer to the Mac" stance.

What is it with apl fans that do the same?
2006

He headed up Surface Hub 100-point multitouch, ran Perceptive Pixel sold it to Microsoft
Yet most Apl folks think Steve Jobs invented Multi-touch..he did not. Jeff did. But Iphone was first yada yada.

Ming-Chi must have a red phone on his desk that only rings from Apple. Didn't take long for Apple to shoot down the USB-C rumor. I wonder how fast fast is? Apple will be able to advertise "fast" charging to combat their rivals, but will it be as fast as Quick Charge 3.0, etc. I think not unless they increase the diameter of the USB-C-Lightning cable.
