There are a lot of Pro audio devices that require ports so going completely wireless would completely alienate those users and force them to remain on older devices or switch to android.

true, but the issue with those phones is the word "android".
Software is key.
Lol, my iPhone gets worse with every update. My success rate with Touch ID has gone down significantly as well. Apple doesn't take their time with software like they used too.

Ming-Chi must have a red phone on his desk that only rings from Apple. Didn't take long for Apple to shoot down the USB-C rumor.
You might be on to something there. It does seem the changing port fire was put out pretty damn quick.

These were all concepts and I remember watching them on youtube and waiting for them to hit the shops. But it didn't happen. Name one consumer product that had it before iPhone. I don't give a flying monkey how many fantasies tech companies through around. I salute the ones who make them reality and available for me to buy.

The IBM Simon was the first phone with a touchscreen in 1992
FingerWorks, a gesture recognition company, produced a line of multi-touch products in 1998, including the iGesture Pad and TouchStream keyboard. (apl acquired)

So yes Apl brought to market the first popular Multi-Touch phone device, want a cookie?

I hope that also means fast data transfer. As the iPhone's internal storage increases updating apps has become quite a chore. (I still tether to my Mac and I don't have auto update on because I don't always want to update an app the minute it's released).
Hello Chupa, Chupa.
Actually, you can control both Apps downloads, and Kernel Updates, off the Settings>iTunes&App Stores controls.

This is what I do too. And, as you do, I stage all updates to my MBP first. USB 2.0 rates (480mb nominal) are not much of a problem though, as my provider's connection is at least an order of magnitude slower.

I hope this is wrong. usb-c is now the standard on Mac laptops. It should soon become the standard on Mac desktops. Why not unify the family with iOS devices?

And this is the wrong end of the cable for usb-c. Cars, hotels, etc. have usb-a. Put usb-c on the iPhone and usb-a on the charger end. That would make so much more sense to me. Then over time move us to usb-c and usb-c, both ends.

Duh. Or the next best option is to at least move everything to usb-c now, both ends. That would be forward looking even if currently a mismatch with all the common usb-a outlets out there.

But, regardless, why lightning? What does it do that usb-c doesn't? In my understanding, nothing. If usb-c wasn't the future, wouldn't we have lighting ports on Macs?

Please be wrong.

It is way past time for Apple to dump the Lightning port. They should have went USB-C with the iPhone 7 when they dumping the headphone jack.

Apple, rip the Lighting port band-aid off. Go USB-C on all your devices.

And also add wireless Qi charging

1. OLED wasn't mature and Apple has to manufacture 50M+ of them. Not so easy.
2. Agreed, but no curve please.
3. Big batteries != Battery life
4. Fast charging would be nice. 12w chargers helps a bit.
5. Is nice, but causes more heat with the body being glass and the charge being wireless.

Looking at these points it's no wonder the Note 7 exploded.

Not really - Seeing how all points are in the GalaxyS in almost 3 generations and they did not explode.

I agree. Personally I wouldn't mind either way, but when you realize how much Apple has expanded lighting in just the last 1-2 years, it wouldn't make any sense for them to switch.
An earlier post on a different MR thread [cannot recall the dude or dudette], explained cogently, that whereas USB relies on on-board intelligence for translating and transcoding, with a passive cable, Lightning off-loads the intelligence to the active cable. And MFI enforces compliance by sourcing the Apple-made silicon used in the cable.

If made an interesting claim. And explains (to me) why it would be difficult for Apple to just ditch Lightning from an engineering post of view, aside from other logistic consumer challenges.

Sure is and iOS is the key to a walled garden with almost zero customizability or power user options.

The Android experience is virtually identical to the Apple experience for anyone with basic technology expertise. Better or similar performance, same major app providers, same basic user interface operation, similar terminology ... the major differentiator is that iOS is being dumbed down to the point of idiocy.

Even though I use multiple Macs for workflow and have done for thirty years I would never buy an iPhone. Software is key, and unless you want to be locked in Android is the way to escape.
You have good points but what I was getting at was that apple is very good at combining the software and hardware together. It's safer and has an easier approach to communication as iMessage and FaceTime are all built in. General population are not power users and apple seems to be doing just fine with the dubbed down experience.

How about alternative-fact-charging?

Apple seems to be in a transitional phases with its connections. Will they ship a Lightning-to-USB-C cable with the new phones, so they're compatible with the new computers? Or will they still have the old USB cables, requiring a dongle to connect to their own machines? It's getting messy.
They should have shipped their USB-C to Lightning cable with all MacBooks that only have USB-C port.

Or make both USB-C
Shipping a USB-C to Lightning cable with all USB-C equipped MacBooks provides a solution for all pre-existing Lighting port devices for every buyer of a USB-C Mac. Shifting to USB-C on iPhones in September 2017 wouldn't help all the people that own anything from an iPhone 5 to 7 or an iPad 4 or later.

I trust Kuo more than anyone else but this makes me sad. We could have had a future where the only cable we need is USB-C. Instead, we will have 2 different cables. At least I hope that we will get a USB-C to Lightning so we can connect iPhones to MacBooks.

You're going to have multiple cables for the near future anyway.
Apple Pencil, AirPods charging case, Mouse, Keyboard.
And don't get me started on headphones. 2 adaptors in the box now?

So going USB-3 this year only makes that matter worse for Apple and us. (And yes, USB-3 is great.)
Having changed to Lightning only a few years back (and only yesterday, in the minds of 90% of the non-techie users), they have to proceed very carefully.

Yup and apple would get backlash like crazy. People went nuts when apple ditched the 30pin that was TEN years old.

Ok, the reason why people bitched, and this is just my opinion, was you could only buy, at the time, the $30 cable at the Apple store, second it was a proprietary cable, which I still disagree with.

If Apple moves to USB-C, then you can get those anywhere, not just the apple store. Now, to get a good quality one, it will still cost someone $30, we are not limited to where we buy them from. As for counterfeits, well, APPLE already deals with that, just go to Amazon.com and put in Lightning Cable, every single one of these cables are counterfeits and will maybe last you a week or two, if they even work out of the box. If you made it longer, then you go lucky.

What if Apl makes it proprietary USB-C? Like HP? Which I feel is very likely for 'performance reasons" I highly doubt Apl gives up the lucrative accessory business.

Huh? There were numerous 3rd party 30 pin connectors available.

If you are making ONE backup, then your data is not really backed up. It doesn't matter what method they use, as long as it's more than one method.
[doublepost=1488474420][/doublepost]

Apple planned the Lightning connector years in advance, and 2 years before USB-C existed.

Too bad Apple doesn't read these forums, there's some great advice from armchair engineers in here!

Hey! I'm not the one who said it took "courage" to remove the headphone jack. Apple said that!
