I never thought of it that way, probably because I don't see the target markets as overlapping too much. The way I see it, there are two groups of people in the market for a new iPhone:

1. Those who want the latest and greatest, whether it be because they are early adopters of tech or they like to show it off.

2. Those who have accepted the yearly iPhone upgrade process as the norm due to carrier instistence and have no reason not to upgrade.

I would say the former group is more likely to go for the iPhone X, and the latter group would get the iPhone 8/8+. Not to mention, there is a significant cost differential, whether it be materially significant or psychologically significant.

Good breakdown. I have the 6 and am ready for some of the new features :)
I'm going for the X because of the bigger screen in the smaller form factor. I don't think I'd like the Plus.

Years into the making, and Timmy still couldn't secure a successful launch. I wouldn't expect anything less from the guy who was brought in to Apple by SJ for his expertise in operations.

But when Cook was promoted Apple lost their COO genius since a CEO isn't directly involved in logistics. At least he shouldn't be if he's doing the job of a tech CEO. A company dependent upon innovation is in my view not best served by a CEO who's a logistics expert.

I'm not convinced the iPhone X will be such a huge success as previous phones. I mean, what does it offer over the 8? Face Recognition - that's about it. Is that worth another $300?

No, that's not about it. It also offers:

Augemented reality
A11 Bionic chip
Tru-Tone display
OLED/HDR display
Wireless charging
Glass backing
Portrait Mode lighting
Upgraded Camera with Dual OIS
Stainless steel
Better battery (Two hours added over iPhone 7)

What something is worth is only valued by what the consumer appreciates. So that's completely variable.

I'm so set on getting an iPhone X at launch that I actually practiced placing preorders this morning so that I could be really fast at it next month. Yeah, I'm a loser, but I'm a loser with a system and have never missed a preorder launch day window for the iPhone. The only thing I haven't figured out yet is white or black? I'm thinking white will have lower preorders, which could increase my odds, and it's kind of a unique look with the black front, white back, and chrome band which harkens back to the original iPhone. This is the first time that I could go either way, because honestly I prefer the black front and everything else is secondary.

Ha, I did the same thing this morning adding items to my "bag" and practicing:)

Pretty much this. Every year. It'll be a madhouse come preorder time and some people will get them and others will be annoyed. I'm wondering if I will break my perfect ordering streak with this one, really.

I always get mine on launch day, but this could indeed change.

I hope not, but it could.
Yea. People will get later dates but track the planes and get it Saturday or earlier than Apple says. As usual.

Could I please have advice from some early adoption experts?

What is the best way to score a new iPhone X: go to a brick and mortar Apple Store on the 3rd, or pre-order at 3am on the 27th? I'd like to have one before December.

Pre-order. The Apple.com website always reappears about 7-10 minutes after the 12:01a.m. time so best to use the Apple Store App on your phone. Also, have your carrier website open as well as ATT and the others are known to jump the gun a bit and start accepting orders around 11:50p.m. The past three times I ordered a new iPhone I ended up doing so via ATT as it opened sooner and was less congested. And finally, say a prayer:)

The thing is why announce iphone x if the stock isn't ready?
There were already plenty of rumors about it, and it makes sense to have one event for all 2017 iPhones, among other reasons (give developers a chance to optimize for it, not have to strip the info from iOS 11 GM builds)

Was it more like end of cycle ... that dragged on beyond belief.

Yeah... I feel like it was in late April/early May. My kids got me one for Mother's Day that year and I handed down my other iPhone 4 to someone... my husband? Yeah... he took it and gave middle son his 3GS.

October 27th is gonna be a massive ''slaughter'' for the tens of millions of people around the world trying to get that iPhone X in the same minute ;)

If you order 5 minutes after the pre order starts, you'll get a confirmation email some what later with your shipping times '' April 22th-29th 2018":oops:
Shipping times will just say “Better luck next year ”.

I really wish there was an iPhone X in Gold, so all the people who lose it for a new color could fight over them while I quietly buy a silver one.

:D
I think the silver one is going to be the most popular. Sooooo, I'm going to order the space gray. I like the silver a little better, but, I'm just going to slap a case on it, anyway.

Preorder, hands down.

You'll want the App Store app open on your iPhone, any iPads you have, etc.

Whichever pops up first as open for you (you'll need to refresh the app) is the one you jump on. This is the fastest method. Favorite the one you want. Go straight to it, order, hope you get launch day delivery.

Thanks! Sounds like I should use the carrier site on my phone and the Apple Store on my iPad.

Is anyone truly surprised? Years to prepare and a man who is supposedly a logistical genius and we get squat every time a new product comes out. I would rather they delay an announcement to build up stock than to do things this way. Under promise and over deliver. It’s retail 101.

I think I'll go with the black one even though the white looks better naked. With a slim black case, the look of the black one will be way more seamless than any case with the silver/white.

I thought of it. Really, I'll take whatever they have that'll ship to me the fastest.

I have a Jet Black 7 plus right now, and after years of white-face phones, I swore I'd never buy another silver, gold, rose gold, etc.

But, this phone has a black front, so who cares if it's silver or space gray? I mean, silver is my sentimental fave (looks more "classic Apple") but I will not be upset if I need to go with space gray. It'll still operate the same way.

eBay. I’ll have one on there for the extremely low price of $4999 :D
