I think the silver one is going to be the most popular. Sooooo, I'm going to order the space gray. I like the silver a little better, but, I'm just going to slap a case on it, anyway.

Silver will be my choice. Primarily because the space gray will likely show more scratches and the silver has a more unique look this year, almost like an off-white color. Looks unique to me.

When I picture Ming-Chi Kuo, I picture a guy who sits at home in shorts and a t-shirt with a computer and a phone collecting bits of information from various sources, adding some of his own thoughts, and then feeding it to all these Apple sites. Seems like a pretty easy job and he's probably making a really good living. Lucky bastard! ;)

I picture him with a really sweet beard and mustache combo.

eBay. I’ll have one on there for the extremely low price of $4999 :D

LOL!

I never thought of it that way, probably because I don't see the target markets as overlapping too much. The way I see it, there are two groups of people in the market for a new iPhone:

1. Those who want the latest and greatest, whether it be because they are early adopters of tech or they like to show it off.

2. Those who have accepted the yearly iPhone upgrade process as the norm due to carrier instistence and have no reason not to upgrade.

I would say the former group is more likely to go for the iPhone X, and the latter group would get the iPhone 8/8+. Not to mention, there is a significant cost differential, whether it be materially significant or psychologically significant.

Interesting idea. Apple will likely continue this new type of lineup for a while. The plus models doubled the annual release and now this triples it. Having a super premium flagship milks the top of the market with a two step tech upgrade and allows Apple to satisfy the masses with an ordinary one step. It also allows Apple to put limited supply, cutting edge tech out on the market. Will be interesting to discover the actual demand for the top end model though.

Apple products never used to be about specs. They used to care about user experience.

Hear, hear! I think the "notch" will be gone from next year's iPhone. Every 1st-gen release has its shortcomings, and a black protrusion into one side of an otherwise beautiful screen does not make for an ideal user experience, I don't think. Chris Pirillo and others who have lambasted Apple for making that design choice are correct, in my estimation.

The most ass-backwards response I've heard a tech pundit give regarding the notch is what Leander Kahney said in this week's CultCast: "You know the only thing I don't like is the 'notch'; but, I don't know, I think I can learn to love that." Are you serious?! Drinking the Kool-Aid much, Leander?

Granted, I'm not a tech pundit so I don't cover this stuff as part of my job; but as a regular consumer, I'm not dropping over $1,000 for a phone while simultaneously telling myself, "Oh, I don't like this, but I'm sure I'll learn to love it".

intentionally restrict supply > drive up demand > release more supply > sell more than would have otherwise

hmm... economics sometimes does make sense

There's one very frustrating component to the iPhone upgrade program I've realized and haven't seen anyone else comment on. I haven't updated in 2 years and since my phone is freshly paid off I technically have to reapply for a new loan with the program. This excludes me from the pre-approval option which happened for the 8 and going to happen for the X (to my knowledge it was only for IUP customers who are doing the 1 year upgrade). So this means for the X I have to reapply the minute they go on sale, slowing down my checkout process, despite being a IUP customer for 2 years. Does anyone know if it's fairly easy and instantaneous upon checkout for re-enrolling in the IUP considering the credit check? Thanks

Could I please have advice from some early adoption experts?

What is the best way to score a new iPhone X: go to a brick and mortar Apple Store on the 3rd, or pre-order at 3am on the 27th? I'd like to have one before December.

The last two times I upgraded,(6,7) I got up at 3am and placed a pre-order. Everyone claimed stock would be so scarce that that would be the only way to acquire one. This was especially the case for my matte black 7+256 last year, as numerous sources, including apple claimed there would not be ANY plus stock in store on launch day.

On both launches I ordered two phones(me and the wife) in the middle of the night. On both occasions, despite order times just minutes after 3am, shipping dates were two weeks or more(SIX last year) after launch day.

On both occasions, monitoring MacRumors and iStockNow, I was able to secure my phone by going setting an in-store reservation and getting the phones there, canceling the preorders. This became even more of a problem last year, as one of the pre-orders moved to "shipped", despite never leaving china for another few weeks, and you can't cancel once they go to "shipped" status.

So this year, I'm skipping that mess and will just monitor store stock and walk in when available. Your mileage may vary.

Yeah. There is no way that design would have got past Steve. NO WAY!!

Maybe this will blow all records and maybe it won't. Nevertheless, you can count on an analyst to try to gin up the markets.

Is anyone truly surprised? Years to prepare and a man who is supposedly a logistical genius and we get squat every time a new product comes out. I would rather they delay an announcement to build up stock than to do things this way. Under promise and over deliver. It’s retail 101.
The thing is Tim is no longer the COO and he is acting as CEO and it's Jeff Williams's problem to deal with supplies.

It's not necessarily a bad thing for patient people who want to save $. Chances are if you wait till summer 2018, there could be some solid deals because $999 is absurd for a phone. As long as the phone gets a balance at reasonable time so there could be deals to push the X. The X will be reasonably priced by this time next year.

I was a little bugged at Apple for the price too. BUT, it's not $300 more. It is the next step from the Plus sized phone. So, if you were getting a 5.5" phone, and you want the 5.8", it's actually $200 more. I still think Apple are greedy as hell, but for the device that you use more times per day than any other device in your entire world, $200 more isn't THAT bad. IMHO.

All that said, I have no motivation to depart from my 6SP.

This is exactly why, after getting over the initial sticker shock, I decided to go for the 256GB X. I use my phone more than my desktop, laptop and iPad and it's my primary communication device. I'll just hold on to it for a bit longer than usual.

Don't you want iphone "XL?"

No, I'll be getting the regular 5.8" model. Getting down to the nitty gritty, I actually think the 4.7" form factor is a tad bit too big. Screen size is fine, but if keeping the old bezels, my perfect device would be 4.3-4.5". With the new form factor I'd prefer 5.3-5.5".

Device is slightly too wide for one handed use; causes too much stretching of thumb. We'll see if the issue is resolved at all by having no bottom bezel, but I doubt it.

The SE refresh is actually probably going to be the perfect form factor for me (4.3" display I believe, in similar small form factor).

I have larger hands, but just prefer the smaller device for ease of use. Had a nexus 6p for a while, and I can handle the screen size, but it's just not my preference.

Preorder, hands down.

You'll want the App Store app open on your iPhone, any iPads you have, etc.

Whichever pops up first as open for you (you'll need to refresh the app) is the one you jump on. This is the fastest method. Favorite the one you want. Go straight to it, order, hope you get launch day delivery.

Uh oh, I found a fly in the ointment: I'll be out of the country in January so I need an unlocked phone instead of one attached to my Verizon account. Some googling indicates I can only buy one at a physical Apple Store?

Well at least I'll know on the 3rd if I'll have an X for my trip.

Edit: looks like I can actually buy a SIM-free iPhone through the online Apple Store. Just confirmed by trying with an iP8. Now whether I get one for my trip is in the hands of the FSM!

Years into the making, and Timmy still couldn't secure a successful launch. I wouldn't expect anything less from the guy who was brought in to Apple by SJ for his expertise in operations.
Ya. The 10th anniversary iPhone timeline snuck up on him.
Sure redesign. How much 30% ?

It doesn’t seem like the iPhone 8 stood a chance against the X. Most people rent/lease their phones under their carriers so the $1000 price point definitely won’t deter anyone from getting the better option.
Definitely won't deter anyone?

I talk to a lot of people who feel the way you do about small phones. IMO Apple should have S, M, and L phones. Since the small one is most likely to be used in rugged conditions it should be butt-proof so anyone can sit anywhere with it in a back pocket. Build it like a tank so hikers can fall on it, white water kayakers can submerge it, and building contractors can abuse it all day long.

Break out of the Smartphone market safe zones, Apple. Do something unexpected. Consumers may surprise you.

I think going from ~65% screen to body size ration to 83% is caring about user experience.
No, that's not about it. It also offers:

Augemented reality
A11 Bionic chip
Tru-Tone display

OLED/HDR display
Wireless charging
Glass backing

Portrait Mode lighting
Upgraded Camera with Dual OIS
Stainless steel
Better battery (Two hours added over iPhone 7)

What something is worth is only valued by what the consumer appreciates. So that's completely variable.

Corrected that list for you.. :)

Strike out Portrait Mode lighting and Better battery, and half of Upgraded camera for the X vs 8 Plus

Tired of this now ... FaceID looks flaky, I don't like that TouchID has gone completely, it's going to be a fist fight to get one, I still have to book a store appointment to get one (UK upgrade program) and last but not least the thing is £1000.

Just picked up a mint S8 for £495 and a 64Gb u3 SD card for £23 giving me the 128Gb config that I'd like for 1/2 the cost of the X. I've tried Android before and not liked it, but that was a long time ago and given the above it HAS to be worth a punt :)

It's up to you, for me personally after a horrible experience with iPhone 6 I promised myself never to be an early adopter anymore. The first batch seems to be the one with the most scratches and defects.

I don't know if iPhone X Will indeed be as constrain as people say it will be, but all I know is that especially with the new form factors (iPhone 4, 5, 6) Apple manufacturing partners seem to need some time to perfect the process . I would imagine with the X and it's new technology it's probably going to be even worse.

Let someone else go through those growing pains
