Major League Baseball is expected to announce Thursday that Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez has tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and will be suspended for 50 games, The Los Angeles Times is reporting.

Ramirez's suspension is expected to be announced Thursday, The Times said.

Triple-A outfielder Xavier Paul has been told by the Dodgers that he will be promoted later today, according to The Times.

so glad we got rid of that ****er

^My friend just sent me that. I told him I'm not really surprised and that the Dodgers are pretty much screwed without his bat.

So zioxide and foto, do you think he was on steroid back when he was with the Sox? I personally think he was (I'm dropping my bias btw).

Well that would explain his mood swings :p Given that he always used to have a perpetually torn oblique when he was here,I would lean toward to yes. Now the spotlight will switch to Ortiz...

^^^^ What a dumbass. How hard is it to get the banned-substances list and compare it to the stuff you're taking or are thinking about taking?

I just read about this on CNN.com. I haven't heard anything about it locally yet, but I'm guessing this will overtake the Santa Barbara fires as a news story over the next few days.

:p I think Ortiz has to have done something too. They were absolute monsters when they were hitting 3/4

They don't care, they just need their stuff to keep going.

It's so sad that this will be more important than the fires.

People sometimes forget that PED's aren't only taken for the sole purpose of getting bigger. They also help you recover quicker from an injury or give you the extra energy to avoid taking a day(s) off..
Ortiz will be under the microscope this year. Especially with his struggles at the plate and drop off in power. And I don't want to hear that he's not getting pitches since Manny left or he misses Manny. He's been getting plenty of pitches to hit. That Friday night game against the Yankees in Fenway,he was striking out on 88 mph pitches.

In an appearance at USC last month, Jose Canseco said Ramirez's name "is most likely, 90%" on a list of 104 players that failed a drug test in 2003. The players were promised anonymity for taking tests in 2003; Rodriguez is the only player that has been identified among that group.
Jeezz,Jose right again?

Manny's statement
Recently I saw a physician for a personal health issue. He gave me a medication, not a steroid, which he thought was OK to give me. Unfortunately, the medication was banned under our drug policy. Under the policy that mistake is now my responsibility. I have been advised not to say anything more for now. I do want to say one other thing; I've taken and passed about 15 drug tests over the past five seasons. I want to apologize to Mr. McCourt, Mrs. McCourt, Mr. Torre, my teammates, the Dodger organization, and to the Dodger fans. LA is a special place to me and I know everybody is disappointed. So am I. I'm sorry about this whole situation.
Do you buy it.

ESPN reports it was a women's fertility drug used after taking steroids. HCG used by dopers to stimulate testosterone production after taking steroids.

MLB has to have strong evidence to suspend him 50 games. If it was weak, the player's union would have a field day with the suspension.

I think he tested on the HGC, that drug is banned, that is what Manny was talking about. He didn't test for steroids.

Ramirez, the source said, acquired the substance through a prescription from a doctor in Miami for his medical condition. The source intimated that Ramirez might bring legal action against the physician.

HCG
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_chorionic_gonadotropin

"a drug commonly ued in dopers for people coming off of a cycle to stimulate your bodies own test production"

TJ Quinn on ESPN

More TJ Quinn:

He origianlly tested clean but MLB had reports he was taking HCG

"non analytical positive"

basbeall had documents he was taking HCG-enough to suspend him

Manny originally was going to appeal and then decided not to

He has to know what he is putting into his body and wether or not it is on the banned list.

It doesn't really matter what the substance was or whether a doctor prescribed it. He's responsible for whatever he puts in his body and he serves the suspension.

I'm not sure that the Dodgers' lineup is "screwed" without him, as someone posted earlier. But it is a blow. They have to hope their pitching doesn't get any thinner in the meantime.

It might hurt their momentum, Manny gives them a boost and will that young team rebound.

It's not enough

Until there's a zero-tolerance permaban+lose your contract $$, there's no reason to take this seriously. All this means is that he gets a 50-day vacation to think about the $16M he's still getting paid this season.

Think about it. Pete Rose gets banned for betting on games, but this joker only gets 50 days for proactively cheating?

There's a whole era of players with a black cloud over their heads. Sad as it is, the commisioner and owners sat by and did nothing as this all went on. Take a look at how much revenues for MLB increased from 98 on..
