Huh, so it seems like all battery cases add about 65-75% charge out of the box. I have a Mili Power Spring myself; was hoping to hear different news about the Morphie.

How do you like the Mili? I am liking mine so far but this Mophie is looking pretty good.

They probably saw a few people use the Promo1 code and disabled it....

When I abandoned the cart, I had entered everything up to the credit card info and then accidentally closed the browser tab. Didn't think much of it....was going to go hunt to see if I could find a valid code. Not 15 minutes later I got a 'we noticed you abandoned a shopping cart session on our website, if you return we'll give you 15% off' email. And that was the code they gave me.

I've seen the some sites use the shopping cart technology to do this....most of the time it's very annoying, but sometimes I guess it's not a big deal.

Really looking forward to see how it works out. Yet another heavy phone call log today...and my iP4 battery is already at ~30% at 3:30pm (starting off fully charged at 7:00am).

And, there are a few youtube videos. Make sure you are looking for the iP4 specific ones...
 
And....just got the email that mine has shipped UPS today (same day I ordered).

In order to charge your iPhone with the Juice Pack and get the most "juice" please follow the below guidelines.


When charging your juice pack, make sure you allow the pack to fully charge. You'll know it's fully charged when all 4 LED lights on the back will be solid. On average it takes 3-4 hours to completely charge the juice pack.
When the juice pack is on your iPhone and your phone is charged, make sure the juice pack is in the off (red) position. Once your iPhone battery gets low, to about 10-20%, flip the switch on the bottom of the pack to on (green). To get the best charge, try to not use your iPhone and leave it in standby mode (see below) while the juice pack is on and charging. This is not necessary however doing this will produce the best results.
After about 1-2 hours from turning the juice pack on, check your iPhone battery. At this point your battery should be about 80% full. At this point, shut off the Air. (The lithium-ion polymer batteries use a fast charge to charge your device to 80% battery capacity, then switch to trickle charging. That’s about two hours of charge time to power an iPhone to 80% capacity, then another two hours to fully charge it.) You can then switch your juice pack to the off position to preserve any "juice" you may need for later.
 
I let my phone drop down to 10%. I fully charged the jpa until all four lights were solid. dropped the phone into the case with zero usage and just let the air charge my phone. it fully charged my phone from 10 to 83% before the air died, so in essence it would add about 73 to 75% to a dead iphone. i don't think there is a battery case out there that will charge your phone from 0 to 100%, at least none that I have seen. This was similar when I had the mili. I'm ok with 75% charge but how can a 1500mah battery only charge the phone to 75% when the phone's battery is about 1400mah?

Is this like wireless router companies claim you can reach up to 10X the speed of what you typically reach?

I'll try....(both of these examples assuming the JPA is 'ON').

The JPA has two charging modes (assume iPhone in complete standby mode). One when the iPhone battery is less than 80% capacity (fast charge - meaning it's using lots of current from the JPA), and one when the iPhone battery is over 80% capacity (trickle charge - not much current from the JPA....there are more details here to consider.....but I'll leave it simple).

The JPA also has the circuitry to act 'in place of' the iPhone's primary battery (iPhone now being used for whatever app), just as when it's connected to the iPhone's included USB cable and wall charger and you use the iPhone. The iPhone will use the JPA first to power the iPhone, and if any is left over it will trickle some of that over to charging the internal iPhone battery.

Remember that all iPhones/iPods/all Macs have a charging circuit inside them. This circuitry also talks with the charger (or JPA) to optimize everything between charging and use (part of the license for the 'Made for iPod' deal).

All that being said....I don't expect a 1:1 ratio of the Mophie JPA to be able to completely replenish an iPhone battery from 10-20% (when the warnings hit) back to 100%. If the JPA could, it would most certainly need to be bigger. The 'virtually double' claim is just marketing speak for them to make the JPA sound better on extending the iPhone battery life....

My guess is that your 65% number is because of a combination of things. The JPA might not have been at 100% when it started charging your iPhone, but also some of the 'juice' (I hate that term...) was used up while you did things on your iPhone while the JPA was turned on.

It's referred to as 'parasitic loss'. The circuitry to make all this happen uses some of that power, it can't all be transferred.

And....yes. Very similar to those claims....everyone's results are going to be different based on use.

I have a friend who works in the lithium-ion battery business (specifically, designing battery systems for powering high output military grade flashlights, weapons lights, etc), and I asked him about this. He said that transfer from battery to battery (in this case, from the Juice Pak's battery to the iPhone's battery) is a very inefficient process, so don't expect anything close to one to one transfer (a 1400-1500mAh battery fully charging a depleted 1400mAh battery to 100%). A good bit of the energy will be lost as heat (which explains why the iPhone gets warm when charging), and he said to expect AT BEST 75% conversion, maybe more like 60-70%. This would actually fall in line with what has been reported so far here. His off the top of his head reply said that you'd probably be looking for a 1800-2100mAh lithium ion battery to be able to recharge the iPhone's battery to full from almost depleted, depending on how efficient the circuitry was for the system.

I clearly remember my juice air for the 3G was able to charge my phone fully 1 time plus last a bit longer too. And I always turn it on when the 20% left warning comes on

I could never get a full charge for my 3GS out of my Juice Air for it. One other thing my friend Dave (the battery systems guy I mentioned above) said was that typically batteries are "binned" (sorted) by their lowest consistent capacity. So you could have a "1400mAh" battery that may actually have a 1500-1600mAh (or more) capacity, while others are right at the 1400mAh limit. He even stated that he's seen batches of batteries come in that were ordered and supposedly specced at at certain mAh rating (say 2000mAh), and several in that batch test out way lower than that when he/they actually check them. So there could be a lot of variation in runtimes with the battery packs in these cases, especially if they are ordered at the lowest possible price. He said that his company will often have to pay extra to have all batteries in an order tested individually to make sure they all meet the desired mAh rating.

The 3G and 3Gs has a smaller battery (1150 mAh) than the iPhone 4 (1400 mAh), so this makes perfect sense IF the juice air you had used a 1500mAh battery in it.

Was just about to post this. The 3G had a lower capacity battery (1150mAh), like you said. It was even slightly less than the 3GS battery (I think the 3GS was rated at 1200-1250mAh).

So i let it go from 20 to 80 then let it go down again to 60 and it charged it back to 80. So it makes sense. So at 80 you turn the mophie off and you have anothere boost if needed.

But remember the air for the 3GS only has a 1250 or so capacity.

Yes.....but I'm going to make it just a bit more confusing.

I may get shot down in flames for this....

This is also the way to fastest reach the 500 charge/recharge cycles on the JPA, which is where they claim the overall capacity is ~75% of new. Not many will reach this number before upgrading iPhones....but the possibility exists for heavy users.

How many charge cycles do you get in the juice pack air for iPhone 4?

The juice pack is rechargeable for over 500 cycles. (Full cycles, partial cycles don’t count as full. So, you can charge your juice pack 10% of the way 10 times before it counts as a complete cycle.) Don’t be afraid to top it off! After 500 cycles, its fully charged capacity will be less than 75% of the the capacity when it’s new.

So...I'm thinking for longest battery life expectancy (not charge capacity used daily), is to top off both the iP4 and the Mophie JPA often.
