Hmm. Since the pictured book title is "Cryptonomicon", maybe the new macbook will include a security feature that "bricks" it if stolen. Not huge, but neither was the iPod "Lets Rock" event.

But maybe in addition to bricking itself, the MB in distress will shoot a green laser into the sky to cast a giant :apple: on the clouds. And we'll meet AppleMan™. Defender of Data. Protector of Portables. Who will lay down his foes like bricks, break some windows, play a tune, and fly off again, shouting from the heavens:

"One more thing..."

It's pretty clear to me :).

If I recall correct, blue-ray uses a green/blue ray to burn the data to the disc. So, it will be blue-ray support on the new Macbook Pro and maybey the macbook too ! :D

And maybey the 10.6 update is released that day too :).

Yeah. I think it may be an External Video Card.

Their will be 1 line of MacBooks, Combining the MacBook and MBP into 1 line, all aluminum. 3 Sizes, 13, 15, and 17....

All will come with a Integrated Intel GMA x4500HD, AND an External Good Video Card in "The Brick" which will connect via some Proprietary connector/Cable. This way, Laptops can be thinner, cooler, more battery when on the go and whatever.... and when you want to play games, you plug in "The Brick" and instantly have like a Desktop class videocard (At least High End Mobile Video Card, with lots of memory)

I think this makes sense.. and is purely a guess... but something I would totally enjoy.

Now this makes total sense.

LOL:p

And most users who aren't that fussed have to pay for 2 video cards, and always have the brick plugged in when they want full graphics portably? Not convinced I'm afraid. I don't see apple making people pay extra for a functionality that 85% of people don't want/need.

Yep, I'll buy one if the top price point is still $1999 :p

Well, if the "Brick" rumors come from the same source as the "Rainbow iPods" did... (eventually, rainbow ipods referred to the promo images)
... then the "brick" has nothing to do with the structure of the thing!

It could possibly give a hint about the promotional images but nothing about the actual product.

Sure, they talk about product transitional phases, that 10.5 is "a good basis for the coming future OSs" and products in general i would say..

To me, all this means is "update the hardware with the newest mainstream technology so we don't have to think about it for quite some time"
That is new cases, introduction of new ports (FW800 & 1600, USB3), fiber channels would be awesome(though still expensive), screens, keybords etc..

A complete overhaul in intel tech(nehalem) is ~2 product cycles away and hopefully snow leopard will be already out at that time. Then, add Apple custom designed chipsets (realistic enough- independent to intel product cycles and death of hackintosh and death of the macbook's achilles heel)

Therefore, "the brick" is probably irrelevant to what the actual product brings. More important things coming than "a brick"

The brick is only about marketing the thing...

To all those who think that 9to5 is pulling a publicity stunt...

They have no reason to do this. Know why?

1. They've established themselves as GOOD. How good? They've gotten REAL pictures before release. They've had stuff that Apple Legal made them take down.
2. The general consensus, therefore, is that they have a guy inside Apple itself who is leaking this info. Unless he is being directly misinformed by Apple, and provided he IS in there, he's going to know what they're doing.
3. Provided they do have a guy inside Apple, what would be the point of making things up? If you already have insider access to new products, why would you waste time with the misinforming business when the truth generates far more "hits"?

9to5mac is the go to place for Mac rumours. Whilst its not straight from Seth, he wouldn't let an article basically saying "this is huge" without knowing it was legit. 9to5mac wants to do this rumour by Monday. Tuesday is a week away from the proposed Mac laptop refresh event. 9to5mac doesn't need to hoare themselves.

Ideas:
Communication - Laser/IR/other wavelength for communication. Speakers, Screens etc.
Wireless USB is pretty much wrapped up, as is USB 3, and also Firewire update - Will Apple bring these in to the laptops?

Displays:
Apple Cinema Displays with added bonuses?
Laser screens?
(Depth perception from iSight (I know it's a few years away really :/ )

Media Station
Drobo from Apple with mini thrown in - Swap and change HD. Replaces mini
(ZFS next year remember, so this might come after ZFS is added to OS X)

Power:
Wireless transmission (induction, or even the at a distance technology (though you think you would have heard if Apple had bought those IP rights))

'Brick' sounds like a reference to the form factor (unless it's something to do with the power supply, which I doubt). Perhaps the Apple TV mark II is going to be some kind of gaming platform?

Possible - Is 9to5mac hinting at formfactor?

Yeah. I think it may be an External Video Card.

Kind of like a Performance booster: For a desktop, laptop, whatever - like the graphics cards in a box for laptops, this baby plugs into your Mac, and provides GPU, possibly memory, Hard drives etc. This could then be used as a power house add on, if hooked up to a Snow Leopard OS.

dambro1978's take could be true - a connection hub brick - for ports, inbuilt graphics card etc.

So clue 2 is a green what looks to be a laser, on top of a book, looking like it's hitting an Apple symbol, that may or may not be on something.

They mus have got info fairly recently:
Wed, 10th September 2008 - 11:10 — Cleve Nettles:

What is 'The Brick?'
There is nothing I love more than Apple rumors. So, in that respect, I have some great news for everyone. One of our tipsters has a bit of a riddle for us.
S/he says that the MacBook update event in a few weeks (you know the one with the glass trackpads) is 'all about the Brick'. What does "The Brick" mean? Can anyone out there help us out? This is one of those tipsters that has a solid track record so we want to go along for the ride.

Maybe we can figure out this riddle together?
Update: John Gruber from Daring Fireball says the announcement will occur October 14th

..those of you holding out for a new lineup of MacBooks will have to wait until October 14, according to sources who, as they say, are familiar with Apple’s hardware plans.

Update: The two best guesses so far (links to Wireless USB hub Seth article
and Macstein's article saying the Brick "is Apple’s code word for its “Windows-killer”"

26th September Andy Space asked:
Fri, 09/26/2008 - 03:31 — Andy Space
"Well, we should know soon enough, come October, - and we're curious about the 'brick'..."

27th September, Andy Space is asking if the Brick is about ATV:
Apple TV replacement looms?
Is this related to the brick?"
(Updated it later)

The second 'Brick' clue
We have received more information. This will be huge.
Laser%20Green.png

We'll have more for you this weekend....

(What's the actual laser, what's it hitting - if it wawss strong enough, wouldn't that be burning that Apple thing's logo?)
(sorry guys, this isn't about the book...just came with the other stuff)
What does Clive mean when he says about it not being about the book: "just came with the other stuff"?

As for Cleve - is it his/her source? (It's strange, why wasn't it Andy Space who does a lot for the 9to5 articles, or Seth himself?)

Liking
OMG you guys... SuperDrive on entry-level MacBooks! This is going to be HUGE! :p

Edit: What was the tech coming to laptops that could allow you to whilst using your laptop, swap from a simple graphics, to a decent graphics card depending on it being hooked up to power/having a graphics card box add on?

Xkcd: Unrelated, but heck. "Although ... who else can't wait for them to incorporate that Wiimote head-tracking stuff into games? Man, the future's gonna be *awesome*"

turn the lights on

The image shows the apple being lit up in the dark. Think night vision goggles.

The whole macbook will light up in green when the lights go down. Like the backlit keyboard but only this time the whole machine. Makes it a lot easier to operate at night.

I don't get this one at all.

Usually when I see one of these vague teasers, I have an idea what it will be. This time I'm not seeing anything. I feel like Homer Simpson with an empty text balloon above his head.

I guess I'll... wait and see. Apple has to introduce something soon. Their laptops, great as they are, are getting kinda stale. Not that they're falling behind in performance or features, but they just haven't changed much in a long time.

You're all so far off the mark. Apple plan to use their brand awareness, retail locations and crack legal team to enter the illegal drug market.

Anyone think that the "Brick" might be Apples compeditor to the PlayStation and the X-Box?

Clearly this image looks lige some game, and I did see others post about the posibility of a Apple game-consol.

Never really put much thought into it, and I really hope that the 14th is all about the MBP since I'm in that market atm... but what do you think?

i bet it's an ecstacy tablet the size of a brick, and they're going to have lazers and trance music to celebrate
qdance.jpg

actually, on 2nd thoughts. i'm probaby wrong.

My own speculations.

First post here @ MacRumors.

I am actually excited with this "Brick" rumors.

My predictions/speculations:

1. Remember the Q3 Conference Call? "Product transition"? Maybe some rumors (sorry for the no "U") might be true: the product transition might mean the transition from Intel chips (not the CPU) to NVDIA chips. Hey, wait: what the heck is the color of NVIDIA? Right. Green.

2. Even though 9to5 said that the book has nothing to do with it, I guess it "secretly" has a meaning. I agree with other forumers' statements that the name "brick" might suggest its form factor.

3. Speaking of form factor, "brick" might show a pocket-sized MacBook (add the book underneath a laser) that might show a beautiful, aluminum brick.

4. I guess the MacBook touch/next-gen Newton is not yet ready for primetime. It might coincide with 10.6 or a Mac OS update after 10.6.

5. Apple TV update might just hit it. DVR might get that noise, plus the gaming device.

6. To make things a bit shorter, a wireless USB hub might get it.

7. If the Mac tablet comes, the killer-app will be the eBook reader, considering (again) the book under the laser.

8. The green laser might slight represent the Blu-Ray field, but I guess Apple will not yet nail it.

9. Finally, they will launch a fourth branch of Apple. Currently, there are three main products of Apple: Mac, iPod+iTunes, and iPhone. There is something that might be added, so it will be: Mac, iPod+iTunes, iPhone, and "a missing link for the brick".

Anyway, it's just my speculations. If I nail it, I got my 2 cents.

:apple:

Wireless dock

I think it's more useful but a little duller than everyone suggests.

After Airdisk, and time capsule, I think Apple is ready to put all the ports on a laptop on a wireless dock - or BRICK if you will - connected via wireless USB. This allows everything, including the larger hard-drive, peripherals, networking, external displays EVERYTHING to be off-board. The device could be shared between multiple machines - either MacBooks, or tablets, or iPhones or Apple TVs or anything else Apple thinks up.

It's a wireless home hub - a cloud for the home. With green lazer beams in it. Y'know, to make it cool. Ok - didn't really get the lazer reference.

Still be something I'd buy in a heartbeat - and Apple are already halfway there with the Time Capsule and Airdisk.
