Maybe this shot isn't from china at all - just because that's where the leak's originating publicly, that doesn't mean that's the origin of the photo. I imagine that the Cupertino campus knows some people in China... these case 'leaks' could be coming from inside, just as easily as not.

If I were Apple, I'd be laughing my ass off all the way to the bank after reading these forums and looking at every frantic post on here as another fat cheque that I'd be cashing whenever I felt like it ;)

To the contrary, meaning that as it becomes thinner and thinner there is less space available for efficient cooling, less space for a capable battery, less space to put the interfaces...

Maybe the 'brick' is a new cooling system? The thing uses disposable heat-sinks that it ejects like bullet casings as it overheats them :)

Or maybe it's managed to harness the brick-like obelisk from 2001 and shunt the insane internal temperatures out through a rift in the space-time continuum.

Or maybe they just give you a big aluminum brick to keep in the freezer, that you can take out an slide under the macbook pro when you start to smell burning silicone.

or maybe they've already said what it is?

I'm afraid this will be another boring update with no innovation. Still the same old 10 years old design. Maybe time to buy a new brand.

Maybe you should. i use windows vista ultimate and i have no complaints. Yer and apple dont even have a touchscreen yet and look at the awesome HP touchsmart!

what are the chances that USB 3.0 would come out along with the new macbook release?? it would be pretty dumb to get a macbook now isn't it, since there is a shift of usb 2.0 to 3.0.. what do you think???

Really, really, really not going to happen, considering how long it took Apple to move to USB 2.0 from 1.1 (although they were trying to promote FireWire at the time).

jx

my point was actually how is "smuggling" a casing out going to be easier than taking a quick photo? It's not , in no way, shape or form easier. Period.

Maybe.... it's a new Stealth Aluminum, with the extra Unique Selling Point "No more worries about U.S. Feds and Customs scanning your laptop at airport check-in"....

Well, if you look at the photo from this morning, you may notice there's a mystery port that isn't in tonight's photo, in between the USB and the cut-off port. The cut-off one is the wrong shape for MagSafe, and it spans the whole width of the shell, so I'm guessing that is ethernet. The mystery one from this morning is about the right size and shape for a 9-pin Firewire port.

So here's my theory: This is the MacBook, what we saw this morning was the MBP. The MB will not have firewire (many consumer devices don't use it, or at least don't need it), but the MBP will use a single 9-pin port to support FW400 and FW800, as it's still important for video and audio people.

You're right on. 16" MBP smaller Macbook tonight.

I hope we can see these or whatever Apple is preparing for us,in less than a month,or even by the end of November, who knows..I don't recall Apple updating any product in Nov/Dec,so by the end of Oct would be better..
These last two sets of pics,of both MB and MBP,actually confirm not only a more solid looking laptop(s),but what makes me think about bricks is the kind of design they have, the fact that what looks like one single piece of aluminum ends just about a cm to the inside from the ports and cd drive, suggesting a lego like sliding in of the rest of the laptop, the whole inside, probably eliminating some more screws,I hope it's all made better than iPhones,my 3Gs built quality has sucked big time

Brick ?

Doesn't look like a revolutionary super-strong brick of aluminium, carved with lasers and waterjets, a one-piece case, without screws etc, as predicted earlier...

Actually the Macbook has been updated in Nov for the last two years...

hey, you're right,I must have thought about MBPs, I guess, but still, first week of Nov at the latest,if not, then I guess Apple's not ready or they keep selling lots of the current notebooks and we'll see an update in Jan or even in Spring, I mean, look at the Mini..
It all comes down to the basis of the first person talking about the 14th
oops2, what were your expecting? A lot of people claim MBAir is one of the best built laptops ever, and still,it has a lot of screws, and it looks like it's been somehow carved out of one solid piece, were you expecting the whole structure to be poured on top of the screen and logic board?if the whole thing is made out of 4 pieces only,2 on top and 2 on bottom,we've seen one only, plus battery of course,I'd find it revolutionary

That, there, my friends, looks like a 12" MacBook case if you ask me.

Absolutely fantastic!

Finally, a REAL UFO! ;)

** I take it back - the clearance on the side looks more like it's probably a 13.3" after looking at the air **

Nope. Look at the width of the keboard and the width of the persons hand in relation to the case. That's at least a 13.3.

No need for Firewire? May I get an explanation as to WHY? Not like anything new is coming out soon to justify the "anymore" statement. (USB 3.0 is probably the soonest advancement that could justify axing FW, but that isn't until 2009 at the earliest)

I made that statement based on an article that I read regarding apples future product configuration from one of the tech magazines in which they stated most likely apple will be dropping the firewire support all together after firewire-800.

I don't see any firewire support on AIR. I guess they didn't need it :D

Cool. More leaks (or false positives). Either way, it makes me feel slightly better for waiting! I just sold my Macbook, and am holding my savings, and cash from that sale until next week. If it doesn't pan out, I will still be totally fine with a refurb current gen Macbook Pro.

You forgot power... That first one on the left is magsafe. Then ethernet, 2usb, then the unknown square.. probably some small form DVI.

It would be idiotic to have a display port in front of the USB ports. It would make inserting and removing the USB devices a pain since the DVI cable would always be in the way. If you look at the current designs, the video port is always closer to the back than the usb/firewire ports.

No you are not.

I don't know where this obsession with 'thinness' comes from. After a certain point it has no functional value - to the contrary...

For all these who wants very thin, but very powerfull laptops, the time is not right.

The tehnology must change, eg. classic mechanic HDDs must be forgotten, flash-drive all the way, also, the CPUs must work without ventilators (ok, a heatsink can stay), many chips on the motherborads must bi shrinked.

Maybe in 5 years you can buy for about 500 $ an latpop with 8-core CPU, that has already integrated an powerfull GPU, with a 2-4 TB flashdisk. Maybe thats just Sci-Fi.

Alot of talk about people wanting black aluminum models..

Remember, IF they went with black, it would only be available on the highest model. Black MBP @$3100 :apple:

Also, that would be the only difference between the high-end MBP and the $3100 model. Just the black color..
Hey, they've done it before.

I hope this is the Pro version - no more wasted space around the keyboard. The current 15" is a great system, but what a waste of space - they could have easily fit a numeric keypad in all that wasted space around the keyboard - slim it down and tighten it up - a 14" 16:9 screen would easily fit if you don't insist on such large bezels. Add to this the battery design of the earlier pictures (so memory and HD can be upgraded like the current MacBook) and you'll have a top notch system. So long as the processors aren't throttled, this would future proof the system for many users. They'll more than make up the loss of "upgraders" witht eh number of "switchers." Now, if they'd just buy out VMWare for OS X and integrate it into the OS, that would be the final nail in the MS coffin...
