Well with the iPad you get two models (on top of three "submodels" ie; storage) wifi and wifi+3G. I could see them doing the same with the iPod Touch.

yeah, but that's not what I'm saying with the post if you actually read it slowly... If you buy an iPad right now and want to run it on T-mobile after cutting up the sim and doing all the extra work you would only get EDGE, the 3G freq. from T-mobile are different than the rest of the world, the chip on the iPad and any other device w/ 3G will need to be as universal as possible worldwide so T-mobile 3G frequencies would need a dif. chip than all the rest of the world and that's simply not cost-productive. who wants to pay for 3G access and only run slow EDGE, nobody!

No they don´t.. Often it´s just an update of the current version to make it compatible with new devices or functions. A major overhaul is long overdue.

Technically, while Apple hasn't fully overhauled the look/feel of iTunes in each new version, the numbering indicates that they intend for it to be a 'major' update (in other words, it's not only updated to support new devices, but major features are generally added too).

iTunes 7, 8 and 9 (possibly even earlier versions too) have all been unveiled and released at Apple's annual September event in consecutive years - the only exception being iTunes 7 being released in 2006 and iTunes 8 not being released until two years later, in September 2008. It's kind of become tradition for an upgraded iTunes with additional features to be released alongside the new iPods (for example, only a couple years ago Genius, Genius Mixes, Grid View, Home Sharing and iTunes DJ didn't exist - they've all been introduced and subsequently worked upon at the annual September event).

One can only hope that carriers be relegated to nothing but dumb pipes in the future, the same way landline internet providers are. Everyone I meet is using less minutes/SMS/MMS, and more and more data. Texts are sent with Google Talk, pictures are emailed, and a good number of calls are done with VoIP.
let's cross our fingers that this is the true result of an end to the AT&T exclusivity contract. People love the iPod touch, I know many people with an android phone and an iPod touch, dumb phone + iPod touch. I for one am tired of the smartphone war. We took two steps back when smartphone data plans became part of the monthly budget, when we're already paying for Internet at home. If the iPod touch gets 3G and GPS - it's time to drop the smartphone and go back to the dumbphone.

So if the new touch has 3G, 5mp camera, video, and GPS i'll be selling my iphone 4, obviously it won't though.

That is why the iPod Touch will not have 3g. The iPod touch has a different purpose. My comment should be a featured comment so everyone can see and realize it's not happening. I certainly don't want 3g, as you pay monthly and I already have other things to pay monthly for.

It's not all about you.

The colossal feature I envision is prepping the software for streaming. I personally would love to see Apple work on the iTunes Store, especially the App Store.

Needs. Better. Searching.

The Italian ADR Studio who designed the iWatch wrote: "Say goodbye to the iWatch" after getting 13 visits from Cupertino, but I don't think so. I mean if Apple won't release it, I will. I'm positive that there are people who want one. Even if its not Apple branded. Have a look for your self:

Note: Yes, that's flash ladies and gents :D

Go back to playing Halo...

Kidding :D

so as long as the price difference is small, it doesn't matter? So it would be fine for there to be 3g iTouch and iPhone if it were to just have $100 of a difference?

Sorry dude, I totally disagree with you. There will always be a market for people that want an iTouch with data, but don't want an iPhone. They will never buy an iPhone due to contract/unlocked prices.

It's a viable option if you can afford it. Not everyone can.

Do you really expect an iPod touch with 3G/GPS along with a decent amount of storage, two cameras, and a retina display to be significantly cheaper than an unlocked iPhone 4?

I do think that there is a market for such a device, particularly in countries where there are no factory unlocked iPhones. It's also not going to be significantly cheaper than an iPhone.

This bickering is pointless. Lord Vader will provide us with the location of the Rebel fortress by the time this station is operational. We will then crush the Rebellion with one swift stroke.

Yes, how well would for example a $400 3G surcharge for the iPad 3G fly?
People seem to forget that the iPhone is a 70% profit margin product, Selling two almost identical products, one with a 70% and with a 30% profit margin side by side is not going to be easy.

Yes, there will always be an additional Market if you start selling an existing product at half its price.

In any country where there is no factory-unlocked iPhone available, there is a market for a factory-unlocked iPhone.

I do think there will eventually be a 3G iPod but not next week...I mean I at least think apple would allow verizon to introduce it's iPhone first before making another device that can make calls unless verizon will provide the 3G service for this iPod.

Something tells me Apple's contract with AT&T might prevent the existance of a 3G Touch.

While Apple may not care, AT&T would certainly care about people becoming no n-contract customers and on/off monthly payers instead.

I assume their contract doesn't allow Apple to release such a device without their approval/involvement.

Well, of course there is always a market for an unlocked iPhone. I was merely saying that where there lack unlocked iPhones there would of course be a greater market for a 3G enabled iPod.

Even if Apple wanted to sell a slightly cheaper ($100ish less) device that lacked the phone/messaging apps, had a lower quality camera and general build, I think this is entirely a moot discussion. I simply find it hard to believe that telecoms like AT&T would be a willing participant in turning their networks into a dumb pipe. It's one thing for them to offer generous data plans on a 10" tablet. It's something entirely different to put cheap prepaid data on a pocketable device that can make VOIP calls.

Because most people won't do that. You need to remember that the majority of people who use these devices aren't nerds.

But how long does it take for people to catch on. It may not hurt apple initially, but eventually right? I mean...once my mom sees me doing it, trust me, she will catch on quick.

There would be no difference between an iPad and an iPod Touch 3G. Both are/ would be no contract.

Sure... I suppose.

I say why care? Some people desire 3G; let them have it.

I currently have three iPhones activated. One I use for calls, the other two are activated just for the data plans. I would have gladly purchased two 3G iPod Touches instead of the iPhones if they existed a few months ago when I activated the phones.

Would you be willing to deactivate the two iPhones that are being used just for the data plan at this very moment with assurance that a 3G iPod touch would never happen?

Why would I deactivate them if I was assured that an iPod Touch 3G would never happen? I have them activated now because there is no 3G iPod Touch and an iPad is too big.

Hopefully these 3 iPhones aren't specifically for your use, because if so, I'd be left utterly confused as to why you're spending an outrageous amount for Data accessible on one phone.

I think that AT&T would actually appreciate having an increased number of customers with data plans overall. Sure they may lose some people with iPhones, but it'll probably be more than balanced out by new uptake of iPod touch 3g owners.

They are all just for my use. I used 12GB of data on one and 7GB of data on another last month alone.

Can I ask how you possibly even consume 19gb of data ON A PHONE?!!! Its kind of impressive in a way. Has AT&T sent you any warnings?

I guess everyone here seems to forget that the iPhone is in fact a phone. What are you gonna do, use Skype as a replacement? Sure...

Yes. Why not? I only need a cell phone for occasional use. I don't use one for my work.

$100/month is outrageous. Skype and Wifi are out there, and if Apple doesn't want to make it available for a lower price, someone else will.
