yes but if you use skype do you get a real phone number or can you only talk to other people with skpe?

I have the same question. If there existed a 3G iPT, and you used skype, you could call other skype users, or real phone numbers (for a fee), but as far as I know nobody would be able to call you? Only other skype users. I think if you pay you can tie your skype account to a phone number to receive incoming calls, but that would require you to have a phone number in the first place (i.e., cell phone plan- thus negating the need to use 3G iPT as a phone).

That said I still don't think they would make a 3G iPT. Oh and if they did, expect to pay an extra $100-150 for the feature, making the price difference between it and the iPhone to be not as large as you may think.

dude I pay a lot of monthly bills and I still like the idea of buying gadgets w/out extra monthly bills for their complete use... why pay extra for something I don't want on it! (model it's a tier hardware structure for apple)

What do we know of Chris: Born 1990 (MR), he has ipod touch 2g & Ipad, WANTS iphone 4, had an ipod touch 1g (GDGT), has no job (twit 23hrs ago)... I feel you times are tough, but chill a bit :)

I don't use those sites. Nice try though.

Who would pay $300 more just so they could get the phone part?

The way I see it, at least in America, the people who are paying $300 more for the phone part have the disposable income to do so and will pay the 300 no matter the price, just to have the phone. The rest of us will pay $199 when our contracts allow us to upgrade (which happens to be the same price as the itouch). So in essence, the argument between the iphone and itouch boils down to do you want a contract or not, which seems to be a legitimate difference to me. People are not paying $300 more for the phone part, because the phone part is the same price.

At least here, the sound quality using Skype is not nearly as good as the regular phone quality. I remember the US phone quality to be pretty poor so maybe the difference isn´t that big over there.

It's funny tho, I rather people Skype me than call me on my cell if i'm home. It gives me the ability to be totally hands free with video (if enabled). Now I have a MBP and found that people I talk to can hear me well if I leave the room.

My feeling is that Skype calls are quality for home set-ups.

I don't think a lot of people have enough money to justify that, America's economy is still in poor shape.

Touche..

Agree to disagree then?

I'm thinking the "new" app may not be an app at all, but rather iLife of iOS devices. It will work one and one with the mac iLife and even mobile Me.

this may not ever happen, but I do wonder if Apple will ever create a competitor to Windows Live and offer iLife on Windows?

Then theres always what I said and iLife be digital only. $29 (like Snow Leopard) and you have an option to upgrade to the "pro" verisons of iLife for an additional $20. Pro editions could have more advanced features.

Now that would be cool. Especially on the iPad! The possibilities are endless right now. We're not too far away, this keynote should be good.

Some of you people are assuming there will be only opne model for the touch and it has 3G. chances are there will be two, like the ipad.

IF the iPod touch gets 3g there will be 3g+wifi and wifi-only models, I'm pretty sure about that.

sure.. there are so many ChrisGonzalez90 that are from Hillsbury, OR on all 3 sites ;) I'm not gonna post the specific sites addresses because I really don't care, I'm just saying chill... also, anyone here can google it and see for themselves that all of them have the same address  you really should secure more your info. disclosure on the web ;)

I'm not sure you understood what I'm saying. If the itouch came out with 3g, people will still buy the iphone because the two are essentially the same price: $199 (not the $300+). People who do not want contracts, or are already in the middle of a contract, or just want a device that does data will still buy the itouch.

Yeah thats what I said. i should have said that before. My apologies.

bingo

I agree and I have two mortgages to pay for in addition to utilities. I am sick of all the monthly expenses today. Thus I don't have a land line or data plan as I have cell (and skype) and internet at my house with access to thousands of free wifi hot spots.

Thus I think if the touch 3g rumor is true, there will be 2 versions: one with 3g and one without, like the ipad.

Is that all you can tough talk with? Parents?

I want to be able to afford other things and not have pay monthly on every damn thing that I have.

Now stop trolling by saying everyone is a kid, lives with their parents. You are just getting run over constantly by the number of people going up against your argument and you bring parents and people being kids. Maybe your the child.....

Which leads me back to my point, it would effect iPhone sells in the future.

I'm sure there's people that's willing to pay to get out of a contract for a device they DON'T (Required by a contract) have to pay monthly for (iPod Touch "3g")

I'm really excited about this now, just to see what happens!

I agree, but I think that if this new ipod nano/shuffle comes out that would mean that they want to streamline the iPod line since right now there are 2 many options and :apple: always wants simplicity, especially for their new customers; I think right now the ipod line has too many choices of size and style and the normal joe or mom wouldn't be able to decide which to pick; my prediction is that they will make this new smaller ipod nano a reality and eliminate the shuffle altogether from the line and just follow that same line of thinking for the rest of the line!

I believe that it would only minimally effect iphone sales. My bet would be even though there are people who are willing to get out of a contract, this is a very small percentage. The whole allure of the iphone was that it combined an ipod with a phone. There were PDA's that used data plans before the iphone and look what happened to those. I'm sure the ipad cannibalized iphone sales (very very slightly) but really it a nonissue to apple. It'll probably be the same with the itouch if it were to get 3g

If the iPod Touch gets 3G it will not be on AT&T. It will be on T-Mobile.

I don't think so since T-mobile uses 1700 Y 2100 (dif. one than in europe) for their 3G thus making the device work only for a few small networks worldwide, which is why they keep coming back to AT&T since theirs it's the same range of 3G as 3G around the world so only one type of ipod touch they would have to make on the factory if it came w/ 3G ....

I always think about this as well. I can see the "iOS" section coming really soon.

maybe, and it will be broken down in to categories.

Well with the iPad you get two models (on top of three "submodels" ie; storage) wifi and wifi+3G. I could see them doing the same with the iPod Touch.

Apple wouldn't release a 3G ipod touch, They make to much off the iPhone to do that.

They didn't even mention anything about OS4 for iPad. So i guess we are not seeing OS4 for iPad on Sept 1st. Waiting game is still on...
