I fully support the new iPod Nano Touch.

They should put the App Store on it. Lightweight widgets that do simple tasks, and small games.

Will it still have a video camera? Seems unlikely. Kind of crazy how often the iPod Nano design changes compared to the other product lines.

But it's still a hot seller regardless. Plus you don't know what apple wants.

No I don't know what Apple wants, but neither do you. I just think the idea of a 3g iPod is ridiculous, it has no place in their current scheme to upsell people.

Here is the current upsell scheme:

You buy an iPod nano, then you want more features and screen, so then
You buy an iPod touch, then you want more camera and 3G, so then
You buy an iPhone, then you want more screen, so then
You buy an iPad

Similar to the MacBook upsell and iMac upsell and how they have lower end models and higher end models. You get people wanting more so they keep buying more.

If you remove the need for 3G in an iPod touch, you take a major hit in sales of iPhones, especially since iPod touches will probably gain pretty good cameras.

Just because you want to keep your existing phone and buy an iPod touch doesn't change the fact that Apple wants you to buy an iPhone. They especially want to sell you an iPhone after you have bought an iPod touch and you discover you really wanted an iPhone just a few months later.

Plus it doesn't work over 3G yet anyway, so it is not a big deal.

That is somewhat disingenuous. It most certainly does work, Apple and AT&T simply restrict its usage due to the expected large amount of extra strain it would put on AT&T's already stretched network. Jailbroken users have been able to use Facetime over 3G for quite some time. People here like to argue that "it's to preserve the user experience since cell coverage varies and could cause choppy FaceTime calls".

Over here in Europe my cell provider offers upload rates that are more than enough to sustain FaceTime. My home DSL connection gets 10Mbps down and 0.85 Mbps up to Zürich. Doing the same Speedtest.net test on my phone using 3G and the same Zürich server, I get 5Mbps down and 2.25Mbps up.

So in actuality, my phone data connection better supports FaceTime than most DSL connection upstreams do. It has almost nothing to do with bandwidth capability and everything to do with availability and strain on the networks.

And yes, I realize cell coverage is not static and therefore even with superb bandwidth you might still get more choppiness than with Wi-Fi, but you're also not chained to a certain small area like you are when you call over Wi-Fi.

mic?

But who's going to need a phone if your iPod Touch has connectivity everywhere and you have quality, FREE apps like Skype and Vonage Mobile for making phone calls?

Uhm, how are you going to talk if you don't have a mic? Or are you able to plug in a mic? I doubt it ...

A'rite.. a'rite.. kerm down .. kerm down! Before you all get too excited. Think on. The Apple Education Free iPod Touch offer doesnt end 'til September 7th. Now is Apple really going to let us have a NEW iPod Touch or keep selling off the old ones til then? I think itll be the latter ... so breath easy .. you have two weeks yet.
They did this two years ago... so sit back and budget your new iPod Touch purchase from next month's pay packet ....

and here's a joke...

I was walking thro' town the other day .. this tramp came up to me and said "S'cuse me mate .. could you lend me £5.00 'til pay day?"
I said "When's pay day?"
He replied "Well mate ... you're the one with the job ...."

And on that bombshell ... worry ye not .. you've got half a month to cough up the readies .... Cheers and hope this has been of some help ;)

3G iPod touch won't happen, the iPhone 4 will be cannibalised hugely. 3G iPad didnt't cannibalise the sales as much as this would, frankly a stupid idea fromma business perspective.

No 3G for the iPod touch that is retarted if they do that I will buy one get the 3G and then hit it with a hammer

Does anyone else see the this? or is it just me? Especially with someone who has 'Dr.' in his user name...... oh the irony....

anyhoo, I do think it could be a good seller for Apple with a 3g Touch, there's plenty of kids out there that won't get an iphone as it's too expensive, but will get a touch.

There has been a 3g iPod touch since 2008.... And I already didn't get the point of having both an iPod Touch AND a phone, now people are supposed to do that with 3g capabilities? I guess people can waist money nowadays... IT'S CALLED AN IPHONE IDIOTS!!!!

The only problem is that people might not want to pay monthly for a phone they rarely use to make phone calls. I use the pay & go system because I rarely need to make calls and I mostly just text, which is almost free anyway. So an iPhone for me would be too expensive, since I would have to pay for a premium phone service that I won't even use. Now an iPod Touch would make sense for me, but the problem with it is that in 99% of cases, there are no free WiFi networks around, except at home, but then you might as well just use your computer. So the iPod Touch would greatly benefit from 3G, since it would allow people to only pay for the internet and not for phone calls. Moreover, I'd rather have an iPod Touch that has 3G and a small Nokia with a top up SIM than have to pay ridiculous amounts of money every single month for almost two years for a service I do not use.

The iPad is a completely different device, not only in terms of use, but form factor. Even if you could make calls on an iPad, no one is going to lug around a device that large as their primary cell or VoIP device. Aside from maybe a few pompous douchebags.

With VoIP use climbing more and more, there exists a legitimate concern with a 3G iPod Touch cannibalizing a larger portion of iPhone4 sales than it already does. I get 3G data coverage everywhere I go on a daily basis, and with high data transmission speeds. Using purely VoIP is an enticing option for many people who spend the majority of their time in or around cities.

One can only hope that carriers be relegated to nothing but dumb pipes in the future, the same way landline internet providers are. Everyone I meet is using less minutes/SMS/MMS, and more and more data. Texts are sent with Google Talk, pictures are emailed, and a good number of calls are done with VoIP.

This square device is NO iPod nano.
It is the iPod shuffle. It is i bit shorther than The shuffle but wider than the shuffle due the screen.

The leaked cases show also a opening for a clip on the back of this device.

I know this again.

Which leads me back to my point, it would effect iPhone sells in the future.

I'm sure there's people that's willing to pay to get out of a contract for a device they DON'T (Required by a contract) have to pay monthly for (iPod Touch "3g")

I'm really excited about this now, just to see what happens!

I have to disagree, the entire point of the iPhone is that it does everything, ipod, internet device, phone, camera etc...all in one. That's the main selling point a device that does everything. An ipod touch with 3g doesn't and peeps will have to carry around another device.

If anything, I feel that it'll encourage kids to want an iPhone when they can afford a contract.

That's exactly how I feel. Upselling is a huge part of what makes Apple so successful.

Hint: Apple has a patent which describes a touch-control-input on the back of the device.

That is an interesting idea, but I think on the new iPod nano if it's a tiny screen like is rumored, they will want to put a clip on the back like the shuffle. That kind of kills any chance of there being this "backtouch" input method.

exactly, the iphone has a certain status now, everyone wants one, they will make do with what they can afford, which will be the 3g itouch, but I think the minute they can afford that desirable iPhone, they'll snap it up.

Looks more like a merging of the nano and shuffle + touch rather than strictly a remodelling of the nano, though it would certainly make sense for them to re-use the established name.

I'm certainly interested by this as it makes sense in many ways; people who want a bigger/better screen will go for an iPod Touch or iPhone I think, there's not much point having a middle-ground that's a mixture of small form factor and large screen as it just ends up poor at both.

A small screen iPod makes sense as well as the iPod shuffle has become so abstract and unusable that it may as well have this style of device instead. Though personally I loved the square shuffle with proper buttons as you just clipped it on and off you went, but not everyone can get used to the way you use it as it's difficult to get to a song you want.

Really hope that small touch screen is actually an Apple watch instead, Bluetooth enabled and link it to my iPhone and I would buy it in a heartbeat! Wishful thinking though haha.

I would have guessed it to be the viewfinder on something that can only fit one camera so they could add facetime.

If that's the new iPod Nano I think I'll be getting the current generation ... I'd thought we'd moved on to widescreen for good?

Don't see a 3G ipod coming. It just wouldn't fit in the current lineup with the iPhone.

Who would pay $300 more just so they could get the phone part?

All those people getting an iPhone currently.

Hey, the iPod touch 3G already exists, get an unlocked iPhone and a data contract like the ones for the iPad and voilà you have an iPod touch 3G.

An iPod touch 32 GB costs $400 in my country, an iPhone 32 GB unlocked costs $900. With the iPad, the 3G+GPS chips cost a premium of $150 (in my country), with the iPhone/iPod the premium is $500.

Apple will not release an iPod touch 3G while they are still able to charge such high prices for the iPhone.
