You must be kidding me. The last seed, 8a393, is completely unusable due to its bugs. It kernal panics and finder locks up constantly. It is far far less stable than Windows XP.

Apple's internal builds are usually farther along than developer builds, sometimes much farther...

To add to that, kernel panics are a sign of potentially bad hardware or a bad directory. If you are testing a version of Tiger and getting panics, please tell Apple what panics you are receiving so that the drivers don't panic as frequently. For reasons for panics, see my FAQ:

For the folks who pre-ordered OS X, did any receive it earlier than the release date?

I'm asking because I don't believe the Apple Store (or any reseller) will be selling the educational version (If they didn't care iLife and iWork at a discount...), and I don't want to wait for my university bookstore to stock it.

Usually the only place you can get Edu releases besides a bookstore is on the Apple Store Education website (and maybe by phone). No normal resellers or the Apple Store (retail) will sell it to you for the edu discounted price.

Student members also get the final... I think(??).
From what I've heard, they used to give out developer's previews too. Apparently too many students were rather liberal in their interpretation of the NDA. :p

It really depends on what you need.

If you're fine with your current machine and can hold out until the beginning of summer, I would definitely go with waiting. Panther is going to be depreciated by the time you get used to it.

Jaguar + piracy

Strictly out of curiousity:

Does anyone know if Apple usually requires a license fee for their OS'? I thought it was strange that they required a product key for iWork but no iLife- guess they pick and choose what piracy they don't mind?

I for one am against software piracy (and even if I wasn't, it's not like I am going to speak out in favor of it when apple's lawyers continuously cruise through rumor sites on their lunch hour looking for lawsuits to start! )

Well... I'm a "student" and I respect the NDA on Tiger and the other software! ;)

Well, I have gotten real use to my new Powerbook and Panther. But I have to say I will be one of the ones that orders Tiger the first day they start taking orders.
Spotlight and Dashboard would be worth half the price of the upgrade alone! ;)

So many times, it happens too fast
You trade your passion for glory
Don't lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive

It's the eye of the tiger, it's the thrill of the fight
Risin' up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he's watchin' us all with the eye of the tiger

Face to face, out in the heat
Hangin' tough, stayin' hungry
They stack the odds, till we take to the street
For the kill with the skill to survive

It's the eye of the tiger, it's the thrill of the fight
Risin' up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he's watchin' us all with the eye of the tiger

Risin' up, straight to the top
Had the guts, got the glory
Went the distance, now I'm not gonna stop
Just a man and his will to survive

It's the eye of the tiger, it's the thrill of the fight
Risin' up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night

Very funny-I also think it's a bannable offense. Seriously, is eWeek a reliable source?

I must admit that I am eager to have Tiger. I'm happy about the rumored plan too. April 1 will tease us and possibly confirm that Tiger will be out on April 15, so April 1 will be exciting in itself. Furthermore, maybe they'll post a delayed stream of the announcement on April 1. We can then pre-order, hopefully, at apple.com, so we can guarantee our by April 15 delivery.

Then, one month from today, we'll have Tiger in our paws. I'm ready! Spotlight, Dashboard, new Mail, new Safari, Core Image, etc. I can't wait! :) I'm off on Friday the 15th of April, so I can play with it all day!

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but this year is the 2004th anniversary of April 1st, so it makes perfect sense to announce Tiger on that day

Interesting observation, beanregarder. I would have thought that Apple would look at that relative to the date they became a company.

This has propably been asked million times already, but still: I just received my Mac Mini yesterday (my very first Mac EVER!). Is there any possibility I could get a free update to Tiger :)?

I doubt it. _Sometimes_ they offer free updates to people who bought a machine after a new OS was announced, but not before.

Apple just posted a new Tiger seed, 8A414, on the ADC (Select/Premier) download site. The bug list, although different than the last seed, still shows some real issues.

Still not gonna happen!

People, this is NOT confirmation of anything. eWeek is just repeating the original rumor from ThinkSecret, nothing more. How do I know? Take a look at this:

http://apple.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=142245&cid=11920243
Given Think Secret's excellent track record and my own knowledge of the care with which Nick Ciarelli researches his reports, I personally believe that the site is in fact a "reputable news source," and this report is at least as plausible as an Apple-related scoop from any bigger outlet.

At my shop, we're certainly going to pursue this report with vigor -- largely on the strength of Think Secret's record for accuracy.

Based on continuing reports of major bugs in the very latest Tiger builds, I'd say Apple would be foolish to actually release next month. I don't buy this rumor.

(ugh, I missed this yesterday, so nobody'll see this post and the damage, causing frenzied hope, has already been done...) :(

But... but... but... Uh, Apple could fix the bugs and then send the Golden Master back trough a wormhole to today to start producing the retail versions. Yeah!!
Well, in all fairness, the GM Panther seed was made available on ADC about 2 weeks before it was available in retail stores, so I guess we could see another 15 days worth of work on the build prior to it going to press. As others have said, the seeds we see may not be absolutely current with internal builds, but who knows?
