Question for developers:

I am a developer, have been since June '04. Occassionally I get the latest Panther disks in the mail. I wasn't a developer though when the last OS was released. Do developers get the latest OS sent to them when it is updated......did any of you who were developers when Panther came out automatically get sent the disks from Apple for no additional charge?

I'm just curious b/c I have ordered both Jaguar and Panther the day they were announced, so I want to know if I should hold off on that if it is announced at the beginning of April.

Thanks!

ADC members are supposed to get the Tiger release for free.

You must be kidding me. The last seed, 8a393, is completely unusable due to its bugs. It kernal panics and finder locks up constantly. It is far far less stable than Windows XP.
What would I be kidding about?

The last seed was in February, I'm sure they are not releasing seed 8A393 to the general public. I have not used that seed - I will take your word that it had kernel panics and locked up frequently making it unstable and perhaps unusable. However, software is a funny thing you can have two or three bugs in your code that cause instability and hangs throughout a product. Maybe fixing a handful of bugs did the trick, we really don't know - we're not on Apple's OS team.

If you are that worried then don't be an early adopter. Wait and see what happens. You will hear of any significant issues on these forums and on Apple's support site. Once any serious issues are resolved with a maintenance release or two and you feel comfortable, then upgrade. That's my plan for Tiger. But to assume Apple will release an unsable operating system because the last seed you used was unusable for you is a solid argument.

Take a leaf out of MS book!

If Apple was more like microsoft, the world and his dog would already have the final release version running on their computers!

Cool! All you early adopters be sure to let us know about all the bugs, since I am sure there will be plenty. Still, an awesome OS update this will be. Widgets rock!

True. I wonder how many updates they can fit in between 10.3.9 and 10.4.0 (maybe some 10.3.9.1, 10.3.9.2, etc)

This has been covered endlessly in other threads, but what the heck why not one more time.

10.3.9
10.3.10
10.3.11
10.3.12
etc

or
10.3.9.1; 10.3.9.2......
10.3.10.1 .......
10.3.11.3
etc
10.3.9 does not mean that the next update would be 10.4
its version. major release. minor release. patch

Not a chance...

I have two words for you regarding 10.4 being ready to ship in April:

NO WAY!

I have been receiving builds of the OS for some time and it is no where near ready. June is going to be pushing it. The only thing that could possibly be coming out April 15th is 10.3.9.

Nice try, but no. The sources are on crack.

I haven't thought that Tiger would be ready on April 15th either. Still think that Steve will keep to his word on the first half of 2005. I'm still pushing for a release date of June 24th, why not follow the prior scenario.

Back up your data, upgrade, and enjoy. If there is a problem, you have it all backed up, right?

Bill
That's the point. The people who were really screwed by the firewire bug in 10.3.0 had their back-ups on their firewire drive - so guess what? The bug destroyed their back-up as well.

Hardly the 'Awwww well, just use your back-up' scenario you describe.

They can't ship FCP 5.0 at NAB in April without a complementary OS to go with it. So most likely from sources, a Tiger rollout should be available by end of April at the latest.

Even if it hits at the end of April, still thinking that the release date will be on the 24th.

We won't have to worry about the firewire problem after 10.3.9.

The worst possible scenario is announcing FCP 5.0 but not shipping for another 2 months. Given Apple's track record, this may just happen.

The whole topic of whether people get Tiger straight away, whenever it comes out, is really down to them. However it cannot be that buggy otherwise why would Apple release it? I thought this company were proud of their quality image? Also this is Apple we are talking about, not Microsoft! We dont want to wait 5+ years for an OS that is already out of date! Anyhoo, how perfect are most OSs on first release, despite how long they take to develop?? Nothing is perfect.

I can really understand large pro customers and businesses wanting to wait however, they do not have the luxoury of an immediate swap for the very latest thing like the normal everyday home user with money does!!

Also, on the whole topic of whether this is real or not, I can understand Apple wanting to fool TS and reveille their leaks, but why drag eWeek into this, who as far as I know have been pretty quite for Apple!...unless eWeek was not Apples intension and all this is indeed a stunt. But ofcourse TS could be the source, as my fellow forumer "uae" before has mentioned!! If not TS, another rumour site. These circles can be vicious!! Lets hope they dont bite us in the ass!!

Apple released osx and it wasn't ready for prime time. Poor printing, poor cdr/dvd support?!?, weak drivers, etc. Of course, things were a little different back then, Apple had to get something out the door. But osx wasn't widely recommended for everyone until the 10.2 release. Even then, there were some reservations. Some would say that 10.3 was really the top to bottom, rock solid release of osx.

Then again, I've had every release of osx including the beta, I'll be getting this release too. But I fully expect to have a few os issues here and there.

AND, does anyone know what the hardware requirements are going to be for Tiger???? Am I missing something here, or is that still a mystery. Mostly I'm wondering about core image and core video. Have they figured out what is going to be supported?

i hope there's a nice flash intro on the apple page the day tiger is released..

complete with "eye of the tiger" music....

dant...... dant dant dant........ dant dant dant....... dant dant daaaaaaaant.

I am a paying member....but my year ends June 18th and I'm not sure if I'm going to renew my ADC membership.

I thought it is identical to the Panther requirements:
G3 (built-in USB), 128 MB RAM.

EDIT (from the readme):
"Note: The Mac OS X Tiger Developer Preview is available in English only. System requirements You must have a Macintosh computer with • a PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor • a DVD drive • built-in FireWire • at least 128 MB of RAM • a built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer • at least 2 GB of disk space available, or 3.5 GB if you install the developer tools If you see a message in the Installer that you do not have enough disk space to install Mac OS X, you can deselect items to save space."

Core image and core audio will not be the determiner of the hardware requirements for Tiger. (Just like Quartz Extreme wasn't for Jaguar)..

There used to be a list of video chips which supported full hardware acceleration of Core Image on Apple's Tiger preview pages, but this list was removed a few months ago. Basically the supported list was an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro or higher, or an nVidia GeForce FX 5200 and higher. A notable exclusion from the list was the ATI Radeon 9200, currently used in the iBook, eMac and Mac mini. After the web page with the list disappeared, people began to speculate that Apple was revising its supported GPU list because of changes to the Core Image code, although a cynic might say that Apple was removing the list simply so that potential iBook, eMac and Mac mini purchasers didn't get discouraged by the fact that their hardware would not run the next version of OS X with all the bells and whistles turned on.

Whatever the reasoning, I don't think anyone knows for sure at this date. A few beta testers have commented that some of Tiger's Core Image driven effects are toned down on Radeon 9200 equipped systems, indicating that this GPU still does not completely support Core Image hardware acceleration. Apple hasn't resurrected their Core Image-supported GPU list, but with only a few weeks to go until the rumoured Tiger announcement date rolls around, you won't have long to wait and find out the official answer.

The iBook and eMac could easily receive an update just prior to Tiger to a card that is(was) supported. Maybe even the 3 month old Mac mini...

Hopefully they are making core work for the older chip sets instead.

April 1 makes sense to announce the release date.

It is, afterall, Apple's birthday (Apple was incorporated on April 1, 1979)
