Because a good bit of people don't want to pay $1800 for an underpowered system whose specs are pretty much locked up at the factory settings. For $200 more, you could get a MBP, or for $800 less, you could get the WhiteBook, or for $500 less, you could get the base uMB.

And yet many people buy or are going to buy the MBA, like me.

Why? Because it's not all about specs or price...it's about ultraportable thinness/lightness linked with reasonable performance on the road...a MB feels much heavier than the MBA, and the same happens when the comparison is made with the MBP. Besides, no other notebook has that with the industrial design edge that Apple offers.

Unfortunately, most PC makers have no clue about that, and keep presenting fugly machines that have 174-1 card readers or whatever...99% of us don't need and have never wished for these kinds of crap; go figure.

I wouldn't expect this model of iPhone to take the platform in some revolutionary new direction. Apple is still new to the market and is sticking with a winning formula. Incremental upgrades and new features will be how Apple builds its presence in the cell market.

People expecting 5G internet, OLED screens, HD cameras, and holographic projectors tomorrow are setting themselves up for disappointment. Or, perhaps, false outrage just for sport.

OLED wouldn't be a radical change visually. Heck, the new ZUNE has one.
But you are right that they should stick to what is currently a success. There is little reason for them to make a radical change. It's not as if the current design is stale.

Foof 4 thought

If video chat is part of the next phone this may also explain why AT&T said no to Sling knowing full well they would need the extra muscle to make that new feature even work on the less than stellar network.

I much prefer the black trim. The chrome trim on the current iphone looks great.. until it gets scratched to hell and looks like crap.
The fact that Apple can't manufacture anything where the chrome looks OK after more than 2 days of use shouldn't be held against chrome.

They could replace it with a brushed aluminium trim if the chrome is that much of a problem... as long as there's some sort of metal trim, it'll look fine. But this whole monochrome deal looks like poo. It looks like some sort of dummy iPhone you buy as a toy for your kids. It's one step closer to the cheapo look of Palm Pre, at a time when iPhone needs it the least.
You and I have had some disagreements on here in the laptop hunters threads, but I found myself reading this post and nodding along in agreement.
Sounds plausible -- I think I had disagreements with everyone in the laptop hunters threads. ;)

If it's charcoal color like in the best iPhone mockup photo, it'll look good enough to stand out. But if it's black on black I agree it's too boring.

The problem is most MMS is done with pictures. To this point, the attempts at video MMS have been poor and not really worth the time. If Apple figures out how to get the videos compressed enough to where sending them by MMS is not a nag, I certainly can see AT&T saying "Wait, back the truck up. You will be pushing more data through our network - the perfect reasoning why we should increase the price." And people will pay it. They know they will. I can see, literally, each new iPhone release bringing with it an increase in cost on the billing side. Next year will be 4G or whatever increase in speed, then the next year will be a new technologic advance on the OS/iPhone side, so on and so on.

Ok, just looked at the current unlimited messaging. It includes video. I guess AT&T could have a "unlimited messaging for iPhone" only and charge more...I just don't see it happening, but that is just my opinion.

If this is real, I'm liking the matte finish on the back, but I'm not digging the monochrome bezel. Looks cheaper than the current chrome bezel. I wouldn't mind seeing a brushed metal finish. The dark bezel looks too much like the iPod touch - where's the "premium" differentiation?

just buy an aftermarket bezel.

I've just picked up my iPod touch 1G and held it next to the screenshots of the "new iPhone", and they are remarkably similar ... I'm a bit bemused as to why Apple would go back to a previous design for a new product.

The chrome bezel used to separate the iPhone from the first iPod touch. Then the second iPod touch was launched, complete with iPhone 3G shaping on the back and a chrome bezel, looking 99% identical to the iPhone when looking front on.

And now, for some reason, the "iPhone Video" has taken on a charcoal bezel identical to the first generation iPod touch, almost as if to differentiate it from the iPod touch once more.

It would be amusing if all these photos turn out to be fake and the new iPhone retains the same look as usual, but I do agree that the best looking iPhone was the first model with the aluminum back. The 3G added the nice curved back, resulting in a thinner feel, much like the move from iPod touch 1G to 2G, but I have always thought original iPhone was the best design.

Why are these spy shots always the worst quality? I mean does everyone carry around a $5 disposable cameras, or are these all from ****** 1MP cell phone cameras?

I for one hope these 3 and 5 MP iPhone camera rumors are real, so we can at least see some better spy shots in the future.

If the pictures are true... this is what we got

stacy.gif

And the chattel of Apple will eat it up.

Eh, not really. The 3G iPhone is supposed to have a lot of new features, it's just the bezel is going to look different. Minor cosmetic changes happen with every generation leap (2G introducted plastic back, 3G looks to introduce black bezel).

So true man!! It doesn't make sense!!!

So what? That means it's a failure?

The video chat feature only will be useful if you can videochat with people using a computer.. I'll use it, im always videochatting with my family on skype, because nobody has a AIM account, etc.

Still, hoping for the front-camera even if the video chat doesn't come.

I could vision the iPhone being used for video conferencing on the road instead of a bulky laptop (of course the iPhone would never replace a full functioning portable, but for those who simply need a PDA/Phone/Video device, it would be a great all-in-one).

I've never used Skype, but I'm reading/hearing more about it every day. Is it really as great as everyone claims? I'll have to try it.

May I suggest looking where the sun doesn't shine!!!!!

........ - where's the "premium" differentiation?

IPhone is a tool there is nothing premium about it. It is not bling and it certainly doesn't exist to make you look cool. Which by the way is pretty hard to do after making the expressions above.

I agree!!
Skype it's ok, i guess. Is one of the few options for MAC users videochatting with others using PC. The mac version has too many flaws. I'm still waiting for Microsoft to put the videochat option on MSN.

Need another one.

I bought the 1st gen in Aug 07. Then I got 3G last July, and about a month ago it started to crack on the back towards the 30 pin connection. :( Now I'm needing a new one bad. New iPhone please! <Sticks hand out and opens, closes...opens, closes> :D

I don't know how to start a new thread because I am new to this, but I saw a link on iTunes that goes to 3 songs that are on the Shuffle Ad but I am not aware of any iPod Shuffle Ads??

It showed up at the top of the home screen of the iTunes Store, in one of those 3 boxes. I took a screenshot but I don't know how to add the picture to this post. :(
