I am the only one who finds no use for a front facing camera? How will you see what you're taking a picture of? Only good for taking pictures of yourself, what good is that?

Scoop: I just heard it comes 2 new features to take advantage on the front facing camera:

1. Automatic ear wax/infection check (iEar) while you talk.

2. Automatic app rating system using face detection (iRate). Automatically checks every minute you are running an app. Can detect happy, sad, angry (irate). No more manual rating of apps allowed! The only thing holding back this feature was that at first it could be fooled by forcing a smile while playing, say, Spore. But they worked out how to check if you're lying using a new plug=in (iPhony).

Given the increasing reports that Apple will be pushing "video" as a killer feature of the new iPhone, it seems feasible that Apple could introduce video-chat.

"video" as a killer feature of a phone in 2009?? hardly, unless it's hd. even then it wouldn't be a novelty.

meh...

ok...im not super excited..

honestly what more can they add?!

video chat doesnt really excite me.. i think i might hold back on the new iphone and stick with my old one..

but, it does look nicer.. but, i personally like the first iphone better..

Fake. This is the pic he used to make the homescreen.

But i must say it is VERY well done! and I think the black to grey thing is just his shadow too.

Has this photo been posted yet? This is suposedly the new iPhone with the front facing camera, using iChat or something similiar.

Actually, if the other rumour showing only 16GB and 32GB models is true, it seems the video is a lock in. Otherwise, why no 8GB model anymore? I can't believe Apple's margin increases dramatically and the price difference would be a killer. Offering models with different storage sizes isn't going to cannibalise sales, so there has to be another reason (unless the market really isn't interested in 8GB anymore, which again I find hard to believe).

Anyway, "killer" is relative. Because of the system ecosystem, to people who are locked in to Apple its a revelation (killer feature). A reason to upgrade. They don't care (or possibly even know) that it (in thise case, video) has been a feature of other phones etc because they are locked in and so those products have been off the radar. The definition of "killer" is also different for people who are outside of the ecosystem. They want in, but currently they see limitations (eg. no MMS, cut/paste, physical keyboard blah blah) as knockout blows. Each time one of those obstacles is removed, it becomes a "killer" feature to some set of on-tilt wannabe customers.

Sure, iPhone has a long way to go. In some measures it is the top of the pile, eg. app store penetration, share of mobile browsers etc. But the "killer feature" that knocks out the iphone "killers" already exists (the ecosystem, the OS, the appstore, the coolness factor). It's just a matter of removing the negatives one by one.

I don't know if these pics are real but gearlive says that there will be a front facing camera for video. They're generally not the kind of website that throws bull around and has had official interviews with Apple executives in the past when many other tech blogs could not.

Sidenote: John Biggs of Crunchgear said he heard from a source who's seen the iPhone and he said that that the Apple logo does light up. It would be nice if this were true.

If both of these things came to fruition, it will be an early Christmas for a lot of Apple fans.

Here is a new iPhone for you:

There are no major change's,
the phone is little slimer no chrome frame,
and of course it has a better CPU Processor it futures more ram and front end camera right under the ear speaker,
for the rest you have to wait until tomorrow :)

Unless Apple and AT&T are willing to give some awesome discounts for current iPhone owners, I can't see myself actually picking this one up. The big seller for me when it came to the iPhone 3G was 3G. This time, it seems as if the only extra things that we'll be getting are (A) Cosmetic changes, (B) Video, (C) Magnotrometer, (D) Faster processing (E) Maybe a front facing camera. Considering I couldn't care less what my phone looks like as well as I don't give the slightest crap about video recording, the only interesting features for me are the latter three. However, even though these would be nice features to have, I just can't see myself shoveling out another $200 for them. Sorry apple, maybe next time.

As long as it has wireless n, I'll be quite happy, and I'll be eBaying my 3G to get the new one. I really hope they put Nike+ in it, too. It's so silly that you can only use an iPod Touch or a nano. Here I have a $300 iPhone and a $250 iPod Classic, and I cant use Nike+ with either one. I have an old nano, but damn.

I don't understand the excitement of a front facing camera. Are you really going to hold the phone in front of your face to video conference? That doesn't sound like a very comfortable position. I can't imagine those calls lasting long.

why are everyone saying the new iphone doesnt make them change from the 3G?

The new iphone will be much better then the 3G, removing the cheap plastic casting to metal and adding faster processor etc will be cherry on the cake.

Remember forthcoming apps will be running much better on this new iphone video the 3G.

Neither is holding a phone to your ear but we still do it. I imagine people would use it 10% of the time just because of the effect it would have on battery life. But that 10% can be useful.

OK my source just let slip that in addition to the new iEar and iRate (include iPhony plugin) the new phone will also be able to lip read using the front facing camera. This is very useful in high noise environments. In addition, the other party will also be lip-read and subtitles will appear on the screen. This way you don't even have to stop listening to your music when a call comes in. Your iPhone could be docked into a stereo and music pumping at club volumes and you'll still be able to make a call with the other (iPhone) person. It's called iSay.

Riiight..... is your source your own imagination?

No metal. Plastic. Better signal strength. No metal. Mmmm.... cherries on cake.

I use bluetooth 99% of the time. But as long as people find the front camera useful, I hope the phone has it for you. Just not a feature I will ever understand. I can't wait to see a person walking down the street using it.....hopefully they don't bump into anything.:D

well if you consider killer feature in the context of established "lock-in" customers, the killer feature needs to be such that it makes the customers want to upgrade. i kind of doubt "video" is such a feature - after all those customers who considered that as a killer feature wouldn't have chosen iphone in the first place, right? it might be ok for customers upgrading anyway, though.

but existing iphone user base is minuscule compared to the cellular user base so if we consider video as a killer feature in the market place as a whole, such a marketing proposition would be no go, at least outside the us. us is sometimes a little behind in the cellular gadgets, so it might be successful there.

an add "iphone, now with video!" would not do good for the apple brand in europe or in asia.
