As much as I love the Beatles, (my dad pretty much fed them to me as a child!), I am going to be really disappointed with this announcement if it is to do with the Beatles.

I already have their back catalogue and have no intention of buying them again purely because they are on iTunes....!

If had re-bought all my ripped CDs from my collection i would be be out thousands of £££s right now...!

I for one am hoping its some sort of new feature in iTunes, more than a Beatles announcement.

Are there any announcements for anybody under the age of 50?

If The Beatles, this announcement is for people under the age of 50. Those over already own the albums on CD or vinyl. If not, that means they've gone decades without buying, and will not be convinced by digital downloads either.

Okay honestly if THIS is their big announcement then I am honestly not buying an Apple product ever again. If they really are this deceitful to make such a big deal out of something very few people care about then Apple is either stupid or bathing in arrogance.

Here's my little observation:

Those who find Jobs/Apple to be arrogant are actually harboring arrogant personality tendencies themselves. It's a truism that we often strongly react to personality traits in others that we dislike in ourselves.

Evidence #1: do you really think a threat to never buy another Apple product matters a whit to Apple, or will make them quake in their boots, for fear of losing YOUR sale? Because if you DO, then you could teach Steve a lesson or two about hubris.....

But arguably the company has been taking advantage of their growth to shove products and announcements down people throats to cause hype.

"Shove products down people's throats"? Really? Hyperbolize much?

Last I checked, consumers had to fork over their cold hard $$$ CASH for the privilege of owning Apple gear, and no one was FORCING anyone to BUY Apple products. I seem to recall people waiting in LINE to buy the iPhone 4.

As far as "causing hype", Apple released an announcement: they didn't CAUSE the hysteria. Fact is, people like YOU and I went to forums to post our 2 cents worth, and many here are getting whipped into a frenzy (although the frenzy seems more about the Apple haters airing their disappointment than anything, over an announcement they haven't even seen).

Which is oddly ironic, if you've ever seen footage of the hysteria caused by the public appearance of the Beatles in their hey-day (@ Hollywood Bowl, or Shea Stadium).

Just remember, the hysteria of teenage fans can solely be blamed on the fans, as they fainted and screamed only because THEY allowed themselves to lose control to a mob mentality: the responsibility rests solely on the individuals.

Cluttering the media with something as minor as a new place to buy one bands music is pretty obnoxious.

Who's cluttering the media, again? Media sites and news outlets wouldn't carry the story unless they knew it would attract eyes: look at you, contributing to the page hits/impressions on this site. The irony is those who post to protest the hype simply are fueling hype.

Bottom line: you vote with your mouse. If you don't like hype (which is short for 'hyperbole'), then it does little to combat it by doing anything other than IGNORING it (which includes not reading it).

Personally, I don't now care what the announcement it.

Whatever it is can't beat the entertainment of reading people over react on this thread.

Aside from if you rate the Beatles or not (sorry i don't...just my opinion dont shoot me down for it:)) this would make a rather poor announcement from Apple. Not sure how it would make it a day to remember even if you were a fan?

I would have thought it would warranted just a mention at the end...'one last thing...' not a whole event to itself.

I guess we will see but really want an Apple style Spotify pleaaaase...

My prediction is that this is actually about the Beatles appearing on Ping. Awesome.

Seriously though, those saying they don't see anyone buying Beatles tracks these days is maybe forgetting how well Beatles CDs are still selling, ignoring the one-track impulse buyers (most iTunes sales are singles, not albums), and underestimating the power of Apple's marketing machine. If Apple start doing a big marketing push on the Beatles, then you can be sure it's going to drive a new/renewed interest.

I also find it ironic that there's people on these forums who would buy anything with the Apple logo on who can't understand that there are Beatles fans out there who are the same with Beatles releases.

Personally, I agree that this would be a disappointment, but don't underestimate its significance.

My prediction is that The Beatles will reform and release a new album via iTunes exclusively!

New line-up will be:

Steve Jobs - rhythm guitar and vocals

Phil Schiller - bass guitar

Scott Forstall - drums

Bob Mansfield - lead guitar

Unforgettable!

I'd buy some tracks if it is the Beatles. :)

I don't see the problem, it would be a big announcement for iTunes.. Its funny seeing peoples reactions though.

So true. Apple and the beatles are probably the two most iconic brands in the world. !!
But I ain't buying albums Ive already got.

If it is about The Beatles it will be to launch a new cloud service.

There is no way they would make such a big deal about this if it was just The Beatles.

There isn't an 'event'.

It just tells you to "Check back here tomorrow for an exciting announcement from iTunes".

http://www.apple.com/

fair point!

Cant help feeling a little disappointed though...i guess if there was a big change to iTunes (such as subscriptions) then there would be a larger event, in which they can out line it in more detail and do the usual x amount of iPods sold; y amount of tracks downloaded etc

I do not doubt that the Beatles will sell loads on iTunes and anything that increase choice is a good thing! (glass half full ;))

Ah, so this is just Beatles then? Already got every album they have, and ripped my favourites into iTunes as either full quality AIFF or lossless.

Needs Jony Ive to be singing as well. He can elongate words at the end of verses with eyes wide open.

The reason we won't forget is because all Beatles tracks will be free downloads!! Awesome!

Its not just The Beatles. Do they seriously think people don't own Beatles albums already.

Its bigger than just The Beatles.

Good point!

Perhaps Steve will leave that for "...one more thing..."

Johny Ive - backing vocals ----->

I tried to like the Beatles, but failed. I still have a lot of respect for them as they revolutionised music, and there will always be the odd song that I listen to and enjoy, but not a big fan overall.

Would be seriously disappointed if this was the only thing they announced, but the thing that sticks out in my mind is that this is the only time of announcement that really doesn't require a proper event to announce.

Don't worry :) Crap instead of music was then, and now it's the same thing

A comic from Laurel about the announcement :
I did the translation, I hope this is not too bad...

To everyone saying "people already have the music if they want it" -- So you're basically stating that no music created before the iTunes music store was launched is sold on there? When you generalize it like that, I hope it becomes obvious what an absolutely nonsensical statement it is. Why should the Beatles catalog be any different?

They're the biggest band of all time. Regardless of what your feelings are for them, that's a fact, not an opinion.

This is going to be HUGE.

Look at the recent sales of the "1" album, the re-releases, The Beatles: Rock Band, the Cirque du Soleil "Love" show, etc.

They're going to make an ABSOLUTE killing on this.

Having said that, I don't think it warrants a front-page takeover. Probably, as others have mentioned, a requirement in the deal.

And for those children asking "who's listening to the Beatles these days" -- every band you listen to. Regardless of genre, I'd bet my year's salary that over 50% of the artists any of you listen to would cite the Beatles as an influence. There's never been any other artist/group to approach anywhere near the influence they had.

I love The Beatles but this is a personal victory for them and to make such a statement on their site like they have makes me think that it will be more than just a Beatles announcement.

"Just another day", "Never Forget" ... other hits by boy bands!

If this is the Beatles, it's a long awaited hurdle to get over for Apple, but it'll mean very little for present fans. As others have said, they'll all have the tracks already.
